DEVELOP POLICY
1. LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY DOCUMENTS THAT DESCRIBE
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR TINY OPERA COMPANY:
Compliance Requirements includes:
- Office of Environment and Heritage (NSW)
- Building Code of Australia (for the renovation of the hall)
- Noise (installing wall-mounted radiators, a dishwasher and oven, a wood heater)
- Electrical Safety
- Paints and Solvents
- Personal Protective Requirements

2. BEST PRACTICE MODELS USED BY THEATRES AND PERFORMANCE


SPACES:
- Tiny Opera Company has created a new position for developing a sustainability
project. Tiny Opera company was having a share by a wealthy landowner in the
area who donated $2.3 million to support the purchase of a venue and the ongoing
operation of the theatre. The donation had helped the Tiny Opera company to keep
going with the theatre’s renovations; such as: painting internal walls; installing
wall-mounted radiators throughout the theatres, dressing rooms and break room;
installing a dishwasher and oven in the kitchen; installing a wood heater in the
meeting room.
- Therefore, Tiny Opera Company has staged regular performances in the theatre
from the 1970s onwards (regular oncoming profit to help the theatre’s growing in
sizes and quality services for the town). Also, The Tiny Opera Company built a
small office building to serve the growing number full time staff (creating a better
working environment for the employees and management).
- Tiny Opera Company has created a new position for a sustainability project
officer to review work practices, especially the use of costume, props, lighting and
facilities, as well as communications, and equal employment opportunity
practices.
- The requirement is to develop and /or increase sustainability practices across the
organisation.
- Waste Reduction and Recycling can be also used to reduce the resource use (the
company’s commitment)
- Energy saving.

3. DEVELOP THREE OPTIONS FOR THE DIRECTION


A. OPTION 1: Plain Language Policy
- This policy is required to used a clear and easy words to help the reader easy to
understand the message.
- Who is applied to? – Its applied to everyone, including internal and external
visitors to the theatre.
- How to implement the policy to the use? It depends on what is the message
deliver to the users/readers. An example is when reminding the staffs to make sure
the lights will have to be turned off at the end of day, the signage or a note will be
designed to stick on the door or walls which is invisible to everyone so the staffs
don’t forget to turn off the lights as instructed.

B. OPTION 2: Internal Memos


- Internal Memos is one of the option that helps the training staffs becoming easier
with notes, diagrams or any kind of short documents. A business memo is a form
of written communication that records events, observations, and other
essential details of a given topic.
- Who is applied to? For internal staffs and/or internal visitors only.
- How to implement the policy to the use? The internal memos normally include the
topic of the document, the name of the receiver, the date, the time and subject. For
example, when a director wants to pass the communications to the directed team,
the subject should be cleared to the change of acts, when and how it is to start for
change. There should be a date and time given to the short communication.
C. OPTION 3: External Publicity Materials
- Who is applied to? To the external public users, examples: clients, marketers,
promoters, reporters, audiences…
- When to use the external publicity materials? – The publicity materials include:
leaflets, brochures, posters, wall decors, signage and/or any marketer’s creation to
attract the public to the theatre.

4. Preferred Option can be considered is to gain or develop the plain language policy in
the company. It helps a better understanding to training new staffs and team in both
short term and long term. It also cost less but helping the training much easier by
using a very clear language. Programming of all reverse-cycle air conditioners in the
office to automatically switch off by a set timer of every day uses.

5. A Sustainability Policy for Tiny Opera Company:


- Sustainability practice is directly affected by legislation standard and also
reporting requirement the areas of sustainability that Tiny Opera Company wants
to focus on:
a. Minimising resource use
b. Using resources more efficiently
c. Reducing toxic material and hazardous chemical use
d. Employing life cycle management approaches
e. Implementing a sustainability continuous improvement strategy

6. AN OUTLINE TINY OPERA COMPANY’S COMMITMENT TO THE POLICY :


- The company is committed to providing timely management review of sustainable
business, operating procedures and practices. Commit is to track, measuring and
report on the performance of the implementation of sustainability practice.

7. AN OUTLINE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUSTAINABILITY


LEGISLATION THAT APPLIES TO TINY OPERA COMPANY:
- Environment Protection Act 1997: this legislation protects the environment from
pollution and its effects. The Act provides the regulatory framework to help
reduce and eliminate the discharge of pollutant into the air, land and water.
- The Equal Employment Act: the Equal Opportunity for women in the workplace
is an example of this practice. It requires the organization (more employees
employed) to plan and report on their programs to ensure that women are given
equal opportunities in employment, development and promotion.
- The Energy Efficiency Opportunities Act 2006

- The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act: requires the company who
meets the threshold to report on their greenhouse gas emissions, energy
production and energy consumption.

8. Strategies for maximizing the impact of the policy


a. Training
- Providing a detailed training to the new and existing employees with a clear
directions and plans. A follow up report can be produced to ensure the employees
are aware of the company’s policy and procedures.
b. Marketing
- Planning and implementing a clear plan to a director with a target to be achieved.
Who is targeted? How much will the company spend to maximize the profit each
year? How long does it take to see the result? What strategies of marketing is to be
used to promoting the company’s products and services?
c. Stakeholder engagement
- Update and provide a great positive results which is based on the profit/loss report
from the accountant each year. Any income should be listed out, as same as the
expenses to help the stakeholder have a clear what company’s operation is up to.
The profit/loss report must be clear, honest and accurate.
