Topic/Title: Advancement of a Real-Time Smoke Belching Checking System
Adviser:
Background of the Study:
Air pollution in the Philippines are getting worst each year. Main contributors of air pollution are the
smoke that comes from factories, vehicles, forest, and others. Vehicles are the most common of the
pollutants. In Metro Manila about 69% of air pollution comes from the vehicles [1]. This accounts for
the air that we breathe in. The Philippines ranks third on the highest when it comes to death related
to Air pollution, as May of 2018 there were about 45.3 deaths per 100,000 persons due to air
pollution [2]. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on year 2018 registered 11.6 million vehicles which
are 11.4% increased from 2017 with 10.5 million [3]. The enhancement of the growing numbers of
vehicles are extra ordinary and alarming. It is basic for the administration and the engine vehicle
industry in the Philippines to know about the impact and effect of dangers brought about by exhaust
emission pollutants and together to minimize the air pollution caused by the exhaust. Vehicles emits
smoke in its exhaust and it is composed of different chemicals that are harmful to our bodies, and for
the environment some of the chemicals are Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide, and
other toxic particulates. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas it
comes from the incomplete combustion of material containing carbon such as natural gas, gasoline,
kerosene, oil, coal, or wood. [4]. Hydrocarbons are a class of burned or partially burned fuel,
hydrocarbons are considered toxins. Hydrocarbons are a major contributor to smog, which can be a
major problem in urban areas, prolonged exposure to such substance can contribute to diseases like
asthma, liver diseases, lung diseases, and cancer. to test the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon
component of the smoke of a vehicle, a specific sensor is needed to measure the components.

Objective:
The general objective of the research is to develop a monitoring system of smoke belching thus,
transfer this technology to the government and industry

The specific objective of the research are the following:

 To determine the effectiveness of the prototype, compare to the conventional way of testing
smoke emissions.
 To design a database that efficiently store the data gathered from the smoke that is being
emitted by a vehicle.
 To develop an alternative device that can measure the Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon of
smoke emitted by the vehicle.
Methodology:
The researchers will employ mixed method of research methodology. In terms of qualitative method
the researchers will narrate how the device be made using system development life cycle (SDLC):
planning, analysis, design, testing and maintenance, using prototyping model of construction. The
researchers will utilize quantitative method of research to test the reliability, efficiency and accuracy
of the device. Employing survey questionnaire for the data gathering and interpreted using statistical
tools such as Likert’s scale, T-test and analysis of variance.
Functionality:
The function of the devices is as follows:
 Measurement of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon present in the exhaust of the vehicle.
 Real time monitoring of measured data with the help of GSM, and Arduino.
 Alert System for the authority and a database to store the measured values.
 Alternative device to measure and asses the condition of the engine of the vehicle.

Materials:
 MQ – 7 Gas Sensor for measurement of Carbon Monoxide
 MQ – 2 Gas Sensor for measurement of Hydrocarbons
 SIM800L GPS/GSM module to send the gathered data
 Arduino Nano – As the brain of the device
