Binomial Theorem 1 2 1 1
DEFINITION
The Binomial Theorem is the method of expanding an expression
which has been raised to any finite power. A binomial Theorem is a
powerful tool of expansion, which has application in Algebra,
probability, etc.
Basic Properties of Binomial Coefficients:
● nCr = nCn-r

● nCr +nCr+1 = n+1Cr+1

● nCr = nCy ⇒ x=y or x+y=n

Standard expansion
The Binomial Theorem
(x+y)n = nC0 xn-0 y0 + nC1xn-1y1 + nC2xn-2y2 + … + nCr xn-r yr +...+ nCnx0yn n
Cr xn-ryr
SOME IMPORTANT EXPANSION

(x+y)n= nC0 xn-0 y0 + nC1xn-1y1 + nC2xn-2y2 +...+ nCr xn-r yr +...+ nCnx0yn n
Cr
xn-ryr

(x-y)n = [x+(-y)]n = nC0 xn-0 (-y)0 + nC1xn-1(-y)2 + nC2xn-2(-y)2 +...+ nCr xn-r(-y)r +...+ nCnx0(-y)n n
Cr
xn-r(-y)r

(x+y)n + (x-y)n =2( nC0 xny0 + nC2xn-2y2 + nC4 xn-4 y4 +.....)

(x+y)n - (x-y)n = 2( nC1 xn-1y1 + nC3xn-3y3 + nC5 xn-5 y5 +.....)

(1+x)n = nC0 x0 + nC1x1 + nC2x2 +...+ nCr xr +...+ nCn xn n
Cr xr

(1- x)n = nC0 x0 - nC1x1 + nC2x2 - ...+ nCr (-x)r ...+ nCn (-x)n (-1)r nCr xr

(1+x)n +(1- x)n =2.[ nC0 x0 + nC2x2 + nC4 x4+...]

(1+x)n - (1- x)n =2.[ nC1 x1 + nC3x3 + nC5x5+...]

Terms in Binomial Expansion
1) General term
2) Middle term
3) Independent term
General Term
(x+y)n = nC0 xn-0 y0 + nC1xn-1y1 + nC2xn-2y2 +... + nCr xn-r yr +...+ nCn x0yn n
Cr
xn-ryr
General term = Tr+1 = nCr xn-r. yr
● General Term in (1+x)n is nCr xr
● In the binomial expansion of (x+y)n , the rth term from the end is (n-r+2)th term
from the beginning.
Middle Term
1. When n is even,

2. When n is odd,
Properties of Binomial Coefficients:

● n
C0 + nC1+ nC2 + ...+ nCn =2n

● n
C0 - nC1 + nC2- nC3+.... + (-1)n nCn=0

● n
C0 + nC2 + nC4.+....= nC1 + nC3+ nC5 +....= 2n-1
Multinomial Theorem:

for all n ⋲ N,

where r1, r2,....., rk are all non-negative integers.

NOTE:
(a) The general term in the above expansion is

(b) The total number of terms in the above expansion is

(c) Sum of all the coefficients is obtained by putting all the x’s equal to 1 and is kn
