CHAKRAVARTI SAMRAT

Everyone is proud of oneself. Each

one has a unique personality and
special qualities. One thinks that his/
her qualities are incomparable.
Everyone is boastful of one's own
personality and proud of one's own
identity too. 'I'ness is very pre-
dominant in each and every person,
generally. One can never forget one's own 'I'ness. If a person becomes
successful, even in a petty and trivial job, he/she will usually start
boasting about it. He thinks that nobody else can do the work as he has
done. Only foolish people think themselves very great. In reality, such
persons are insignificant and unimportant in comparison with others
who are really great. The world is very vast and hence, no person can
boast to be the greatest or superior-most. The really great and wise
persons never boast of their greatness. On the contrary, with their ever-
growing greatness, they become more and more humble, modest and
unassuming. They understand the worth of the human life, its
limitations, its temporary nature and also its ephemeral role. They
discover the real value of human life and become more humane, tender,
kind, compassionate and sympathetic with the human beings.
Some boastful people and great egoistic persons, however, think
that they are the most eminent, great and noble personalities. Such
persons are always after name, fame and power. They aspire to become
famous amongst the contemporary persons and wish that their names
be noted as renowned, honourable and illustrious in history. They do all
possible tricks to publicize their names and make a record of the same

for posterity. However, when they realise and understand the startling
reality of human life, its temporal, mundane transitory nature, they
ultimately become modest, unpretending, unassuming and humble.
Once there was a very brave, courageous and ambitious king named
'Bharat' in India. At that time, there were many small kingdoms around
his empire. Bharat wanted to bring them all under his rule. He had a very
strong army. He, therefore, decided to conquer those small kingdoms
one after the other. As per his plan, he attacked the kingdoms one by
one, conquering them all and brought all those small kingdoms under
his rule. He thus became a 'Chakravarti' i.e., a great emperor of India. As
he became the supreme king and a supreme ruler, he became arrogant,
boastful and egoistic. He desired to carve his name on the rocks and
mountains so that the historians can note his greatness and write about
him in the books of history for posterity.
In those days the Rishabhakuta mountain was famous for carving
the names of Chakravarti Kings, the great emperors. Chakravarti Bharat
thought of carving his name as a 'Chakravarti' on the same rock of
Rishibhakuta Parvat. He took 'Kakini Ratna' which can work as precious
chisel and went up the mountain. When he went on the rock, he became
nervous to see that it was already full of many names of Chakravarti
kings. There was no proper place available for Bharat to carve his name
there. He got one idea. He thought of scratching one name and putting
his name there. He took Kakini Ratna and started scratching one name.
Suddenly a thought came to his mind that in future, somebody else may
come here and scratch out my name also. With this he became pensiv
and realised the temporary, transitory, and temporal nature of human
life including name and fame; put his head down and went back to his
royal house in despair.

HEALTHY MOTHER BEGETS A HEALTHY CHILD

“Out of relations that we make in our journey of life till our last
breath, the relation with your MOTHER is 9 months MORE” and these 9
months is the most crucial phase. Every month marks a new milestone
in the fetus growth which MUST be supported with adequate nourishment
by the MOTHER TO BE. So let’s explore the Tantra and Mantra of
‘RIGHT NUTRITION AT THE RIGHT TIME’ by the MOTHER TO BE.
M Manage the Calorie Intake: Energy requirement increases
during pregnancy to support the growing placenta, fetus and the
increased BMR of the mother. ICMR recommends additional 300 kcal per
day. This is equivalent to 1 big glass of milk+ 1 whole fruit+ 1 fistful of
nuts/ 3 chapatis + 1 bowl of pulses+ 1 whole fruit. The source of these
additional 300kcal is equally important as these calories MUST provide
NUTRITION as well. Even 1 vada pav provides 300 kcal but that is not the
rationale way of supporting the nutrition requirement. RIGHT CHOICE is
what the mother must rationalize while she eats
O Optimum Protein Intake: Proteins are the building blocks of our
body. The amino acids in the proteins are in demand by the fetus for its
growth and repair. The aminotic fluid that surrounds the fetus is also a
protein derivative. The maternal increase in blood volume also craves for
proteins. ICMR recommends additional 15gm protein per day. This is
equivalent to 2 glasses of milk+ 2 bowl of curds/1 big glass of milk +

