SYLLABUS FOR BASIC GERMAN (B.TECH) (UNIVERSITY CORE)

Objectives: The course aims at basic written and oral skills (comprehension
and expression) in German language which will enable the
students to have job opportunities and higher education in India
and abroad. As a whole, it will bring an idea about the German
culture and society
Expected Outcome: Listening: Students will be able to understand routine questions,
statements and commands of everyday conversations. Speaking:
Students will be able to reply, in simple terms, to routine
questions, statements and commands of everyday conversations;
Reading: Students will be able to understand texts using familiar
vocabulary and structures. Writing: Students will be able to
produce simple messages using basic structures and familiar
vocabulary. Culture and Language: Students will become aware
of the differences and similarities of the selected cultural,
linguistic and historical aspects.
Unit No. 1 Context based conversations 6hrs
Context based conversations: Home, Transport, University, Hospital, meeting a friend,
meeting a doctor, telephone conversation etc.
Unit No. 2 Baisc Grammar 6hrs
Basic Grammar : Personal Pronouns, Possessive Pronouns, Nouns, Gender, Vocabulary,
German alphabet, Numbers, Days of the week
Unit No. 3 Basic Grammar 6hrs
Basic Grammar: Forms & basic use of the Nominative, Accusative and Dative cases of nouns
and pronouns. Months and seasons, Gender of nouns, Colors, Foods, Noun compounds, the
family, Telling time
Unit No. 4 Cultural Themes 6hrs
Cultural themes: Postal system & telephoning, Regional greetings and farewells, German and
European geography, Currencies in German‐speaking countries, Public transportation,
Birthday customs and greetings, Food habits, day to day devices
Unit No. 5 History and geography 6hrs
Historical facts : Unification, political parties, provinces in Germany etc.
