VIDEO ANALYSIS

For today, we will be watching a video about our topic for today. After you’ve watched the video,
through groups, brainstorm about what the video tells about social work.

Social Change- Through social work we can eradicate the problems in our society. Knowledge and
theoretical perspectives were derived from social and psychological sciences that aim to promote
individual and social change

Problem solving in human relationships- resolving personal and interpersonal conflicts, sometimes they
serve as mediators, they intervene in disputes between parties to help them find compromises,
reconcile differences and reach mutually satisfying agreements. They must take a neutral stance on the
situation. Example, child custody, annulment

Enhance well-being- they help individual meet their basic human needs, with particular attention to the
needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. 

Well-being- the state of comfortable, happy and healthy life

Government welfare- . Many social workers work as a part of a government agency or an


organization closely tied with the local government.
Social justice- concept of human rights and equality equal access to wealth, opportunities, and
privileges within a society.

Fairness- giving what he or she really needs or deserves

Social care- a wide variety of people in the community, from friends to parents, relatives, volunteers
to all people of goodwill participate in providing social care.

Charity Organization Societies were made up of charitable groups that used scientific


philanthropy to help poor, distressed or deviant persons.
Basic concept of social work
Meaning- To help an individual be included in the society and to transform every society that
creates structures that marginalize individuals from full participation in the enjoyment of social
services and resources of the community. Change sought is one that makes an individual and
the community a better place for everyone.

Jane Addams

On September 6, 1860, in Cedarville, Illinois a prominent figure within American social


welfare history was born. Jane Addams, also known as the “Mother of Social Work,”
was an advocate for social welfare through her efforts in bringing the settlement
movement from Europe to the United States. Upon visiting London’s first settlement
home, known as Toynbee Hall in 1888, Adams was inspired to bring an institution like
this to the United States after returning to her home state of Illinois. On September 18,
1889, using her family’s accumulation of wealth, as well as funding from charitable
donations, Addams founded the first settlement house in America.

Known as Hull House, this settlement house served European immigrants who had
recently emigrated to Chicago in a variety of capacities. The majority of these
immigrants had made the long and enduring journey from a number of European
countries including Germany, Italy, Sweden, England, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Norway,
Greece and France. Located in Chicago’s Near West Side, Hull House’s primary purpose
was to provide English and citizenship education for these new immigrants upon
arriving to this country.
 Empower people, individually and collectively, to
utilize their own problem solving and coping capabilities
effectively.
 Support a proactive position with regard to social and
economic policy development to prevent problems for
individuals and society from occurring.
 Uphold the integrity of the profession in all aspects of
social work practice.
 Establish linkages between people and societal
resources to further social functioning and enhance the
quality of life.
 Develop cooperative networks within the institutional
resources system.
 Facilitate the responsiveness of the institutional
resource systems to meet health and human service needs.
 Promote social justice and equality of all people with
regard to full participation in society.
 Contribute to the development of knowledge for
social work profession through research and evaluation.
 Encourage exchange of information in those
institutional systems in which both problems and resources
opportunities produced.
 Enhance communication through an appreciation of
diversity and through ethnically sensitive, non sexist social
work practice.
 Employ educational strategies for the prevention and
resolution of problems.
Embrace a world view of human issues and solutions to

Principles vs core values


Principles are rules or laws, permanent, unchanging
Values-belief that an individual upholds over certain issue
Social work- its main purpose is the fulfillment of the social
welfare delivery for the general promotion of well being and
quality of life of all people. However, tandaan po natin ang
main concern po ng social work are those people who suffer
some forms of exclusions from social services