4-5 small pieces of paneer or 1 slice cheese/non-veg source: egg/ fish:

3 times a week.
T Thrive on Vitamins: It’s a very tricky situation as mother and
fetus both compete for certain vitamins and fetus is given more priority
at the expense of the mother, in case of any deficiencies. The vitamins
of vital importance in this situation are: Vitamin A, C, D, and B complex
and Folic Acid. Every vitamin has its unique role to play and so
deficiencies are dangerous. To suffice the additional load incorporate
3-4 bowls of vegetables per day, out of which one must be a green leafy
vegetable, one a seasonal vegetable and one as salads/ soups before or
with the meal. Try to use cooking measures that preserve most of the
vitamins: like pressure cook the vegetables/ do not discard the water in
which they are cooked/eat raw. Folic acid which is specially required for
the neural growth comes from green leafy vegetable, pulses, soybeans,
til seeds, egg and liver.
H Harbor on Minerals: The minerals that ensure importance
during the 9 months are: Iron, Calcium, Zinc and Selenium. ICMR
recommends additional 8 gm iron per day to produce Hemoglobin and
it is also required to build the fetal iron stores. Fishes, liver, mutton,
green leafy vegetables, pulses, ragi, nuts and oil seeds (esp.: garden cress
seeds) are iron rich sources. Indulge in 6-7 almonds/ walnuts/ one
garden cress seed ladoo/ 3 medium pieces of til chikki/ 1 big bowl of
green leafy vegetables.
ICMR recommends additional 600mg calcium per day to bless the
child with healthy bone and teeth. So a mother must nourish herself
with dairy products, fishes, bajra, ragi, til seeds and greens which are
enriched sources of calcium. If the mother fails to take these, the
deficiencies are compensated by drawing calcium from the mother’s
bones and thereby leading her to be at a risk of osteoporosis. Zinc &
Selenium are required for the CNs development which comes from nuts
and oilseeds.
THOUGH THE DIETARY SOURCES OF THE VITAMINS & MINBERALS

MUST BE A PART OF THE ROUTINE EATING HABITS BUT MUST ALSO BE

PRESCRIBED IN THE FORM OF A SUPPLEMENTARY MEDICINE.
E Envy all Addictives: Alcohol and smoking are toxins for the
growing fetus and so is tabooed for pregnant women. Caffeine intake
must be to bare minimum. Instead, pamper yourself with healthy fluids
like fresh juices, lime water, buttermilk, lassi, milkshakes and more…
R Rationalise the Cravings and Aversions: Flirt with your aversions
and cravings just as they flirt with you. There are some unavoidable
situations that a pregnant woman undergoes and the best way to handle
them is your RATIONALE.
T Target a Good Active Day: An active happy day full of positivity
and cheer allows the fetus to grow in a lively environment. Listen to
soothing music, read good books, talk to your baby, go for a walk in good
breeze and ensure that you enjoy this special phase. An active
pregnancy phase also ensures a normal partum.
O Observe: Be a sharp observer and keep regular check, follow ups
with your doctor. Do not hesitate to ask whenever in doubt.
B Breast Feed: Breast feed the child exclusively for 6 months as it
is the best nourishment the child can get. It’s the best way of giving the
child what his body needs.

