Case - II: Hotel - J W Marriott, Juhu
The Hotel Association of India (HAI) is concerned about the shortage of housekeeping staff the
hospitality industry is projecting for the future. To learn the current degree of job satisfaction among
the housekeeping staff, J W Marriott Hotel has sponcered a study of housekeeping staff on behalf
of the association. Their young Director, Minal Thackar has considered 50 housekeeping staff across
different hotels in Mumbai as a sample to learn their degree of satisfaction with their work, their pay,
and their opportunities for promotion. Each of the three aspects of satisfaction was measured on a
scale from 0 to 100, with larger values indicating higher degrees of satisfaction. The data collected
also showed the type of hotel employing the housekeeping staff. The types of hospitals were 3 Star,
4 Star and 5 Star. The data is shown in the table below.
Use methods of descriptive statistics to summerize the data. Present the summaries that will be
beneficial in communicating the results to others. Discuss your findings. Specifically,
comment on the following questions:
(i) On the basis of the entire dataset and the 3 job satisfaction variables, what aspect of the job is
most satisfying for the staff? What appears to be the least satisfying? In what area(s), if any, do
you feel improvements should be made? Discuss.
(ii) On the basis of descriptive measures of variability, what measure of job satisfaction appears to
generate the greatest difference of opinion among the housekeeping staff? Explain.
(iii) What can be learned about the types of hotels? Does any particular type of hotel seem to
have better levels of job satisfaction that the other types? Do your results sugest any recommendation
for learning about and improving job satisfaction? Discuss.
(iv) What additional descriptive statistics and insights can you use to learn about and possibly
improve job satisfaction?

Observations:
In case - I, when Br I is compared to Br II, the first has a much higher variance compared to Br II.
There are 2 reasons for this:
(i) The variance that we compute here are not actual numbers but frequencies.
Hence, the values of variance or even mean, could lead to erroreous conclusions.
(ii) As the difference between the higher and the lower values is wider in the first Br
as compared to the second, variance is higher for the first Br. Moreover,
the total sum of the values is more in BrI, compared to BrII.
In case - II,
Here, we calculated the weighted variance
