EXERCISE 9. Meanings of COULD.
Directions:What is the meaning of could in the following?
Does could express past , present, or future time?

1. I could be home late tonight. Do not wait for me for dinner.


Could be= may / might be. It expresses (future time.)

2. Thrity years ago, when he was a small child, David could


speak Arabic fluently. Now he is forgotten a lot.
Could speak= was able to speack. It expresses (past time).

3. A: Where is Alicia?
B: I do not know. She could be at the mall.
Could be= may/ might be ( present time)

4. When I was a child, we could swin in the Duckfoot River, but


noe it is too polluted.
Today even the fish sick.
Could swin= were able to swin(past time)

5. A: What is this?
B: I do not know. It looks like a glass bottle, but it could be a
flower base.
Could be= may / might be (present time)

6. Leti s leave for the aiport now. Yuki`s plane could arrive early,
and we want to be threre when she arrives.
Could arrive= may/ might arrive( future time)

7. When I was a kid, I could jump rope rally well.


Could jump= was able to jump(past time)

Directions: Listen to the clues with books closed. Make
guesses using could, may, and might.
Example: is made of metal and you keep it in a pocket.
TEACHER: I am thinking of something that is made of
metal. I keep it in my pocket. What could it be?
STUDENTS: It could be a pen. It could be some keys. It
might be a paper clip. It may be a small pocket

be?

MARCO: It could be soccer.

THALIA: It was right! I was thinking of a soccer.

7. THALIA: Has(three) stories and is made of (brick). What could

it be?

MARCO: It could be a house.

THALIA: It was right! I was thinking of a house.


8. THALIA:Has four legs and is found on a farm. What could it

be?

MARCO: It could be a house.

THALIA: It was right! I was thinking of a house.

9. THALIA: Is green and we can see it out that window. What

could it be?

MARCO: it could be a tree.

THALIA: It was right! I was thinking of a tree.

10. THALIA: Is sweet and you can eat it. What could it be?

MARCO: It could be a candy.

THALIA: It was right! I was thinking of a candy.
