Negative forms of Adjectives

Adjectives in Japanese are divided into two groups:

い-type adjectives and な-type adjectives

い Type adjectives always have い on the end.

たとえば：おいしい

  たのしい

な Type adjectives always have な on the end.

たとえば：好きな

き
   げん気な

  

Using adjectives are an important way in which we express our opinions about certain things in
our worlds. However, it is important that we learn how to change the form of the adjective
into its negative form.

Changing an adjective into its negative form is different for both い type and な type
adjectives.

Perhaps this paragraph could be removed, it does not serve any

purpose but to provide unnecessary and obvious information for
い-type adjectives students at this level. EAL/D students would benefit from only having
the essential concepts on it. Otherwise modification is not required as
Drop the い, and add くない。 the concepts are clearly explained, the process is sequential and
scaffolded and visual and facial expressions are used to illicit emotion
たとえば： and feelings that are more easily translated into the home language.

• おいしいです   おいしいです おいし＋くないです
おいしくないです。

な-type adjectives

Drop the な, and add じゃない。

たとえば：
• べんりな   べんりな   べんり＋じゃない
べんりじゃないです。

Exceptions!

いいです：

Even though it has an い as the last character, and is technically an い type adjective, in its
negative form:

いいです よくないです。

きれいです：

Even though it has an い character, きれい is actually a な type adjective.

きれいです   きれいじゃないです。
