Chapter 15: Organizational Culture

Summary and Application

Organizational culture is a system of shared values, norms, and assumptions that guides members’
attitudes and behaviors and influences how they perceive and react to their environment.

Creating and maintaining a desired culture can be facilitated by technology, but at the same time can be
made more difficult by the consequences of using technology to work remotely.

Innovation is the process of creating and doing new things that are introduced into the marketplace as
products, processes, or services.

The three elements of managing organization culture are (1) taking advantage of the existing culture, (2)
teaching the organization culture, and (3) changing the organization culture.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Describe three different types of organizational cultures. When would each be most and least
effective for a research and development company dependent on employee innovation?

There are three different types of organizational cultures. The first one is taking advantage of the
existing culture where I can see as the efficient way in finding how a specific area will be innovated.
Second is teaching the organization culture that is effective in developing a company’s work and
vision. Lastly is changing the organization culture which obviously takes effect when the first and
second element of managing organization culture will take effect.

2. Do you think that culture is important to organizational performance? Why or why not?

Yes, it gives the employee an idea on how he/she will cope up with the demand of the company and
how he/she will address the concerns with regards to his/her working experience.

3. How do you learn about prospective employers’ cultures? How important is a company’s
culture to you when you decide to apply or to accept a job offer?

I will research about the company before applying because it is important for me to know if the
company’ vision and mission is in line with my beliefs. More importantly, I have to make sure that
the company takes good care of the well-being of their employees.
