PREFACE

T
E N E B R Æ , meaning ‘darkness’ or ‘shadows,’ is the name given to the combined Offices of
Matins and Lauds during the Sacred Triduum: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy
Saturday. On these dark and most solemn days of the suffering, death, and burial of our
Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Mother Church takes these two Offices of the night vigils and
morning praises, which on every other day of the year are full of anticipation and joy at the
return of light at dawn, and changes them into painful lamentations for her crucified
Bridegroom. The words that Holy Church puts on our lips at these Tenebræ services comprise some of the
finest and most perfect meditations on the Passion of our Lord, since they are chiefly from Holy Scripture:
the books of the Law, the writings of the Prophets, and especially the Psalms of David. Thus do they lead
us with care through the Old Testament prefigurements of Christ’s Passion and Cross, bringing us to an
ever deeper understanding and love of the God-Man Who fulfilled the will of His Father by giving Himself
up for our salvation.

Tenebræ are marked by special observances that heighten their spirit of sorrow. In the sanctuary, six
candles of unbleached beeswax are lighted upon the altar, as at solemn services for the dead. A large
triangular candlestick, called the hearse, bears fifteen lighted candles, likewise of unbleached beeswax, on
the epistle side of the sanctuary. In the Office, Holy Church lays aside her usual chants of joy and praise
with which she adorns her prayers on all other days: there is no Domine, labia mea (O Lord, open my lips)
nor Deus, in adjutorium (O God, come to my assistance) to begin the Hours, and the Gloria Patri (Glory be to
the Father) is everywhere omitted, as are the customary blessings and thanksgivings for each of the lessons
at Matins. Tenebræ end with a special commemoration of the Passion and Death of our Redeemer, Christus
factus est pro nobis obediens usque ad mortem (Christ was made obedient for us unto death), which grows
more solemn on each of the successive days.

The name ‘Tenebræ’ itself signifies the spiritual darkness at the setting of the Sun of Justice, which is
Christ, suffering, dying on the Cross, and buried in the tomb, but also refers to physical darkness in the
church during the services: at the end of each psalm or canticle at Tenebræ, one of the candles on the
triangular hearse is extinguished, so that the church grows dimmer and darker as the service proceeds.
However, the candle at the top of the hearse is left lighted, for it represents Christ. During the chanting of
the Benedictus at Lauds, the six candles on the altar are put out, together with all the other lights in the
church, symbolising the abandonment and desertion of Christ by His Apostles and disciples. Then the
candle from the top of the triangle is taken and hidden behind the altar, while all kneel and chant the
solemn commemoration of the Passion of Christ in darkness.

Formerly, Tenebræ were celebrated after nightfall, being anticipated the night before. This would
have made the darkness in the church complete by the end of the service, recalling the darkness at our
Lord’s Crucifixion. At this point in the service, a loud noise, called the strepitus, is made by banging on the
wooden seats of the stalls. The confusion and chaos of the noise and darkness in the church express the
convulsions of nature which occurred when our Lord breathed His last: the earth trembled, the sun hid its
face, rocks were split asunder, and the bodies of the dead came forth from their tombs. The strepitus
continues until the candle reappears from behind the altar, still burning brightly. Christ, though He
suffered, died and was buried, is still the Light of the world, never to be extinguished. Tenebræ conclude in
silence: all rise and pay homage to the Conqueror of Death, Who has overcome the darkness.

Antiphon at the Benedictus

During the Canticle Benedictus, the six candles on the altar are extinguished gradually, one by one, so that the last

All of the candles on the triangular candelabra have now been extinguished, save one, which remains lit at the
highest point of the candelabra.

Antiphon at the Benedictus

During the Canticle Benedictus, the six candles on the altar are extinguished gradually, one by one, so that the last

Then the strepitus, a loud sound made by knocking on the choir benches, is made. This symbolises the convulsions
of nature which occurred when our Lord died on the Cross: the earth trembled, the sun was darkenened, rocks were
split asunder, and the bodies of the dead came forth from their tombs.
When the lighted candle reappears, all rise in silence.