Educational Visit to Hospital

E
Parita Chheda
(46th YTTC, Dadar. Mob. : 9920944432)

The human body is an amazing thing. For each one of us, it’s the
most intimate object we know. And yet most of us don’t know enough
about it: its features, structures, functions, quirks, and mysteries. Think
of it as a mini digital encyclopedia with a dose of wow which if not kept
active and cared for result in various issue affecting all-round health. For
the benefit of all and as students of Yogabhyas, to understand the
Human Anatomy & Physiology, the normal parameters that govern these
beautiful systems is of utmost importance. Therefore, Yoga Vidya
Niketan took us students of the 42nd batch to the esteemed Grant
Medical College & Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals.
The curiosity levels were at its peak when we entered the
Department of Anatomy. The body parts were meticulously divided into
various sections - The head and its parts, the vertebral column, the three
large cavities, viz. thoracic, abdominal and pelvic with the viscera in
each, the specimens of the different foetal developmental stages, the
rare deformities in each, so on and so forth. What a wonder this system
crossed a thought while we observed each of those parts and tried to
recollect what was taught in class. Amazed, fascinated and absolutely
enchanted by this brilliant mechanism created by God, we learnt how to
respect our bodies, also called the temple of God, furthermore.
After viewing the various parts of the body and a break for
refreshments, we headed to the Department of Forensics which is also
known as the ‘Chirfad Department’. Dr. Chikhalkar briefed us about the
other aspects of medicine and that took us to another important aspect
of Forensics. He very well touched upon the amalgamation of Yoga with

Medicine and how Yogic Therapy has become beneficial in today’s times.
He emphasised on the fact that there’s Life beyond dissections, Dharana
Dhyana and Samadhi which should be the ultimate aim of a person’s life.
He congratulated us all for having selected ‘Yoga’ as our Way of Life and
said that death is inevitable and added saying in Marathi, “nantar smriti
rupe bhetnar”.. which means later we all shall become a beautiful
memory to each other and nothing else.
Dr. Chikhalkar said, “Dead do tell tales, they never talk lies”. With
raised eyebrows and sheer astonishment, we were eager to know what
else doctor had to share. He further said, the dead body tells us who
killed me, which weapon was used and when; whether the body was
sexually assaulted or not, tortured in police custody or not, thrown in
the river, etc. All these examinations dig out the unsaid truth.
He gave an overview of a Yogi’s life which was energised with an
interplay of psychosomatic asanas and the surreal pranayamas which
helped train the kapicitta, i.e. the monkey mind making it calm and fit
for this journey called life. This practical knowledge of the human body
parts makes one teach yogabhyas more efficiently, keeping normal
parameters in mind. The asanas like Sulabha Matsyendrasana help in
improving the efficiency of the pancreas, hence regulating Insulin levels,
regular practice of which can help keep diabetes at bay. Doctor further
pointed out that we must eat right, remember the importance of Aahaar,
and not fall prey to the generation next perils like ordering online food
items on Uber Eats, Zomato etc. He said we must use platforms like
WhatsApp not for ‘vivad’ but rather for ‘sanvad’ and promote health,
giving mental health utmost priority. In the new age today, following the
Western culture we Indians have forgotten our roots. Live-in
relationships, divorces and suicide rates have increased all due to mental
disturbances, negativity and depression.
Whilst we sat there in the forensics department, a question crossed
my inquisitive mind. I went ahead and raised my hand to ask the doctor,
during his tenure in the department, could he share his experience of

Yoga Varta : April 2019 26

`moJdmVm©

any post mortems done of a Yogi, wherein he could differentiate distinct

changes in the body type of the Yogi versus any lay man. To which,
Dr. Chikalkar, paused, his lips breaking into a wrinkle, said in a calm,
contented tone that yes he was fortunate to witness a couple of
instances where doctors examined a yogi’s body. He shared a few
examples. The first of Swami Vidnyananda, who took Surya Samadhi by
jumping into the river. As it was an unnatural death, after around 12
hours post documentation and legal formalities, the body was received
for post mortem. The classroom was filled with a wave of intrigue and
undivided attention to what next doc had to say. Dr. Chikalkar, raising his
eyebrows and clearing his throat said that usually dead bodies begin to
decay immediately, but to his amazement his dead body was warm,
wasn’t of a 70 year old man - was much younger and healthy.
The second example shared was that of a Bhante, the polite particle
used to refer the buddhist monks. Bhante literally means, ‘Venerable
Sir’. His body arrived with a lot of questions regarding his death. Some
said he had been killed whilst other party members argued to say that
he had committed suicide. After post mortem and keen observations,
the team investigating noticed healthy body, no injury, no pathological
changes, only traces of a small wound near the toe, which after
histological tests was confirmed to be a circular, one caused due to
earthing. It was the exit wound for the electric current that passed it. Dr.
Chikalkar said, “Prana sodtana, any one part it may have exited from and
here it went through the toe, whose differentiating point was the circular
wound.’’
The third example was that of Swami Ramdas. He was a noted 17th
century saint and spiritual poet of Maharastra. He was revered by
Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Swamiji had no other wishes and
attachments in life except for one. He loved ‘kheer’ and could not stay
without it. One day, this bitter truth bothered him. Troubled Swamiji
thought, being a Yogi why wasn’t he able to control his wish for kheer
and be content without any wishes in life? To get rid of this, Swamiji ate

