Pregnancy Weight Gain

Goal: Understanding weight gain during pregnancy.


1. Identify Body Mass Index (BMI)
2. BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)^2
a. If BMI:
i. Less than 18.5
➢ Recommended weight gain = ~ 28 - 40 lbs. total
ii. 18.5 to 24.9
➢ Recommended weight gain = ~ 25-35 lbs. total
iii. 25 to 29
➢ Recommended weight gain = ~ 15-25 lbs. total
iv. 30 and over
➢ Recommended weight gain = ~ 11-20 lbs. total

Weight Gain by trimester


Numbers to expect during pregnancy
1st trimester (First 3 months):
➢ 1- 4.5 lbs.
2nd trimester (4-6 months):
➢ Approximately 1-2 lbs. per week
