Socratic Circle Reflection on The Great Gatsby

We had the Socratic circle on the great gatsby. My group consisted of Priscila and Sophia
Salcido. Overall we all worked well as a group because we have individual qualities that the
other one does not have. Priscila is good at pressuring people and getting them to rethink their
answers and maybe even realize that she is right. Salcido is good at listening and analyzing what
they are saying in order for her to be able to bring up a good point. And I think that I am good at
making people think of things in different ways than what they expected. Overall we were one of
the groups that did leave a big impact on the circle.
My performance, like I said, was making people think in ways that they maybe hadn’t
thought about before. I said that gatsby could represent God because he died for other’s sins and
heaven was Gatsby’s mansion, he let them be happy and it was a destination for many. One thing
that I could have done better was to organize my thoughts before I spoke because although I did
want to say a lot, sometimes I stumbled over my words. Two of the most original ideas were
Patricks’s idea of the importance of the color yellow, pointing out that even the flower Daisy is
yellow. Also, Mila brought up how god sees through lies just as the eyes saw through the green
glasses. This was very well backed up because she used the color green of the glasses that meant
selfishness and the blue of the eyes as the truth. The truth sees through the selfishness just as
God does.
My thesis statement would be: Although many people may see Gatsby as a person who is
struggling, he does manage to exemplify a christ-like figure by dying for other’s sins, creating a
following, and having a safe place for everyone.
I would talk about how he died and he was ok as long as daisy was not the one getting in
trouble. Gatsby did not choose to have to die, just like Jesus did not. Also, no one came to his
funeral just as no one went to Jesus’. Gatsby’s heaven would be his mansion. He is the ruler of
the kingdom and people always go there because it is like a paradise. And lastly, his following of
the people. All these people would be like Jesus’s disciples. Always wanting to find out more
about Jesus and being amazed by him.
One of the aspects of this book that remind me of my life is the parties. There are many
parties in my city where people are not invited and show up. They are still let in, but they are
only there for themselves, not for the host. Just like in the book, people come from relatively far
places to attend these parties (even from different countries!!).
