Assignment 2: Optimisation of the removal of phenols from water samples by

adsorption.

As a waste water (treatment plant) lab Analyst, you are tasked to optimise the
method (because the previous one is inefficient) for the removal of phenols from
water by adsorption. The previous method used the experimental conditions as
those in experiment 3 worksheet.

Briefly explain your plan to carry out this task. To get optimum conditions that would
give a higher removal %, the effects of the following factors on phenol adsorption
should be varied and studied. Where possible indicate and explain the range of
values chosen (e.g. pH 6-9 will be investigated) for each factor:

 Adsorbent type,
 Adsorbent dose,
 Particle size
 Phenols initial concentration
 Solution pH,
 Reaction temperature, and
 Contact time
