This document is an application for Techfest-2017 submitted by Alampalli Ramgopal Hitesh and Mooga Venkatesh. It provides details about their Li-Fi Music Player project including an abstract describing how it works. The project consists of a Li-Fi dongle that translates audio signals from a mobile phone or other device into light signals using an LED. It transmits these signals to a special speaker mounted with a solar panel that receives the light signals and converts them back into audio playback without the need for wires. The abstract explains the components and operation of transmitting audio signals via light between the dongle and speaker.

Li-fi is a short name given to new technology light fidelity. Fidelity means the accuracy of reporting. Light fidelity means using light for transmission of signal from sound player to the speaker instead of using wires. Here we report the sound signal to the speaker using light produced by a LED. It is a new paradigm in wireless communication. It is an advancement over Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth uses a type of radio technology whereas li-fi uses light. The range of li-fi is much more compared to the Bluetooth. One can receive the li-fi data as long as one is in the range of light being emitted by a LED. Hence the range depends on the strength of the light emitted by the LED transmitter. The proposed project consists of a Li-Fi dongle and speaker. The li-fi dongle is a translator and transmitter. In simple language, it is a device which translates the sounds played by any player such as a mobile phone into light signals of different frequency/intensity using a LED. It transmits the light signal through the LED to the speaker. The speaker is a special speaker mounted with solar panel which acts as receiver of the light signal. After receiving the light signal, the solar panel converts it into electrical signals and feeds a speaker for reproduction of the original sound. The speaker is battery powered. The li-fi dongle can be connected to the mobile phone through an audio output jack available or to any other devices used for sound playing. The major components of the device are an audio signal input system, an amplifier inbuilt in the dongle, LED, solar panel mounted on the receiver, an amplifier in built in the receiver and a speaker. The audio input system inputs the audio signal played the player to the dongle. The input signal is amplified using three Common Emitter amplifiers. The amplified signals are input to the LED which produces light signals. The light emitted by the LED is transmitted and is received by the solar panel mounted on the speaker. The solar panel receives the light signal and converts it into electrical signal. The electrical signal is amplified and is fed to the speaker through an audio socket. The speaker can also be solar powered through a separate solar panel for remote operations. The advantages of the li-fi dongle are range of reception and cost. It is much cheaper compared to a Bluetooth dongle and speaker. The other advantage is the range of signal transmission. The range is limited by the range of reception of light emitted by the LED. Larger ranges are possible with higher light intensities.
