 For some people Easter is the most important holiday of the year
 In the years before 1989 Easter-Velikonoce was limited to the welcoming of spring
 Many traditions are still observed and practised, especially in villages, and different
regions have their own traditions and customs.
 Easter Sunday is a day of preparation for Easter Monday
 Girls paint colour and decorate eggs and boys prepare their Easter whips
 The whip- pomlazka- is used by boys who go carolling on Easter Monday and whip
girls on the legs
 Men and boys expect money or a shot of alcohol
 Kraslice- are painted by girls and women
 There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain
level of skill
 You can use bee’s wax, straw(hay), watercolours, picture stickers
 A nationwide Easter egg competition is held in Prague around Easter time

Czech etiquette

 Shake hands to welcome your counterpart. A firm handshake is viewed as a sign


of honesty and openness. It is not unusual for family members and very close
friends to kiss on the cheek.
 Usually it is the woman or the older, or the more distinguished man, who offers a
handshake first.
 Maintain eye contact. This is perceived as a sign of honesty and trustworthiness.
 Always arrive on time, even for dinner- punctuality is viewed as a sign of
reliability and responsibility.
 Lunch is the main meal during the day. Supper is usually much smaller and
lighter.
 Calling somebody their first name has a special meaning. It is a sign of friendship.
It should first be offered by the woman or the older or the more respected man.
 When visiting somebody’s home, bring a small gift. Flowers or chocolates for the
lady of the house are also very appropriate.
 It is commonly expected for guests to remove their shoes upon entering the
host’s home.

 Czech are not great gesticulators


 Common gestures:
 Shrugging shoulders= I don’t know or I don’t care
 Pointing with your finger at your forehead or temple= you are stupid
 Holding thumbs in a closed fist= luck wishing
 Thumbs up= good; thumbs down= bad
 Smiles= they don’t smile to foreigners
