DISCUSSION

Robinsons Place Manila is a seven level outlet and shopping location located at Ermita, Manila
.that. offers the widest range. of merchandise ..and services from. over a thousand local. and
international .retail shops, dining outlets, entertainment. facilities and .service centers. Since its
establishment in. the 80s, it has continually. evolved to become the. ultimate shopping and
dining haven to.over 1.5 million Manilenos who live and thrive. in the city. It has successfully
reinvented. itself not only to keep up with the times but. more importantly to provide
.additional values to its growing .number of clients and patrons.
The truss in the picture is a set of .straight members or elements, pinned together at their ends,
with forces applied .only at the joints. Under .these conditions, each .member in a truss is loaded
only at its ends. Some. of the loads may be coming from the externally .applied forces, and
others will be coming from .the members to which it’s connected, but .whatever their source, the
loads are acting .exclusively at the ends.
The picture taken was an example of Warren .Truss which is a very popular. truss structure
system and is easily identified. by its construction from equilateral. triangles. One of the main
advantages of a Warren .Truss is its ability to spread the load evenly. across a number of
different members; this is however. generally for cases when the structure. is undergoing a
spanned .load (a distributed load). Its main advantage .is also the cause of its. disadvantage – the
truss structure will undergo. concentrated force under a point load. Under these. concentrated
load scenarios, the structure is not .as good at distributing the load evenly. across its members.
Therefore the Warren truss type is more. advantageous for span has equal length. compression
and tension web members.
The principal force in each element. in a truss is axial tension or compression. In this example,
the truss comprise assemblies of tension .and compression elements. The top and bottom. chords
of the truss provide the tension and .compression resistance to overall. bending, and the bracing
resists the shear forces. A wide. range of truss forms can be created. Each can vary. in overall
geometry and in the choice of the individual elements.
