REACTION PAPER No. 005

ACTIVITY / TOPIC ORAL HYGIENE PRESENTATION FOR THE CHILDREN OF

SAN ROQUE PARISH DAYCARE CENTER

DATE OF ACTIVITY October 8, 2019

Review of the Activity

Today, the presentation was about oral hygiene. The day started as usual, the class met up
at the San Roque Parish Church Activity Center and our attendance was checked. We passed our
reaction papers with the oral diagnosis and consent forms of the kids we are taking care of. The
group that was assigned on clinic duty
started preparing and doing the inventory
while the oral hygiene group organized their
stuff for the presentation. We idled at the
pantry room after the attendance because it
was a little too early to go to the
kindergarten. Patients were already waiting
at the medical clinic waiting area, some of
them were for complete denture, waiting to
be assessed whether they are qualified for
the one day complete denture that will be
done there. After awhile, we went to the
kindergarten via tricycle.

Upon arriving, there were only a few
kids present so we waited again for the
others to arrive before the oral hygiene group started their presentation. When the kids arrived,
the group immediately started their presentation, introducing themselves and then, doing a sing
and dance number for the kids. After that, a toothfairy came in and started introducing her
friends, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and floss. Before starting their discussion, they
conducted a game with the kids, where they have to put the food they are holding whether it
makes the teeth happy or sad. After that, the toothfairy started discussing the proper ways of
brushing, using mouthwash and flossing. They then asked for volunteers from the kids to
demonstrate how to do the mentioned procedures. The kids actively participated in the activity
and after that, the group gave their gifts to the kids, which consisted of a small toothbrush and
toothpaste, and a cup. The group finished their presentation a little early so we decided to play
with the kids for awhile before leaving.
We went back to San Roque Parish Church via tricycle again and our attendance was
checked. We dropped by the dental clinic to see how the others were doing and then, the class
went their separate ways.
Learnings:
I learned that you can teach oral hygiene and the proper ways to do it in a fun, interactive
way where the kids won’t get bored and in a way where they can relate to because the concept is
quite familiar to them. I also learned that brushing your teeth after every meal along with using a
mouthwash and floss can help prevent the decay of the teeth and can also help in maintaining our
body’s health and nutrition.
As for the kids, they learned that brushing once a day isn’t enough and that brushing every after
meal is important so that their teeth won’t
hurt and that it don’t get “black”. They also
learned to control their intake of sweets and
what foods are good for their teeth.

Review of Presentation
I think the presentation was very interactive as well as informative. They used the concept of a
toothfairy introducing her friends, which
were the toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash
and floss so the kid’s attention were on
them. The kids actively listened, watched
Fig. 3 Toothbrushing and participated throughout the whole
presentation so it was an effective strategy
to teach the kids. Even after the
presentation, the kids were still discussing the ways to brush their teeth so I think the group did a
very good job teaching oral hygiene to the kids.