27 Yoga Varta : April 2019

`moJdmVm©

kheer till he felt filled to the brim and then performed vamana, forceful
vomiting till the entire kheer was out. Later, he ate the vomit till his
‘vasana’, a term in Indian philosophy which means longing for,
expectation or desire for kheer in this case, died. After which, Dr.
exclaimed, “Rhunadab zhala” and he passed away.
We were transported to another world. The world of a Yogi who
engages in a definite, step-by-step procedure by which the body and
mind are disciplined, and the soul liberated. In the most well-known
Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, it says, “The true renunciate and the
true Yogi are those who perform dutiful actions without desiring their
fruits, not those who, eschewing self-offering, act with ego-motivation,
nor those who (in the name of renunciation) eschew action.”
According to Swami Kriyananda, the difference between a Yogi and
an average person is that the Yogi accepts with equanimity whatever is.
To a Yogi, all things and all creatures are just plays of divine light and
shadow. They react appropriately, but in their heart they see everything
as aspects of the eternal drama of the Divine.
Engrossed into Dr. Chikalkar’s talk, I thought to myself about the joy
of being a Yogi, the content of simple living, the need of having a
detached life and thanking the universe for this gift which I had made my
way of life. Later, we saw some live specimens of the skull, body parts
and foetus. Understood the breathing process as doc showed us the
amazing bucket and pump handle mechanism of the respiratory system,
leaving us all awestruck.
As the sun shone right above us and there came noon, we dispersed
ending yet another interesting day of our lives. We were extremely lucky
and the privileged few to have had this novel experience which wouldn’t
have been possible without our Guruji, Padmashree Yogacharya Shri
Sadashiv Nimbalkarji, members and teachers of the Yoga Vidya Niketan
fraternity. Eternally grateful and happy to be a part of this beloved
YoViNi parivaar!

9th International Conference -

Yoga As Therapy (Part 2)
E
Nitin Tawde
(YVN’s Yoga & Naturo-Therapist, Vashi.Mob. : 9819186655)

All of us know that Yoga is a systematic

journey towards self-realisation and during this
process one is spontaneously benefitted with good
physical and mental health. These same benefits
are therefore put into therapeutic practices. Thus a
daily regime or Yogic Dinacharya of proper Yogic
practices is, therefore, useful for self-healing and
well-being. Physical wellness provides strength and
stamina but mental and spiritual wellness is the one that provides
healing through Yoga. Therapeutic effects are achieved through a
relaxation response that activates body’s parasympathetic nervous
system which calms down mind and body, helps digestion, causes slower
heart rate, reduces blood pressure and also results in slow and steady
respiration, improved vital capacity and long breath holding power. This,
in particular, is extremely important because general perception of Yoga
is confined only to Asana and when someone starts speaking about Yoga,
the first thing that a common person visualises is difficult looking
physical postures. Relatively less understood by common people is the
importance of Pranayama. Understanding right technique of Pranayama
is immensely important in therapeutic use for many disorders and
ailments in application of Yoga Therapy. Fundamental principle of
Pranayama is correct technique of regulation of breath. Breathing is
involuntary, hence one fails to understand importance of it. It is
immensely important to be conscious about breathing all the time.

29 Yoga Varta : April 2019

`moJdmVm©

Pranayama makes us aware of breathing through regulation of breath.

