Build and Turn Well Planning Methods

Click the Build Turn radio button on the Plan Editor > Plan Tab

There are eight different build and turn curves. The mathematics of these curves assume
that the wellbore is wrapped around the surface of a cylinder. The shape of the wellbore is
resolved into two planes, vertical (inclination) and horizontal (direction). The build rate is the
inclination change rate, and the turn rate is the direction change rate.

Designing a Build Turn Profile

1. Access the Plan Tab (Plan Editor Dialog).

2. Click the Build Turn radio button in the Planning Methods section of the Plan tab.
3. At the bottom of the Plan tab, select the build turn plan method you want to use.

 Build & Turn to Measured Depth - Apply a build and turn rate until the specified
measured depth or course length is reached.

 Build & Turn to True Vertical Depth - Apply a build and turn rate until the specified
true vertical depth is reached. You may specify a TVD, or select a target to define the TVD.

 Build & Turn to Inclination - Apply a build and turn rate until the wellbore
reaches the specified inclination.

 Build & Turn to Azimuth - Apply a build and turn rate until the wellbore reaches
the specified direction.

 Tangent to Point - Enter build and turn rates. COMPASS adds three sections. It
applies the build and turn rates until the path is pointed to either the correct direction or
inclination, whichever can be achieved first. The second section is either a build or a turn to
complete the projection. If the wellpath is pointed to the correct inclination, then a turn is applied
to reach the required direction. If the wellpath is pointed to the correct direction, then a build or
drop is applied to reach the required inclination. Because the wellbore is now pointing at the
target, the third section is a hold to target.

 Plan to Point - Enter a point or select a target to aim for. COMPASS will compute
the build and turn rates required to hit the target in a single curve.

 Online by TVD - Enter a point or select a target to aim for. Specify the depth
(True Vertical Depth) by which you want to be online to hit the target. COMPASS adds two
sections - a build turn section to get the wellbore online by the TVD, and then a hold section to
reach the target.

4. Click:

 Calculate button to compute the plan section.

 Calculate + Next button to compute the plan section based on the current parameters, and then
move the focus to the next plan section. Using this button, you can calculate several plan
sections without clicking on the blank new row in the grid after each calculation.

Note: The Calculate or Calculate + Next buttons will remain grey and inactive until the two
unknown parameters have been selected.
