Proverbs will train God’s people to live wisely
(skilfully) (vv. 2a, 3–5)
What is wisdom?

goal of wisdom is that you might achieve a life of
beauty and significance so that at the end of your days
you will have accomplished something worthwhile
and lasting. Jesus is the one who exemplifies wisdom,
as he lived on earth with perfect skill. It is through
Christ that we are made wise and gain the ability to
live wisely.

wayward children who need to be brought under the
rule of our heavenly Father (even if it is painful) for
our own good. We need to learn to restrain our natu-
ral desires and to perform our duty. !ose who are
trained by discipline are successful.
Some time ago my family a"ended an organ con-
cert at a local park. We were amazed at the virtuosity
of the performer. What seemed effortless during the
performance was the product of thousands of hours of
hard work. !e same can be said of others who have
become skilful in sports, cra$s, and trades.
O$en we hear of people who had great talent, for
example in sports or music, but fell far short of their
potential because they did not have the discipline to
fully develop their God-given abilities. Our author
tells us from the beginning that if you want to be wise
and successful in life you will have to work hard.
!e nature of the training offered by God is not
merely academic but is also highly practical. It is like
the physician who perfects his cra$, not merely
through classroom learning, but also by practising

medicine as a hospital intern. We apply the wisdom of
Proverbs in the laboratory of life.

God’s standard. !e Hebrew word is used in Deuteron-
omy 25:13–15 in reference to the importance of not
having two sets of weights in your bag that would
enable you to cheat your neighbour by short-changing
him or her when you sell and take too much when you
buy. ‘Justice and equity’ are exercised by one who
makes fair decisions. Such impartiality would have
been essential for the future ruler to whom Proverbs
was originally wri"en.

seductions of the world offered by Madame Folly and
those connected with her. Wisdom will help the stu-
dent to know the true facts of life so that he or she can
recognize the dangers of the world and avoid falling
into disastrous sin. Wisdom will enable you to discern
between good and bad companions. You will be able to
identify false values and beliefs.
"e teacher also offers ‘to the youth knowledge and
discretion’ (v. 4b). Young, inexperienced people are
o#en aimless. "ey live only for the moment and do
not plan for the future. It is sad to see people in their
twenties and thirties who are dri#ing through life and
achieving nothing. "e wise young person will have
‘discretion’—the ability to form plans so that impor-
tant goals can be achieved.
Are you young? Do you realize you are naive? Do
you sense you are dri#ing through life? "ere is hope
for you. Pay heed to the wisdom God offers and you
won’t have to remain that way.

!e book of Proverbs isn’t merely for the young and
immature. !ose who are truly wise remain teachable
and ‘increase in learning’ through continued disci-
plined study. God’s wisdom is unfathomable. You can
read through Proverbs hundreds of times with profit.
As you go through the stages of life, you will gain new
insights that go along with your experiences and help
you live well.
You will also ‘acquire wise counsel’. !e Hebrew
word translated ‘wise counsel’ was used of the ropes
that would guide a ship. Most unbelievers are guided
by worldly wisdom or personal feelings. Some seek
mystical guidance through astrology and other forms
of divination which are forbidden by Scripture (Deut.
18:9–14). No wonder their lives are in shambles!
Proverbs warns against the counsel of fools and
against following your own feelings (‘!ere is a way
which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of
death’, 14:12). !e guidance offered by Proverbs is not
mystical but rather moral, firmly grounded in truth
and righteousness. One does not gain wisdom merely

by being ‘zapped’ from above; rather, the godly person
acquires wisdom for living through the disciplined
study of God’s Word, thereby establishing a pa!ern of
wise choices in life.

Hebrews 5:14 speaks of the mature ‘who because of
practice have their senses trained to discern good and
evil’. Discernment will help you decide which teachers
to embrace and which ones you should steer clear of
because of their unbiblical doctrine. Discernment will
help you to distinguish between what is true and false,
what is right and wrong in culture (e.g. movies, televi-
sion, education, etc.). You won’t have to live with the
perpetual uncertainty of postmodern worldly philoso-
phy but instead will have confidence that you know
the truth.
For example, a Christian family that had been study-
ing Proverbs together in their evening devotions once
found themselves driving through an impoverished
area of their city where they saw many street people.
One of the children commented with discernment,
‘Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the
hand of the diligent makes rich’ (10:4).

You could hand me a Korean Bible and I could pass my
eyes over its characters, but it would do me no good.
You might offer a nine-year-old an advanced physics
textbook, but he or she is not likely to grasp its con-
tent. For the natural man, the Bible itself is foolishness
(1 Cor. 2:14). With the help of the Holy Spirit, your
disciplined study of Proverbs will help you develop
important skill in understanding the wisdom con-
tained in God’s Word.

rest of the Old Testament, is wri!en for us.
"e LORD is the source of all true knowledge and
wisdom. Wisdom is an a!ribute of God: ‘With Him are
wisdom and might; to Him belong counsel and under-
standing’ (Job 12:13). His wisdom is displayed in his
works: ‘It is He who made the earth by His power, who
established the world by His wisdom; and by His
understanding He has stretched out the heavens’ (Jer.
10:12; see also Prov. 8:22–31). Wisdom is imparted to
men through God’s Word: ‘"e law of the LORD is per-
fect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the LORD is
sure, making wise the simple’ (Ps. 19:7).
God imparts wisdom to those who seek him: ‘If any
of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to
all generously and without reproach, and it will be
given to him’ (James 1:5). "e early chapters of
Proverbs plead with the naive reader to earnestly pur-
sue wisdom. "e New Testament reveals that the ulti-
mate expression of wisdom is found in Jesus Christ (1
Cor. 1:30–31).
You cannot discern the true nature of life and the

world apart from the LORD who is the root of all knowl-
edge. !e one who tries to be wise apart from God is a
branch cut off from the root. For this reason, only the
godly are truly wise. !e humble workman or the
faithful homemaker may be wiser than the Professor
of Philosophy at Oxford or Harvard.

not autonomous beings, free to assert our own will
and decide what is right for us. We must acknowledge
the LORD’s sovereign moral governance of the uni-
verse. We should be open to his training and correc-
tion and trust that his way is always best. To fear God is
to know God. To know God is to have life (19:23a).
When you fear God, you no longer fear men (29:25).
!e fear of the L ORD is not a beginning like the first
stage of a rocket which is cast aside a"er it has served
its purpose. Rather, the fear of the LORD is the begin-
ning of wisdom in the same way in which a foundation
is the beginning of a house: everything that comes
a"er the foundation is built upon it.

sense, and they lack the sense to know that they lack
sense. Fools are unteachable because they are proud.
‘Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and
turn away from evil’ (3:7). !ey reject God’s wisdom
and they hate discipline. A fool ends up wasting his or
her life, ultimately coming to ruin (1:30–32).
Conclusion
What do you seek? We live in a world full of fools play-
ing games. !ey imagine that their accumulation of
fame, fortune, and pleasure will make them winners.
In spite of our investment of billions in educating our
young people, test scores are down and juvenile crime
is rising. Some students are learning facts but remain
foolish. Spurgeon writes, ‘To know is not to be wise.
Many men know a great deal and are the greater fools
for it. !ere is no fool as great as a knowing fool.’5 Our
young people are being taught materialism and hedo-