First and foremost thing to be learned in Pranayama is that the
exhalation has to be longer than inhalation. For better understanding of
this it is necessary to know functioning of lungs. Normally, the total lung
capacity is about 5.5 to 6 litres with 1.5 litres of residual volume which
gives our lungs about 4 to 4.5 litres of vital capacity but typical tidal
volume (i.e. volume of air displaced during normal breathing without
any extra efforts) is only 0.5 litres. Thus, there remains about 3.5 to 4
litres of carbon dioxide and other toxic gases in lungs. Therefore as
mentioned earlier, one can remove this toxic carbon dioxide by
prolonged exhalations through Pranayama and can bring more oxygen in
lungs for the tissues. This oxygen then combines with glucose to release
energy for body. This aerobic glycolysis produces energy that acts as
disease fighting agent. On the contrary, when oxygen is not adequate
the glucose metabolism goes through anaerobic glycolysis to produce
lactic acid and pain producing substances related to diseases. Remember
that inhalation is sympathetic and exhalation is parasympathetic and by
prolonging exhalation more than inhalation, the parasympathetic nerve
activation takes place calming down mind and body. Moreover,
regulation of breath slows down breathing rate. Normally human breath
rate is 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Slowing down breath rate helps
calming down the mind. This slower breathing helps in slowing down the
heart rate. When heart starts beating slow, the resting time of heart i.e.
diastole is more. As we know well that heart muscles receive purified
blood only during diastole phase and with sufficient supply of pure blood
the heart muscles remain well functional. Thus it is very important to
know this functionality of heart and how Pranayama practice helps
keeping us healthy. Without understanding this important effect of
Pranayama, it will remain only a ritualistic breathing. Hence, experts
stressed upon this beautiful explanation of Pranayama breathing
techniques and its therapeutic use in treatment of various disorders.
A beautiful analogy for body, mind and spirit in cyber language

Yoga Varta : April 2019 30

`moJdmVm©

terminology was given where body is the hardware, mind is the software
and spirit is the programmer. Mind (software) controls the physical body
(hardware) and with Yogic lifestyle one can control physical body and its
ailments. Maintaining Yogic balance between body, mind and spirit and
by uniting them, one achieves health. Western Medicine defines health
as absence of dis-ease whereas Yoga defines dis-ease as absence of good
health. Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to
progress towards improved health and well-being through application of
philosophy and practice of Yoga. Benefits of Yoga are seen even at the
cellular level. The endocrine system is maintaining the homeostasis
where the Pituitary gland – the master gland – is fixing the abnormalities
by correcting the altered hormonal homeostasis. Every cell in human
body contains infinite wealth of intelligence, discipline and
consciousness and in diseased state this functions are altered. Here Yoga
helps by bringing back cell functions by influencing Endocrinal glandular
system and it is seen that even the diseases like cancer can be cured by
bringing back the intelligence, discipline and consciousness to the
cancerous cells. Most chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and
cardiovascular disorders have genetic predisposition. Diseases manifest
when this genetic predisposition is converted to genetic expression
through one’s lifestyle choices (epigenetics) and this is completely within
one’s control. Therefore, it can be called that genetic predisposition is
like a ‘loaded gun’ for these chronic diseases and ‘trigger’ of gun is one’s
lifestyle choice. This is how exactly the primary prevention of diseases
work by adaptation of Yoga as lifestyle.
Another point of debate was that Yoga Therapy needs to be
standardised. Many medical professionals still do not believe and are
not yet ready to accept Yoga as Therapy. Reason put forward is that it is
not a science and can’t be standardised. Hence they are not prepared to
acknowledge Yoga Therapy as science. In this argument they miss out
the important point that Yoga Therapy is not evidence based medicine
but rather a practice-based evidence. It requires personalized lifestyle

31 Yoga Varta : April 2019

`moJdmVm©

changes and therefore, there cannot be a standardized Yogic practice for

one and all. Another argument is made that there exists no diagnostic
tools in Yoga Therapy. However, the most important fact about Yoga
Therapy which is overlooked is that it is not at all treating any disease or
ailment but treats every individual as a whole and considers well-being
of person at physical, mental, social and spiritual level with healthy
lifestyle to keep diseases away. Observance of Yama, Niyama as stated
by Maharshi Patanjali helps in disciplining life and stabilising mind thus
keeping many psychosomatic disorders away. So the question of using
diagnostic tools becomes irrelevant and if at all any diagnosis is
necessary then it can be resolved taking help of modern diagnostic tools
available. Modern medical treatments are based on ‘symptoms’ of
diseases and therefore, medicines and medication treat only the
symptoms and not the root cause. Therefore, medicines are prescribed
for the disease and active emotional involvement of patients is not
required; whereas in Yoga Therapy, treatment is not based on any
consideration of disease but there is an emphasis on overall well-being
of an individual. In Yoga Therapy mental, emotional involvement of
patient is taken into account whereby healing is very effective and faster.
Modern medical science treats the gross physical body but Yoga
treatment is not only restricted to physical body but considers subtle
mind and also considers spiritual aspects to subtlest level considering
Pancha Koshas - five sheaths of human body. Yoga is an experiential
science and to understand it one has to first experience it oneself by
practising before doubting the various benefits of Asana, Pranayama and
Dhyana.
An important study for healing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
with Kundalini Yoga and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) was
presented during one of the sessions. PTSD is body-mind illness
developed as an aftermath of many kinds of traumatic events such as
natural disasters, sexual assault, military combat, etc. The recurring
memories of traumatic incident includes nightmares, flashbacks,

exaggerated negative feelings and beliefs about oneself, others and

world, hyper vigilance, physical tension and disturbed sleep. Body and
mind are never separate and when one thinks about a stressful thought
or has distressing memory, the body and mind together participate in
such activity. When such traumatic memory comes in mind, the body
too shivers violently. It was observed that such disorders were treated
using Mantra, a key component of Kundalini practice which lowered
down depression symptoms, reduced high BP, improved mental health,
etc. In short, Yoga encompasses every aspect of life and helps correct
and cure any disorder.
The world is facing a crisis in healthcare. Today America has one of
the highest rates of suicide, mental illness and other serious social
problems and here in India also the situation is not much different. This
is what the industrialization and modern medicines – Allopathy has given
us in last two centuries. Philosophy of Allopathy is ‘find it and fix it’ and
it has forgotten what Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine,
believed in, ‘the healing power of the nature’. He has stated “Our food
should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food”. He has
further stressed upon the importance of gut and said “all diseases begin
in the gut”. Drugs can save lives in crisis or physical injuries but they
cannot be answer for every cure. In fact drugs are lethal chemicals given
in non-lethal doses and they all have their side effects. According to
Journal of American Medical Association, side effect to drug
prescriptions is one of the leading causes of death in USA and millions
require hospitalisation due to adverse drug reactions. Every year millions
of pounds of aspirin are consumed and billions of dollars are spent on
tranquilizers. This certainly is not a good sign of lifestyle. In contrast it
must be noted that in Garhwal mountains there exist communities
where there are no doctors, hospitals or modern software technological
hardware and many people have lifespan of hundred or more years.
They are living happily without psychologists, social workers and
policemen. Therefore, it raises a question whether to lead a happy and

