Basic information of bridge
The Client
• KONKAN RAILWAY CORPORATION LTD, India
Location
• Crosses Chenab river between Bakkal and Kauri,in Reasi
district of Jammu and Kashmir
The contractor
• Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, Mumbai, India
The Official Project Name
• Design & Construction of Special Bridges across the River
Chenab at km 50/800 on the Katra-Laole section of the
Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project
The bridge site
• Location of the Chenab Bridge in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in India
• The alignment crosses a deep gorge of the Chenab River, which necessitates construction of a long
spam railway bridge.
Description of the Chenab Bridge
• The Chenab Bridge is a steel railway arch bridge
with
• total length of 1315 metres.
• Main arc spam 485 metres
• There are 17 number of spams
• Highest spam is 134 m high
• Deck will carry two railway tracks
• Inclination of slope vary from 43 to 77 degree
• The bridge will be able to withstand earth quake
of intensity 8 on the rector scale
• The bridge costs 512 cr.
Design of Bride
• The design speed of the railway was set to be 100
km/h.
• wind load corresponds to a maximum wind pressure of
1500 Pa.
• the design life had to be 120 years.
• Fatigue assessment has be done as per BS: 5400 Part –
10.
• The superstructure is a plate girder with a closed deck,
where rails are connected.
• The closed deck keeps the rainwater out and provides
mostly dry environment below the deck.
Side elevation of the Chenab Bridge.
Construction method
• The insufficient infrastructure of the area causes problems.
• The bridge consist of about 25000 tonnes of steel structures.
• First, a cable crane has been built over the valley for constructing
the steel structures.
• The crane can deliver a maximum amount of 40 tonnes of steel
parts.
• Derrick crane , which is capable of lifting about 100 tonnes.
• The derrick will crane the arch segments from deck level to the
erection front of the arch.
• Deck erection will proceed simultaneously with the erection of
the arch.
• When the next arch pier location is reached,
temporary cables will be installed to support the
arch and the new arch pier will be constructed on
the free end.
• The superstructure can then be supported by the
arch pier and so forth until the last arch pier is
reached.
• closure of the superstructure is done by means of
derrick erection
• When the job is completed, the sections are turned
around and delivered to the next stage of the
process.
