Re: 2030 Strategic Plan Vision
Latin America “University with the borders"

UTEP should work more with Latin America. Being a border town, majority of students at UTEP are
Latinos. The international aspect of higher education refers to globalization’s challenges. Today’s
economies and societies interdependence profoundly affects higher education and higher education in turn
shapes globalization – through teaching, research, and other services.

Mexico’s internationalization has been developed for longer and has evolved since the 1990’s; however
it has been noted that most university-led activities were reactive and there was little input into the policies
and strategies of in situations (Gacel-A ‘vila, 2005). Substantial numbers of universities indicated that
agreements were in effect for student and faculty interactions and research collaborations with institutions
and research collaborations with institutions abroad, although it was noted that over of these agreements
were inactive.

The solution to this problem is to have and encourage students from UTEP research more in Latin
America. Doing research in Latin America will give students a more in depth of culture, people, and
history. Crisis at the border is cases seem to be neglected often.

Strategy

1. Persuade students to research in Latin America and graduate with honors.

2. Promote incentives to participate in international programs such as Study Abroad or volunteering.

3. Enforce research projects for undergraduate and graduate students.

Recommendations

1. Offer international programs for Latin America Universities.

2. Consolidate relationships with Latin American Universities to offer internships, scholarships,

research projects.

3. Create core curricular classes to promote English as a second language to Latin Americans.

Reflection-Recommendation to President
The first assignment in Professor Vierra’s class was to compose a memo to the President of UTEP. The
memo to President Wilson was written suggesting a strategic plan for UTEP in ten years. Research,
recommendations, and strategies had to be implicated in the memo. It helped me learn what would be
the best for the future of UTEP. This assignment taught me how to properly write a business memo,
teaching me the importance of knowing my audience in documents. In this memo, I would not change
nothing because it would have not taught me what I know now. Writing business memos is important in
the business world. Professor taught me how to organize business memos, so the audience understands
the message clearly and concisely. Learning how to write a memo has boosted my confidence writing in
the business world. It will take time to be great at it but before entering this class I did not know how to
properly write a memo.