healthy life do we need so many material things? Holistic Health

philosophy of Himalayan sages says that cause and cure of all diseases
lie within body. A human body is a nature’s miracle. Majority of times
body can heal itself if left alone because it is the most evolved system in
the universe. Holistic health is more than physical or mental fitness; it is
a state where one understands the purpose of life. By taking proper care
of our bodies, through healthy holistic Satvik diet, regular practice of
Asana, Pranayama and Dhyana for inner balance to control emotions
and thus achieving everlasting peace should be the objective of life.
An interesting aspect of integration of evidence based Yoga with
Western Medicine was brought forward during the conference by Dr
Arthur Brownstein from USA who has studied Yoga from Kaivalyadhama
during his student days and has worked as associate of world fame Dr
Dean Ornish for over a decade. When he chose to come to India to learn
Yoga as a part of his higher study program, question was raised “What
Yoga have to do with mainstream modern western medicine?” Even
today the same question is raised by many healthcare professionals in
the west.
In 1988, at the 61st Scientific Sessions of the American Heart
Association held in Washington DC, Dr Dean Ornish presented his
findings to the world proving that heart disease, the number one killer
in the world could be reversed without drugs or surgery with the help of
Yoga. Dr Dean’s historical presentation had all kinds of medical evidences
that modern scientific research may demand. Obviously the
distinguished cardiologists in the audience were not convinced and were
outraged. It was a ‘tight slap in face’ of conventional western medicine
and for the esteemed cardiologists who heavily relied exclusively on the
drugs and surgery to treat patients of heart disease. All other scientific
studies at that time supported that cause of heart disease were
genetically inherited and not related to diet or lifestyle. For them it was
foolish to believe that learning to stand on one’s head and eating
vegetables could prolong life. Reversing heart disease was a farfetched

`moJdmVm©

goal. Next day in a press conference Dr Ornish published his views and
to the world it was announced that “Yoga and vegetarian diet reverses
heart disease”. Thereafter for next 30 years till date, Dean Ornish
Institute has been researching in this field and has treated hundreds and
thousands of terminally ill patients by successfully reversing their
disorders by empowering them with Yogic lifestyle and Yogic practices.
When this conference began we all were excited and wondering
what would be there for us for the next three days to take away from
this conference? Sincerely the next three days were really a treat for
everyone as all the lecturers were exponents in the field of Yoga and it
can easily be seen from the summary we have tried to present here.
Although it wasn’t possible for one to attend all presentations but,
whatever we could gather had been so fascinating that we would appeal
one and all, not to miss such excellent opportunities anytime in the
future.
One of the most important messages this Conference conveyed is
that although Yoga as Therapy is for gross physical body, the therapeutic
treatments do not merely treat the physical body but they have subtler
effect on mental as well as spiritual well-being too. In this context
statement of Dr. Dean Ornish sums it up well -
‘The physical heart is a metaphor for the spiritual heart’.

A Great Yoga Teacher
Shri K. Ramanathan breathed his last
Feeling extremely sad to announce that Shri K.
Ramanathan (DOB : 2nd January 1934), a very senior
and self-disciplined Yoga Teacher having exemplary
devotion towards accomplishing YVN’s Motto : ‘Yoga
Vidya In Every Home’ breathed his last on the evening of
11th March 2019 at the age of 85 years. Possessing
M.I.E. (India), D.B.M. as educational qualifications,
Shri Ramanathan had completed Yoga Vidya Niketan’s
10th YTTC i.e. Yoga Teachers Training Course (1986-
87) and Yoga Therapy Course (1999-2000), apart from
acquiring Diploma in Yoga and Philosophy from
Mumbai University in year 2002. Immediately after completing YTTC, he
rendered valuable services as a member of Yoga Faculty at YTTC, Dadar for
4 years (1987-1991). Thereafter, he was attached as Yoga Teacher in-charge
of morning batch (5.30 to 8) of Damle Yoga Kendra, Matunga (W) for last
around 28 years. Shri Ramanathan was present in his morning yoga class even
on that fateful day i.e. 11th March 2019. It was really a very sad day for
Damle Yoga Kendra, in particular and the entire YVN Parivar, in general.
On behalf of Yovini Parivar, let us expresss heartfelt condolences and pray
Almighty – Let his soul rest in eternal peace!!!

