CHAKRAVARTI SAMRAT
for posterity. However, when they realise and understand the startling
reality of human life, its temporal, mundane transitory nature, they
ultimately become modest, unpretending, unassuming and humble.
Once there was a very brave, courageous and ambitious king named
'Bharat' in India. At that time, there were many small kingdoms around
his empire. Bharat wanted to bring them all under his rule. He had a very
strong army. He, therefore, decided to conquer those small kingdoms
one after the other. As per his plan, he attacked the kingdoms one by
one, conquering them all and brought all those small kingdoms under
his rule. He thus became a 'Chakravarti' i.e., a great emperor of India. As
he became the supreme king and a supreme ruler, he became arrogant,
boastful and egoistic. He desired to carve his name on the rocks and
mountains so that the historians can note his greatness and write about
him in the books of history for posterity.
In those days the Rishabhakuta mountain was famous for carving
the names of Chakravarti Kings, the great emperors. Chakravarti Bharat
thought of carving his name as a 'Chakravarti' on the same rock of
Rishibhakuta Parvat. He took 'Kakini Ratna' which can work as precious
chisel and went up the mountain. When he went on the rock, he became
nervous to see that it was already full of many names of Chakravarti
kings. There was no proper place available for Bharat to carve his name
there. He got one idea. He thought of scratching one name and putting
his name there. He took Kakini Ratna and started scratching one name.
Suddenly a thought came to his mind that in future, somebody else may
come here and scratch out my name also. With this he became pensiv
and realised the temporary, transitory, and temporal nature of human
life including name and fame; put his head down and went back to his
royal house in despair.

“Out of relations that we make in our journey of life till our last
breath, the relation with your MOTHER is 9 months MORE” and these 9
months is the most crucial phase. Every month marks a new milestone
in the fetus growth which MUST be supported with adequate nourishment
by the MOTHER TO BE. So let’s explore the Tantra and Mantra of
‘RIGHT NUTRITION AT THE RIGHT TIME’ by the MOTHER TO BE.
M Manage the Calorie Intake: Energy requirement increases
during pregnancy to support the growing placenta, fetus and the
increased BMR of the mother. ICMR recommends additional 300 kcal per
day. This is equivalent to 1 big glass of milk+ 1 whole fruit+ 1 fistful of
nuts/ 3 chapatis + 1 bowl of pulses+ 1 whole fruit. The source of these
additional 300kcal is equally important as these calories MUST provide
NUTRITION as well. Even 1 vada pav provides 300 kcal but that is not the
rationale way of supporting the nutrition requirement. RIGHT CHOICE is

O Optimum Protein Intake: Proteins are the building blocks of our
body. The amino acids in the proteins are in demand by the fetus for its
growth and repair. The aminotic fluid that surrounds the fetus is also a
protein derivative. The maternal increase in blood volume also craves for
proteins. ICMR recommends additional 15gm protein per day. This is
equivalent to 2 glasses of milk+ 2 bowl of curds/1 big glass of milk +

