Maximum Power Transfer Theorem

Aim:
a. To find the value of load resistor for maximum power using
Maximum Power Transfer Theorem
b. To implement the given circuit on breadboard and plot Power versus
load current and verify the value of load resistor for Pmax.
c. To calculate the maximum power delivered to load resistor using
calculated and measured value of RL and verify it with the above
results.

Apparatus:
DC Regulated power supply (0-30V, 2A), Ammeter (0-25mA), Voltmeter
(25-0-25V), 1.5KΩ resistor, Variable Resistance Box/Rheostat,
Breadboard, connecting wires.

Circuit diagram:
Fig a. Maximum Power Transfer Theorem

Theory:

A resistive load will abstract maximum power from a network when the load
resistance is equal to the resistance of the network as viewed from output
terminals, with all en-ergy sources removed leaving behind internal resistance.
For maximum power transfer : RL = RTH
The maximum power transferred to the load from the source is :
Pmax = (VTH)2/4RTH
Although applicable to all branches of electrical engineering this theorem is
particularly useful, the overall efficiency of a network supplying maximum
power to any branch is 50%.For this reason, the application of this theorem to
power transmission and distribution network is limited, because in their case
the goal is high efficiency and not maximum power transferred.

Procedure:
1. Connect the circuit as shown above.
2. Adjust Vs=10V.
3. Vary rheostat (pot) from minimum to maximum and measure
corresponding current and voltage.
4. Calculate power PL=VLIL and also RL=VL/IL.
5. Plot the graph of PL Vs RL.
Observation:
IL(mA) VL(V) RL=VL/IL PL=VLIL
Graph:
