Monografija Špišić Bukovica – Summary

Municipality of Špišić Bukovica is one of the smalest municipalities of Virovitica -


Podravina county and it is located in the western part of the county. People have been living
in this area for more than 6000 years. This area of said municipality has a very rich history,
especially from antiques and medieval times. Špišić Bukovica municipality was founded in
1993. and as for today, it includes seven settlements (Bušetina, Lozan, Novi Antunovac,
Okrugljača, Rogovac, Špišić Bukovica and Vukosavljevica). The municipality occupies
around 10,700 hectares and as seen in the last records from 2011, 4221 inhabitants lives here.
Their main ocupation is working on land, farming and cattle breeding.

During Middle Ages there was a famous fortress and estate called Bakva – firstly
mentioned in 1267., and from 1301., up until the middle of the 16th century there has been a
famous Pavlin monastery of St. Benedict.There is also a Catholic parish of John the Baptist in
the Špišić Bukovica municipality, founded in 1808.

Among many of preserved sacral and profane artifacts from the past the most significant is
the castle / courtyard of the Špišić family dating back to the middle of the 18th century
(presumably around 1770's), and the parish church of St. John the Baptist which was built in
1753.

Presently, there are quite a number of archaeological findings from various periods of
time, just like numerous of written documents from the 13th to the16th century. Also,
historical artifacts have been found and preserved from later times in history, to be more
exact, from 17th and 18th century. The history of this region is well known in the 19th and
20th century, and to this day, the Špišić Bukovica municipality has around 20 different
societies and clubs.

The area of Špišić Bukovica municipality is well visited tourist destination due to its
favorable position, various natural and cultural sights and vineyards of Bilogora.

The beauty of the landscape of the Bilogora hills and the river Drava, fertile soil,
richness of forests, good organization of the economy, kindness of its habitants, the
extraordinary rich cultural and social life of its residents make this area prerequisited for a
quality life style, along with the development of the economy and all the other activities in
this part of Virovitica Podravina County in Republic of Croatia.
