Background:
The targets within the Meat Industry Strategic Plan (MISP) 2020 relevant to the goat industry
include:
engage at least 2,000 producers (across species) in programs that will build knowledge and
skills to improve business performance by 5% or more
improvement in total factor productivity of 0.5% for goat.
In order to reach these targets, both an increase in the number of producers and volume of turn off
is needed. A number of best practice resources already exist to assist new and existing goat
producers in ramping up their production sustainably; however, several gaps have been identified
which may be best filled with the development of a series of short educational/instructional how-to
videos, designed to support the existing materials.
The videos will be used to enhance the resources supporting MLA extension programs. The videos
will target producers and livestock consultants and service providers.
Project objectives:
Deliver MLA approved videos, no more than 3 minutes each and animations could be included if
necessary.
1. Deliver MLA approved short videos (of up to 3 minutes each) targeting existing and potential
goat producers on the following topics:
a. Goat hoof trimming
b. Transport guidelines to support the Fit to Load Guide. Must address recommended
stock densities on trucks and include applicable content for sheep, cattle and goats
(potentially as separate videos).
c. How to calculate browse in your paddock and factor this into your feed assessments
d. Feed nutrition reports – what to look for, how to use, how to interpret
e. What should be fed to goats and how much
f. Six producer proof of profit case studies/stories with focuses on some of the
following topics as an example – appropriate goat fencing and fencing training, how
we successfully diversified into goats, weed management using goats, goat grazing
strategies, total grazing pressure management and goats, worm monitoring and
control in goats, advantages of retention of does and kidding management,
economic and environmental opportunities of stocking goats, restocking
opportunities
g. Recommended and innovative yard and fence designs and labour saving tools.
Animations could be included and the videos must comply with MLA branding guidelines. They
must also align to the cattle/sheep/goat welfare standards and guidelines and to the latest R&D
findings in animal welfare.
Methodology:
Whilst not limiting the capacity of the applicant to develop any particular methodology, it is
envisioned that the methodology may include the following:
either a subject matter expert or filming crew may act as project leader and coordinator.
depending on the experience of the project leader suitably experienced film crews and/or
subject matter experts (to assist with technical content) will need to be sourced
video scripts must be approved by MLA before filming commences and include strong calls
to action for the viewers
source producers and animals to conduct the relevant procedures featured in the videos
(with MLA assistance to find suitable ‘talent’)
seek Animal Ethics approval if needed
alignment to the key messages within the MLA goat communication plan
close liaison with GICA, the MLA Goat Industry Project Manager and MLA’s Communications,
Promotions and Engagement team
travel to regional locations

with appendices as required, to address any specific requirements. The application must be
submitted as a Microsoft Word Document. To access the project application template, go to
https://www.mla.com.au/research-and-development/funding-opportunities/industry-researchers/
Please note delivery dates included in the application must be realistic as it will be MLA’s

on assessment against the following criteria:
