Half Report
If the following data was obtained following the procedure (Experiment 3) outlined
in the Waste Water Treatment (CHP 3811) laboratory manual for 2020, compute the
results in the tables below and answer the questions:
Experiment conditions:
Adsorbent type= Activated charcoal (carbon)
Adsorbent dose= 4mg
Particle size= 100 meshes
pH= 9
Contact time= 60 mins
Reaction Temperature= 40°C
Phenol initial concentration=1000μg/L
Sample volume 200 mL
Result table
Phenol standard concentration (μg/L) Absorbance

200 0.1877
300 0.2821
400 0.3686
500 0.4801
600 0.6011
700 0.7101
800 0.8027
900 0.9152
1000 0.9823
Sample 0.3823
Questions
1. Using the data provided in the result table, construct a calibration curve for
phenols standards (absorbance versus concentration). Determine the equation
of the linear “trendline” through the data points.
2. Given the sample absorbance, calculate the concentration of phenol at
equilibrium (solve for x from your trendline equation).
3. Calculate equilibrium amount of phenol adsorbed on activated carbon, using
formula qe (μg/mg)= Co-Ce x V Where, Co is the phenol initial concentration
m
(μg/L), Ce is the equilibrium concentration (μg/L), V is sample volume (L), m is
the mass of adsorbent (mg).
4. Calculate the removal efficiency of phenol from water sample by activated
carbon, %= Co-Ce x 100
