RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1) What is Overclocking?
2) How to overclock a computer?
3) Is it safe to overclock a computer?
4) What are the condition to overclock a computer?

OBJECTIVE

The main purpose to make this project is to enhance my knowledge in computer, as it will also
help me in my subject. Also it is very interesting to know about how a computer is overclocked
safely and how it works. Secondly I want to experience that how my pc works when it will be
overclocked.

CHAPTER- 1

INTRODUCTION

Overclocking is basically a process through which an hardware can reach to its maximum
potential we can enhance the capacity of the computer hardware. Overclocking is the action of
increasing a component’s clock rate, running it at a higher speed than it was designed to run.
This is usually applies to the CPU or GPU, but other components can also be overclocked.

Increasing a component’s clock rate causes it to perform more operations per second, but it also
produces additional heat. Overclocking can help squeeze more performance out of your
components, but they’ll often need additional cooling and care. First we need to know clearly
that what is Overclocking?

WHAT IS OVERCLOCKING?

A CPU or any hardware comes from the factory set to run at a certain maximum speed. If you
run your CPU at that speed with proper cooling, it should perform fine without giving you any
problems.

However, you’re often not limited to that CPU speed. You can increase the CPU’s speed by
setting a higher clock rate or multiplier in the computer’s BIOS, forcing it to perform more
operations per second.

This can speed up your CPU — and therefore speed up your computer if your computer is
limited by its CPU — but the CPU will produce additional heat. It may become physically
damaged if you don’t provide additional cooling, or it may be unstable and cause your computer
to blue-screen or restart.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OVERCLOCKING

There are various requirements for Overclocking the hardware as Overclocking is not a simple
process. If enough care was not taken then it can also damage the hardware. Some basic
requirements for Overclocking are as follows :-

1) Processor/CPU :-
Processor is the main part of the computer it is the brain of the
computer which is responsible for all the actions of computer or we can say all the processing of
the computer. For Overclocking the processor or the CPU must be unlocked and is ready to
Overclock, and it should support SMT (simultaneous multi-threading) or Hyper-threading.
Most of the Intel Processors are not unlocked that's why they are not overclockable, but AMD
(Advanced Micro-Devices) provides the best platform to overclock the processors their Ryzen
series is best for Overclocking as all the processors which belong to this category are unlocked
and are overclockable. The capable processor shows more outputs.

2). A Motherboard/ Chipset:
The Motherboard is the most essential element for
overclocking, it is more important than your CPU compatibility as if your CPU is capable to
overclock itself, it cannot overclock if it is not paired with a compatible Motherboard. Only a
overclocking compatible Motherboard can overclock the CPU, because their VR-AM sections
are strong enough to handle the power and to run the CPU in a steady condition. Even the
cooling of Motherboard is an important factor, these overclocking Motherboards can cool
themselves. Some of the examples of these Motherboards are as follows: Aorus B450, X370,
X470, X570, Z390 etc.

3). Cooling:
As when the CPU is overclocked it exerts extra heat and to handle that extra heat
and to maintain the temperature of CPU as well as Motherboard a good CPU cooler is required.
Overheating can damage the computer components thus adequate cooling is required to cool.
There are basically three types of CPU coolers i.e. Air Cooler, Liquid Cooler and the ultimate
Water Cooler. Basically the air cooler is has two elements i.e. heat-sink and fan, on the other
hand the Liquid cooler or AIO cooler has a radiator, a nozzle, a pump and a fan. In the ultimate
category there lies custom water cooling. The stock coolers are not recommended for
overclocking but liquid and water cooling is best for overclocking. Some examples of CPU
coolers are Chiptronix Diffuser X500, Gamxx GT, Corsair hydro and NZXT Craken series etc.

HOW OVERCLOCKING IS DONE?
There are two major ways to overclock a computer component various component
have their own way of overclocking. Now we will learn how to overclock various
computer components, so let's begin.

1). Overclocking a CPU:-

Firstly we should confirm that our CPU is capable to overclock than we
have to go through the BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) and then we have to go to advance
settings and we have to increase the voltage and the base clockspeed of CPU or processor. We
have to increase the value only a bit as it is really dangerous to increase the value too much as it
effects the functioning of CPU even it can damage the CPU. So, we have to go slow with this
process, after setting the Voltage and clockspeed for example- We should increase 3.2 GHZ to
3.6 GHZ, this is enough of one time. Now we have to test that the combination of clockspeed
and voltage is working properly or not so we have to run a stress-test, there are certain
application for stress-test i.e. Havana, stressor etc. If the system is stable overclocking is
successful and if it shutdowns automatically than system is not stable and needs to be
underclocked a bit.

2). Overclocking a GPU:-
A GPU is computer component which we use for rendering videos
and to view a color enhanced images and videos, its major role is to provide a good display and
to provide higher FPS ( Frame Rates Per Second) during playing high AAA-titles or GPU
oriented games, i.e. GTA-V, Shadow of the tomb raider, PUBG-PC, etc. To overclock a GPU we
need to install a software called "Afterburner". Then we have to increase the base clock and the
fan speed of the GPU slowly. And hence it will get overclocked there is no such issue of stability
of the system, it can perform as you instructs it to perform. But we should not increase the values
too much as it can surely damage your hardware.

3). Overclocking a RAM (Random Access Memory):-
The RAM or Random Access Memory plays a major role in
computer as a computer cannot run or boot without it, higher RAM means faster computer
experience. There are various types of RAMs in the market and the latest type of RAM is DDR4
with 4000 MHZ. But majority is using 3200 MHZ RAM sticks. So, we also continue our
overclocking with same. When a company provides us a RAM they restricts the real
performance of RAM they only allow us to use half performance of RAM, but we can increase
the performance of RAM to its apex. We can did this by enabling the XFR (Extended Frequency
Range) in the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). There are various types of RAM in the market,
but the best of them are Corsair Vengeance LPX, G-SKILL Trident Z-Royal, Adata D-30, etc.

4). Overclocking Monitor:-
A monitor is an output device which is used as a display there are
various types of monitors and they are categorized on the basis of their resolution, Hertz, Color
production, Response time etc. We can enhance the performance of a monitor by overclocking it
we only have to increase the hertz of a monitor and for this we need a GPU, we just have to go in
the driver software of the GPU and increase the Display value and our monitor will get
overclocked, it is easy but we can only increase the value a bit as increasing more value will no
be supported for the monitor.

CHAPTER-3

CONCLUSION
At last I want to conclude that overclocking is a great thing is we want to gain more performance
from the computer without losing/ spending more money. Overclocking has a advantages but at
the same time it also had disadvantages if it is not done properly without a proper knowledge and
we should know about the requirements of overclocking i.e. cooling, compatibility and all that
stuff.
Finally, overclocking helps us to feel the real performance of our hardware or the real power of
our hardware which is restricted by the producer, This project helps me in knowing all about
overclocking and I also enjoyed doing with my own pc. My PC specs are:-
1) CPU- AMD Ryzen 3600
2) Motherboard- Aorus B450 Pro Wi-Fi
3) RAM- Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4, 16 GB dual channel memory
4) GPU- Nvdia Gefore GTX 1660 Ti
5) HDD- Seagate Barracuda 1 TB
6) SSD- Kingston 240 GB
7) PSU- Cooler master 550W
8) Cabinet- ANT ESPORT ICE 400 TG
