I-Search Project Part IV Expository Essay

Everyone has heard about artificial intelligence. It is a very widely misunderstood subject

and many people have a false understanding of it. Many also fear it, leading to mixed feelings

about the future of computers. Artificial intelligence should not be something that is feared or

that is misunderstood. Down to the point, artificial intelligence is just a computer like any other

computer, but instead of having humans program changes in its purpose into the software, the

computer learns by itself, eliminating the need for human intervention. Many examples of

common artificial intelligence that most do not know about is a search engine, such as Google.

Google uses AI to keep track of what the user is searching up and then recommends it the next

time the user logs on. Another example of artificial intelligence is smart thermostat, mainly Nest.

Nest uses the activities that humans do everyday and at different times to regulate the likable

temperature in the room or building. Another suggested use for artificial intelligence is to govern

and lead the country, replacing humans and paving the way to world peace. Artificial intelligence

could govern the country because of the problems in the present political system with humans

controlling it, the making of world peace, and the cons of artificial intelligence based on societal

thought.

Artificial intelligence could govern the country because of the problems in the current

political system. According to Accenture, a large company in the artificial intelligence industry,

artificial intelligence has many components to keep it in line with the parameters of its allotted

task. In the current political system, the humans are kept in control by the System of Checks and

Balances, which prevents either of the three branches of the government from keeping more

control over the other. However, humans are the problem because of the election process and

basic human feelings, like jealousy and evil. As long as these feelings reside in humans, they are

incapable of leading others free of wanting personal gain and popularity. However, using the

same System of Checks and Balances as the parameters for the task of leading the country,

artificial intelligence can develop the necessary skills needed to accomplish the job.

Another reason artificial intelligence could lead humans is because of the creation of

world peace. Microsoft, a technological company, shows the practical uses of artificial

intelligence in everyday life. Most of the modern world problems and conflicts are due to the

differences in culture and humanity. However, with the implementation of artificial intelligence

into the government, the computer will be able to run simulations on the outcomes of each

conflict and choose the best and most peaceful way to react to it, ending conflicts to preserve

peace.

There are many pros to artificial intelligence and its usefulness in the society and the

world, but one major con to artificial intelligence is the public’s reaction to a computer

governing the country. As long as there are films and books highlighting the dangers of artificial

intelligence, most notably being “The Terminator”, which is about an artificial intelligent

weapons system spreading to every computer and killing billions of humans through nuclear

warfare, there will not be very much public support for the idea of artificial intelligence doing

better than humans in governing the country. Another major con is that the technology required

to engineer and develop a computer of this magnitude and importance is very limited and cannot

be acquired in the near future, resulting in the notion of artificial intelligent leadership to be

nothing but science fiction in the present world.