The human body is an amazing thing. For each one of us, it’s the
most intimate object we know. And yet most of us don’t know enough
about it: its features, structures, functions, quirks, and mysteries. Think
of it as a mini digital encyclopedia with a dose of wow which if not kept
active and cared for result in various issue affecting all-round health. For
the benefit of all and as students of Yogabhyas, to understand the
Human Anatomy & Physiology, the normal parameters that govern these
beautiful systems is of utmost importance. Therefore, Yoga Vidya
Niketan took us students of the 42nd batch to the esteemed Grant
Medical College & Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals.
The curiosity levels were at its peak when we entered the
Department of Anatomy. The body parts were meticulously divided into
various sections - The head and its parts, the vertebral column, the three
large cavities, viz. thoracic, abdominal and pelvic with the viscera in
each, the specimens of the different foetal developmental stages, the
rare deformities in each, so on and so forth. What a wonder this system
crossed a thought while we observed each of those parts and tried to
recollect what was taught in class. Amazed, fascinated and absolutely
enchanted by this brilliant mechanism created by God, we learnt how to
respect our bodies, also called the temple of God, furthermore.
After viewing the various parts of the body and a break for
refreshments, we headed to the Department of Forensics which is also
known as the ‘Chirfad Department’. Dr. Chikhalkar briefed us about the
other aspects of medicine and that took us to another important aspect
of Forensics. He very well touched upon the amalgamation of Yoga with
Medicine and how Yogic Therapy has become beneficial in today’s times.
He emphasised on the fact that there’s Life beyond dissections, Dharana
Dhyana and Samadhi which should be the ultimate aim of a person’s life.
He congratulated us all for having selected ‘Yoga’ as our Way of Life and
said that death is inevitable and added saying in Marathi, “nantar smriti
rupe bhetnar”.. which means later we all shall become a beautiful
memory to each other and nothing else.
Dr. Chikhalkar said, “Dead do tell tales, they never talk lies”. With
raised eyebrows and sheer astonishment, we were eager to know what
else doctor had to share. He further said, the dead body tells us who
killed me, which weapon was used and when; whether the body was
sexually assaulted or not, tortured in police custody or not, thrown in
the river, etc. All these examinations dig out the unsaid truth.
He gave an overview of a Yogi’s life which was energised with an
interplay of psychosomatic asanas and the surreal pranayamas which
helped train the kapicitta, i.e. the monkey mind making it calm and fit
for this journey called life. This practical knowledge of the human body
parts makes one teach yogabhyas more efficiently, keeping normal
parameters in mind. The asanas like Sulabha Matsyendrasana help in
improving the efficiency of the pancreas, hence regulating Insulin levels,
regular practice of which can help keep diabetes at bay. Doctor further
pointed out that we must eat right, remember the importance of Aahaar,
and not fall prey to the generation next perils like ordering online food
items on Uber Eats, Zomato etc. He said we must use platforms like
WhatsApp not for ‘vivad’ but rather for ‘sanvad’ and promote health,
giving mental health utmost priority. In the new age today, following the
Western culture we Indians have forgotten our roots. Live-in
relationships, divorces and suicide rates have increased all due to mental
disturbances, negativity and depression.
Whilst we sat there in the forensics department, a question crossed
my inquisitive mind. I went ahead and raised my hand to ask the doctor,
during his tenure in the department, could he share his experience of
kheer till he felt filled to the brim and then performed vamana, forceful
vomiting till the entire kheer was out. Later, he ate the vomit till his
‘vasana’, a term in Indian philosophy which means longing for,
expectation or desire for kheer in this case, died. After which, Dr.
exclaimed, “Rhunadab zhala” and he passed away.
We were transported to another world. The world of a Yogi who
engages in a definite, step-by-step procedure by which the body and
mind are disciplined, and the soul liberated. In the most well-known
Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, it says, “The true renunciate and the
true Yogi are those who perform dutiful actions without desiring their
fruits, not those who, eschewing self-offering, act with ego-motivation,
nor those who (in the name of renunciation) eschew action.”
According to Swami Kriyananda, the difference between a Yogi and
an average person is that the Yogi accepts with equanimity whatever is.
To a Yogi, all things and all creatures are just plays of divine light and
shadow. They react appropriately, but in their heart they see everything
as aspects of the eternal drama of the Divine.
Engrossed into Dr. Chikalkar’s talk, I thought to myself about the joy
of being a Yogi, the content of simple living, the need of having a
detached life and thanking the universe for this gift which I had made my
way of life. Later, we saw some live specimens of the skull, body parts
and foetus. Understood the breathing process as doc showed us the
amazing bucket and pump handle mechanism of the respiratory system,
leaving us all awestruck.
As the sun shone right above us and there came noon, we dispersed
ending yet another interesting day of our lives. We were extremely lucky
and the privileged few to have had this novel experience which wouldn’t
have been possible without our Guruji, Padmashree Yogacharya Shri
Sadashiv Nimbalkarji, members and teachers of the Yoga Vidya Niketan
fraternity. Eternally grateful and happy to be a part of this beloved
YoViNi parivaar!

terminology was given where body is the hardware, mind is the software
and spirit is the programmer. Mind (software) controls the physical body
(hardware) and with Yogic lifestyle one can control physical body and its
ailments. Maintaining Yogic balance between body, mind and spirit and
by uniting them, one achieves health. Western Medicine defines health
as absence of dis-ease whereas Yoga defines dis-ease as absence of good
health. Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to
progress towards improved health and well-being through application of
philosophy and practice of Yoga. Benefits of Yoga are seen even at the
cellular level. The endocrine system is maintaining the homeostasis
where the Pituitary gland – the master gland – is fixing the abnormalities
by correcting the altered hormonal homeostasis. Every cell in human
body contains infinite wealth of intelligence, discipline and
consciousness and in diseased state this functions are altered. Here Yoga
helps by bringing back cell functions by influencing Endocrinal glandular
system and it is seen that even the diseases like cancer can be cured by
bringing back the intelligence, discipline and consciousness to the
cancerous cells. Most chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and
cardiovascular disorders have genetic predisposition. Diseases manifest
when this genetic predisposition is converted to genetic expression
through one’s lifestyle choices (epigenetics) and this is completely within
one’s control. Therefore, it can be called that genetic predisposition is
like a ‘loaded gun’ for these chronic diseases and ‘trigger’ of gun is one’s
lifestyle choice. This is how exactly the primary prevention of diseases
work by adaptation of Yoga as lifestyle.
Another point of debate was that Yoga Therapy needs to be
standardised. Many medical professionals still do not believe and are
not yet ready to accept Yoga as Therapy. Reason put forward is that it is
not a science and can’t be standardised. Hence they are not prepared to
acknowledge Yoga Therapy as science. In this argument they miss out
the important point that Yoga Therapy is not evidence based medicine
but rather a practice-based evidence. It requires personalized lifestyle
goal. Next day in a press conference Dr Ornish published his views and
to the world it was announced that “Yoga and vegetarian diet reverses
heart disease”. Thereafter for next 30 years till date, Dean Ornish
Institute has been researching in this field and has treated hundreds and
thousands of terminally ill patients by successfully reversing their
disorders by empowering them with Yogic lifestyle and Yogic practices.
When this conference began we all were excited and wondering
what would be there for us for the next three days to take away from
this conference? Sincerely the next three days were really a treat for
everyone as all the lecturers were exponents in the field of Yoga and it
can easily be seen from the summary we have tried to present here.
Although it wasn’t possible for one to attend all presentations but,
whatever we could gather had been so fascinating that we would appeal
one and all, not to miss such excellent opportunities anytime in the
future.
One of the most important messages this Conference conveyed is
that although Yoga as Therapy is for gross physical body, the therapeutic
treatments do not merely treat the physical body but they have subtler
effect on mental as well as spiritual well-being too. In this context
statement of Dr. Dean Ornish sums it up well -
‘The physical heart is a metaphor for the spiritual heart’.