Respect for human rrights


1. Upholding and promoting human dignity and well being-
social workers should respect the dignity and worth of
persons. Social workers must treat each person in a caring
and respectable manner despite of individual differences
and diversity and everything to enhance people capacities.
2. Respecting the right to self determination- Social workers
should respect, promote and support the right of people to
make their own choices and decisions despite of their
values and life choices provided that this does not threaten
the rights, safety and interests of others.
3. Promoting the right to participation- Social workers work toward
building the self-esteem and capabilities of people by promoting full
involvement and participation from them to empower them in all aspects of
decisions and actions that affect their lives.
4. Creating a person as a whole- Social work must not focus only on one issue.
They focus on all aspects affecting the lives of persons. They look onto the
physiological, psychologicalfand social factors of a persons life like family,
community, culture and environment.
5. Identifying and developing strengths- social workers should focus on the
strengths of the individuals, groups, communities to promote empowerment
Empowerment- having the control, confidence on something
Dignity- the right of person to be valued
Social justice
1. Challenging discrimination
Discrimination-unfair or unequal treatment of individual or groups based on
different characteristics.
Social workers must make measures or ways to eliminate discrimination on the
basis of age, gender or sex,culture, marital status, socio-economic status, skin color ,
racial,physical characteristics, sexual orientation or spiritual beliefs on the access of
resources. Removing the barriers to access services.
2. Recognizing diversity-
Social workers should recognize and respect people with different backgrounds.
They must interact in ways better for the individuals or groups. CUulturally
competent-you inderstand the language, cultural aspect, economic,social aspects of
people
3. Distributing resources-Social work should distribute resources fairly and equitably.
4. Challenging unjust policies and practices- Social workers work to bring attention the
policies and practices that are unfair,harmful and oppresive. Laws that are unfair to
women revised penal code adultery and concubinage

5. Working in solidarity- Social workers work to engage different groups, families,
communities, institutions to achieve positive social change.
Professional integrity
 Upholding the values and reputation of the profession- Social workers should act at
all times in accordance with the values and principles of social work
 Being trustworthy- Social workers should work in a way that is honest, reliable,
open and clearly explaining the roles, interventions, and decisions that do not
manipulate individuals or group.
 Maintaining professional boundaries- Social workers should work not to abuse their
position for personal benefit, financial gain or sexual exploitation.
 Making considered professional judgments- Social workers should make judgments
based on balanced and considered reasoning. Kung ano ang tama at ma makakabuti
talaga sa mga tao.
 Beibg professionally accountable- Social workers should be prepared and
accountable to justify their judgments and actions to people who use services.

CORE VALUES
1. COMPASSION- it is an imporatant value of social work. Social work as
compassion as a core value is having the motivation to relieve the suffering.
2. Service-Social work is a work beyond pay. Social workers consist also of
charity and professional service. Social workers prioritize the needs of others
rather than their personal interest. and use their skills and knowledge (from
education and experience) to help people. Social workers often volunteer their time — in
addition to their paid services — with no expectation for financial reward
3. Social justice-Social workers advocate on behalf of the oppressed, the voiceless, and
others who are unable to advocate for themselves. They often focus on issues such as
poverty, homelessness, discrimination, harassment, and other forms of injustice. Social
workers provide information, help, and other resources to people seeking equality, and
they educate people who may not directly experience discrimination about the struggles
of the less fortunate.
4. Dignity and worth of the person- Every person is different, with different cultural and
social values. Social workers are mindful of those differences, treating each person with
dignity and respect and promoting their clients’ capacity and opportunity to address their
own needs and improve their personal situations.
5. Importance of human relationships-Social workers connect people who need
assistance with organizations and individuals who can provide the appropriate help. 
6. integrity-In order to facilitate these relationships and improve others’ lives, social
workers must exhibit trustworthiness at all times. Each social worker must be continually
aware of the profession’s mission, values, and ethical principles and standards, and set a
good example of these components for their clients. By behaving honestly and
responsibly, 
7. Competence-each social worker must practice within his or her scope of competence
and avoid misrepresenting his or her skills or experience to potential clients. Social
workers must continually strive to expand their knowledge base and competence in order
to make meaningful contributions to the profession.
