Socio-Economic Determinants of Child Malnutrition

in Uttar Pradesh

Deepika Nischal
Agency : Under weight, Malnutrition, Standard of Living Index, Socio-Economic Determinants
Objective : The present study "Socio-Economic Determinants of Child Malnutrition" done over a period of 3 months (1st February - 30th April
2012) intends to
Identify the Socio-Economic Determinants of Malnutrition among children of age 12-23 months.
Study the association of those socio-economic determinants on malnutrition, among children of age 12-23 months.

Background : Despite the considerable expansion and additional investments made after 2005, progress in alleviating the problem of malnutrition
in children has been slow and uneven. The levels of under-nutrition continue to remain unacceptably high and the rates of reduction in under
nutrition over time are disappointingly low. But it is evident that without properly identifying the determinants of Child Malnutrition, applying
interventions may not prove to be much effective.

Methodology : The study used the primary data of The Integrated Nutrition and Health Project-III, 2009-10 with reference to mothers of children
(age 12-23 months) from Uttar Pradesh. It utilized Descriptive Cross-Sectional Research Design. Data of this study have been analyzed using
SPSS-13. Descriptive statistics are used to assess the effect of socio-economic factors on child malnutrition.

Findings : The findings of this study reveal that more than half (56%) of the children in the state of Uttar Pradesh were malnourished and still half
of these malnourished children were severely malnourished. It was found that factors like increased number of earning members in the house,
more age interval between that children, improved standard of living, exclusive breast feeding at least up to 6 months of age and initiation of
complementary feeding by the age of 6-7 months has negative association with the child malnutrition i.e., increase in these factors lead to
decrease in the malnutrition among children of 12-23 months age, However, factors like schedule caste and childhood illness have positive
association with malnutrition, meaning, thereby that an increase in these factors increases malnutrition among children.

Recommendations : Improve ICDS services increase number of Anganwari centres and proper monitoring.

The present study "Socio-Economic Determinants of Child Malnutrition" done over a period of 3 months (1st February - 30th April 2012) intends to