CONDOLENCES
q Gautam Chokshi & Gutka-Milind-Savla
(Yoga Teachers, Damle Yoga Kendra)
It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing away of
Ramanathan sir on 11th March 2019.
We in Damle Yog Kendra who have known him closely, are still trying
to come to terms with this sad, tragic news. We had known sir for the
last 15 years due to our long association with him at the centre.
Sir was a strong personality, always very disciplined and determined.
He was a great teacher, counsellor, and a support system to all our

sadhakas. We teachers too have benefitted supremely from his patience,
calmness and punctuality. He was always an approachable to one and
all. We have lost a great mentor, a wonderful person, and a dear friend.
We miss you, sir!
Rest in peace sir!
q Swati Chokshi (Yoga Teacher, Damle Yoga Kendra)
Reminiscing about Ramanathan sir takes me 14 years back-in the
year 2005. After being denied admission into the Damle Yoga Centre a
couple of times, is when I met sir for the first time.(Each time I was told
'no vacancy'). Sir was extremely particular about the number of
sadhakas practising at one time. His top priority was the comfort, space
and due attention by the teacher for every sadhaka.
He was punctual, disciplined and extremely attentive in class. This
forced us fellow teachers and sadhakas to imbibe these qualities in
ourselves .Anybody found chatting during the yoga sessions was frowned
upon. A sadhaka’s uninformed absence was promptly remembered and
discouraged with sweet taunts. "AW `moJmZwemgZ_²&' was in his blood
He had all the qualities of a good teacher. He was gentle,
affectionate, a great listener and a comforting counsellor. Anyone could
confide in him easily. He not only spent couple of entire sessions with a
new student, but was also concerned about the reason of joining the
class, thus bringing in a personal touch towards teaching.
He always encouraged sadhakas to seek knowledge by attending
workshops, conferences and camps on different yogic subjects. He liked
to share new and different experiences and accepted the same, if
needed. Thus knowing and observing a sadhaka keenly, the enthusiastic
ones were recommended to pursue the teachers’ training course, me
being the perfect example. Throughout the course, he encouraged and
pushed me towards excellence.
Sir himself was a well read person. If confronted with some doubt,
he would even go to the extent of referring to books and discuss the
matter openly and in detail. His personal collection of books too was
open for us to refer.

`moJdmVm©

Along with Yoga, he taught me to lead a complete life. He strongly

encouraged positive thinking, meditation and building up a strong
determination. Another aspect he tried infusing in me was to ‘learn to
say No’
Very little is known about his personal life. In my association with him
for 14 years, I had learnt that his day began at 3.30 am and that he led
an extremely disciplined lifestyle. Attending yoga classes regularly was
always his primary agenda. Residing at Matunga-East, he initially walked
to class, then via train by changing two railway lines and eventually by
taxi. Nothing could stop him from attending classes at the ripe age of 85.
I think that is what kept him alive and always smiling; till the last breath.
He was the Master of Masters and Guru of Gurus in my sight. My
write up won't be over till I can quote the following..

We, at Damle Yoga Kendra (Morning Batch) are still to come out
of shock of demise of Mr. Ramanathan sir, our beloved Organiser.
On 11th March 2019, we celebrated International Women's Day in
the class, when he was personally insisting all students to take the
snaks before leaving the class. And in the evening, we got this
shocking news. Somehow we are consoling ourselves and trying to
come out of this terrible shock.
Trained under the able guidence of respected Nimbalkar Guruji,
Shri Ramanathan sir was a staunch promoter of Yoga, self-disciplined
and ever helpful person as he was. A friend, guide and philosopher for
all of us teachers and students alike. A bachelor and healthy till end,
he followed all the teachings of Yoga and made us follow them as
taught by our Nimbalkar Guruji.
All in all, we have lost a gem of a person, very dear and near to
us. An appropriate Shradhanjali to him will be -

After joining in 2015, I have found a tremendous change in myself
under the quidance of Ramanathan Sir, who is unfortunately no more
physically. I was shocked to hear about his sad demise on 11th March
2019. He has been a real source of inspiration and has been a real
Guru and a true Mentor who has guided us on anything and
everything. He has cultivated a sence of discipline amongst us all. He
always guided in practising Asanas, Meditation, etc. and was always
ready to give guidance on any of my personal matters too. I used to
always receive whatsapp messages from him on regular basis which
gave lot of inspiration, pure thoughts and positivity. He was indeed a
TRUE FRIEND, PHILOSOPHER & GUIDE. I can always feel his
presence in our class for ever!
