Newmark’s chart
• If the length of one unit equals to z, then the
radius of the ring is equal to R.
• The area inside each circle is the ratio of z/q.
• The area inside the first circle is 0.1, and the area
inside the second circle is 0.2, etc.
• To be able to measure the area inside the circle,
the area is divided in to a number of pieces. Each
piece between the circle and radical lines is a
unit.

uniformly loaded flexible area of
any shape
Determine the depth z below the
uniformly loaded area where the
stress increase is desired.
Plot the plan with a scale z=AB
Place the Plan on the chart in
such a way that the required point
coincide with the center.
Count the number of elements M
of the chart enclosed by the plan.
