INTERNAL – 1 – TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. Explain with a neat sketch the seismic refraction method of soil exploration.
2. What are the methods available for dewatering? Explain any one.
3. Explain the wash boring method with neat sketch.
4. List and explain the different types of samplers used in soil sampling.
5. Write a note on pressure distribution diagrams.
6. What are the assumptions and limitations in Boussinesq’s theory and Westergaard’s
theory for determining the stresses in the soil under concentrated loads?
7. What is stabilization of borehole? List the various methods available and explain any one
method.
8. Define contact pressure. Explain contact pressure distribution in different soils.
9. Determine the velocity of waves in soil layers and thickness of the top stratum for the
following details,
Time (s) 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.45 0.5 0.55
Distance (m) 40 80 120 160 200 240 280
Geophones are place at a spacing of 40m in a straight line and the time taken for the last
wave to be received at each geo-phone is given.
10. Using Hvorslev’s method estimate the ground water table level for the following data
a. Depth up to which the water is bailed out = 15m
b. Water rise on first day = 0.80m
c. Water rise on second day = 0.70m
d. Water rise on third day = 0.60m
11. A circular area on the ground surface 6m in diameter carries a uniformly distributed load
of 150kN/m2. Calculate the vertical stress at depths of 3m, 6m, 9m and 12m. Also plot
the variation of stress with depth.
12. Point loads 64kN, 15kN and 21kN are 1.5m apart in a straight line at the surface of soil
mass. Calculate the resultant stress produced by these loads on a horizontal plane one
meter below the surface at points vertically below the loads and also half way (mid point)
between them. The vertical pressure due to load Q is given by Boussinesq’s equation.
The value of Boussinesq’s influence factor are as follows,
r/z 0 0.75 1.5 2.25 3.0
IB 0.4775 0.1565 0.0251 0.053 0.0015
Sketch the curve showing distribution of these resultant stresses at that level.
