TROIA
Troia, which is one of the most important ancient settlements of the world, and its history dating
back to 3000 BC, is at the head of Turkey's most important cultural and touristic list.
The remains of Troia city in Çanakkale's Hisarlik town indicate that there was a settlement from
the Early Bronze Age to the Byzantine period (from 3000 BC – to 1200 AD). The area, where nine
cities were built on top of each other, is the starting point for European prehistory.
The epics of Iliad and Odyssey, which are embodied in Troia, are works of art within the basic
curriculum of many countries of seven continent. For this reason, Troia's presence has a worldwide
reputation. From the past to the present day, films, books, stage shows and visual artworks are
produced on the subject of Troia, and thus Troia’s unyielding power and influence for the world’s
collective imagination increasingly continue.

2. The most referenced area of cultural heritage that combines
world cultures
Hittite: Vilusa/Truvisa
Greek: Τροία-Troia/Ίλιον-İlion
Latin: Troia/Ilium
You can see the influence of Troia from Greek Mythology to the roots of European Culture,
from Caucasus to Persian Culture, in several Anatolian Civilisations, in the roots of Rome and
Paris and many more.
Several world famous leaders such as Xerxes, Alexandre the Great, Julius Caesar, Fatih the
Conqueror, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and many more have been inspired and motivated from
Iliad and Troia.
The Dardanelles, the Troas region and the Ida Mountains are cradle of civilizations which can
be taken as a reference for the origins of European cultures and Greek mythology, for a wide
geography from Caucasus to Persian cultures, and for diverse cultures.
Troia, which sheds light on history of about 5000 years, is regarded as the beginning of
Anatolian civilizations and the area where the first sprouts of the Mediterranean world
flourished.
Many emperors and rulers visited Troia, which had become immortal with the Legend of
Iliad. Like the Persian Emperor Xerxes who came to Troia with military expedition to the
West; Alexander the Great, who had an expedition to eastward, visited these sacred lands and
sacrificed for the heroes of the Battle of Troia.
It is told that Aenes, a Trojan hero, who had escaped from razed Troia and settled in Italy and
was the progenitor of the Romans.
In 188 BC, Rome had proclaimed Troia as the capital city and was exempted from taxation. The
descendants of Julius Caesar had their origins to Ilus, the legendary founder of Troia. Therefore,
the Romans who rebuilt Troia were owning their past.
Just as the city of Rome, Paris had its origins to Troia, and until the 16th century it was looking
for Troia in both Frank and Gaulistic origins. For centuries, the origins of European peoples and
cultures have been sought in Troia.

3. The center of dialogue and challenge between east and west
According to archaeologist M. Osman Korfmann, who is identified with the name of Troia, Troia
and its surroundings, consisting of passages and ports bordering the two cultural worlds, has
"an indispensable function as a communication and trade center in the region between Asia and
Europe" in 2nd and 3rd thousands BC. This proves that, through Troia culture, geographical and
cultural boundaries can be easily overcome in a wide area such as Aegean and South-Eastern
Europe, Caucasus and Carpathians, Eurasia and Near East.
According to Korfmann, in 2000’s BC, as a city to be on the border of a "high culture" center
created by the Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilizations, Troia again had a function of
"a bridge and intermediary in spreading this center around". Therefore, contrary to the Western-
oriented sense of civilization which has been formed since the 19th century, it is an evidence that
the West had borrowed the values which were basilar of its own culture and civilization from the
East.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of Turkish Republic, was also inspired and motivated
from Troia

5. The Richness of Troia’s Environment
• Vilusa, one of the two important cities of the Hittite.
• The Battle of Granicus (Biga Creek), which Alexander the Great crossed the Strait of Dardanelles
and fight against Persians.
• Crossing the Dardanelles Strait of Persian King Xerxes 1st, by building a bridge from the ships:
Persian King Xerxes 1st was preparing to continue the war since years that his father Darius had
initiated against the Greeks. He went to an expedition with his great army against Athens. In 484
BC the army commanded by Xerxes arrived to Anatolia and in Çanakkale they build a bridge from
ships to cross his soldiers from Dardanelles to Abydos, which was located on the opposite bank of
the strait.
• City of Ilium, Rome had declared as the capital city in 2nd century BC, and the city of the
ancestors of Caesar.
• Alexandra Troas and St Paul: In the Hellenistic period, in 306 BC, Antigonos Monophtalmos, one
of the commanders of Alexander the Great, rebuilt the city to a much larger extent by placing the
people of five settlements, including Neandreia, in Sigeria. In 301 BC, name of the city changed by
Lysimakhos to Alexandria Troas in memory of Alexander the Great. The city, which was the main
port of Northwest Anatolia, developed in great proportions during the Roman period and as early
as 188 BC, it became a 'free and autonomous city'; the present-day remains prove the historical
importance of the region. It is thought that the city reached a population close to 100.000 in its
golden age.
• Ida Mountain - Troia Legend: Homer's Legend of Iliad refers to mountain as "Ida of thousand
springs". In his epic Homer frequently mentions Mount Ida as '' the mother of wild animals with its
abundant springs''. According to the legend, Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena attended to the famous
beauty contest that led to the Battle of Troia was held here, Zeus was born here, the gods watched
the Battle of Troia from here, and Aphrodite first fell in love here.
• Apollon Simitheon: The sacred site of Apollon Smintheus (Smintheion), one of the important
sacred sites of the Late Hellenistic period in Anatolia; a prehistoric settlement dating back to
around 5000 was found. The Temple of Gulpınar - Apollon Smintheus attracts attention with its
architectural design and style and with the reliefs from Homer's Iliad Epic about the Hellenistic
period. The temple, built in the style of Ion in 150 years B.C. is the only example in Northwest
Anatolia, in Troas region today.

• Assos Ancient City - Athena Temple - Aristotle's School of Philosophy: It was founded on the
slopes of a volcanic hill at the southern end of the region called Troas in Antiquity, opposite the
Lesbos Island. Throughout the history this region was under the domination of Lydia, Persia,
Pergamon, Rome and it was abandoned in Middle Ages; it was discovered by Francis H. Bacon
during the excavations of the American Archaeological Institute in 1880-1883. When it was
active, Assos was rich because it had the only major harbour in the region. Aristo, one of the great
thinkers of antiquity, lived in this city for three years and established a school of philosophy.
Assos was also visited by St.Paul, and for this reason regarded as sacred by Christians.
• Gargaran (Küçükkuyu) – Altar of Zeus: Lean its back against the Gargaran Hill, which is
decorated with olive trees and rising suddenly from the sea. Gargaran Hill hosts Altar of Zeus
which was built to offer sacrifices according to ancient Greek culture. In ancient Greece, it was
customary to sacrifice gods, for victory over wars, for drought, to get rid of disease, to get fertile
crops, and protecting from catastrophes.
• Neandria: It is an ancient city located on the Çığrı Mountain in the north-east of Kayacık Village
which is 20 km far from Ezine district, in Çanakkale. The first studies on Neandreia's ancient city
were made by Frank Calvert in 1865 and Thacher Clarke in 1886. The first excavations began by the
German architect Robert Koldewey in 1889.

The work of Schliemann, who flesh out the Troia Epic and made the story come true, had
resulted in the Trojan treasures being torn off from the Anatolian territory. In order to create
the legal ground for the studies to return Troia artifacts to their homeland, which are in 52
museum around the world, will be accelerated by the 2018-The Year of Troia.
