Coronation Eve
It won?t be quick. Will walls be built? Deportations? Violence and hate
continues to spread. Is it a response, or a reaction? A small minority, or a
vast majority?
Our revolution will not be quick either.

Facts:
Academics lean towards the left.
Boarding school faculty are incredibly well-educated- graduating from
prestigious colleges and universities, often with one or more graduate
degrees.
Boarding school constituents (students, alumni, parents, donors) lean
towards the right.
EVERYBODY IS LOOKING IN THE SHADOWS. THE PLACE TO BE IS IN THE SUN.
(Heist by David Mamet, paraphrased).

We are in the sun, on the beaches, hitting the slopes. We don?t need to
hide, but you will never find us.

The world is my oyster, but I?m gonna give it a pearl necklace.

?Only @iamdiddy should wear white after labor day?

Gay Pedro tweeted.

Today, all those who wore white yesterday, look devastated. Mlle. just
sat at her table in the dining hall, crying. Faculty shambled around like
zombies, shaking their heads.
Not everyone of course.
Not all the faculty wore white yesterday.
How many voted for Him? Or should I say, rather, not Her? I am fairly
certain the pothead who couldn?t name a single world leader he
admired pulled in some votes.
The term blue-blooded might as well refer to how we vote as a state.
However, all one has to do is head out of town to find yard signs for
Him.

SJW is thrown around as an insult, as is Progressive.

What would the opposite of these ideas be?

Social InJustice Warrior. That is fucked up.

And the opposite of Progressive would be Regressive.

So, fighting for social justice is bad, and people want to regress as a
society?

I wish I had the words to say this more eloquently, and throw together
a snippy article for the New Yorker, instead, seriously, what the fuck?

So, guess who got the spend the day with Mr. C, Head of
Maintenance? This guy posting with two thumbs.
Guess who missed the second Mountain Day of the term?
Guess which school had two Mountain Days this year?
Mountain Day is a presumably primarily New England tradition where
schools get a surprise day off in the fall term. It is mostly colleges, but
many preparatory schools embrace it as well. We already had ours.
We are in the final week of fall term, so it?s pretty obvious why we are
having one now. And it?s a rainy, cold day too, so no one is hiking.
It isn?t even fair to say that many of the faculty have been running on
autopilot, that would be an insult to autopilots everywhere. Today was
only a half day of classes anyway, potentially only one exa would
need to be rescheduled, and some teachers have already just said
fuck it.
Mountain Day for students usually involves a lot of day drinking: ?It?s
after noon somewhere? is repeated ad nauseam until it actually is
noon.
I am pretty sure faculty does the same.
At least today they are. Drowning their sorrows in local craft beers and
calling their congressmen. Because our representatives want Him in
office. Were you not paying attention where I mentioned we are a very
blue state. Do you think the rep from some state that ran a literal
member of the Klan for Congress gives a shit? Those are the folks
that should be called, but, newsflash, we don?t live in one of those
states.
My sister, who is finishing up her final year of college told me at
W------ they literally canceled a day of classes and offered up play-doh
and coloring books for students. So, what am I doing with Mr. C?
In-school suspension.
A lot of us have overheard him joke with faculty he wanted to see
America great again.
Do I think he is a racist?
Not at all. He has been known to board kids at his house if they need
a place to stay, he bitches about us ?fucking spoiled kids? but he
always has our backs. Today we actually dragged a couple kids who
passed out back to their rooms. He won?t say a thing to the
administration. He gets it.
I am certain he isn?t a racist.
Why was I suspended?
Allow me to paint the picture from yesterday:
You would have thought they were drunk, but they were just being
assholes.
Chas wrapped his arm around Jose, he was dining hall staff, and
loudly declared "we are sincerely going to miss you Jojo, Taco
Tuesday will not be the same and your huevos for weekend brunch
are the best. But the wall is coming mi hermano."
Parker was just babbling on about having to find a new housekeeper
and would the Indian place in town deliver.
Bo yelled out "MAKE TACOS GREAT AGAIN!" This elicited many
laughs and several chants of "Build a wall!"
Bo had had his typical, lazy shit eating grin and didn?t see me when I
rushed him from behind, knocked him hard into a table, and slammed
his head down. Blood everywhere, he definitely broke his nose. Chas
grabbed me as the crowd started cheering. A couple teachers quickly
jumped in and roughly escorted me from the dining hall.
Now, you want to know why I did it? I don?t know.

difficult, and how nice would it be for the new guy to say something

Oh, and someone got butt-hurt when a Broadway cast made a stand.
Safe space, suck my dick.
A fucking park should be a safe space, kids should not have to deal
with that shit. An elected public official should not get their
tighty-whities in a bunch because some theater actors take a stand.

Max asked me to hang out for a couple days during Thanksgiving

break. He wasn?t going home: he had to pay for his own flight and he
didn?t really want to have to deal with his family.
?I love them, they are good people, but I know they are red-blooded
through and through, not a drop of blue in them, and I just can?t
stomach that for a week.?
Max is from a small town in North Dakota. A town that has seen much
better days. Max?s father hasn?t had a steady job for several years,
and there?s smack junkies everywhere. Plus, it?s cold as fuck.
Max does dig the cold though.
Max was 13 when he applied. He was a big fan of Dead Poet?s Society,
and took a bunch of other books out of the library. Prep gave him the
idea to apply. So, he applied. When he was accepted, they obviously
gave him a full ride, and his parents were okay with the whole thing,
after Max explained they wouldn?t have to pay anything. I would
speculate they might have thought it would save them money, not
having to put food on the table for Max or getting him around to
hockey. But, I would bet they don?t now have a nice nest egg of
money to fall back on. People spend what they have.
Anyway, Max explained he would pay for anything that needed to be
paid for: books, clothes, and in this case, plane fare back and forth.
?Plus, I will have to go home over Christmas, so why not hang here??
Here. School. I offered to bring Max home with me, but he wanted to
stay. The school lets kids stay if they want, it?s kind of unofficial, but if
you?re traveling halfway across the globe and have to return a week
later, that fucks up your internal clock. So, school remains open, sort
of. Staff is still around until Weds, so the dining hall is open, and most
kids make arrangements with day students, and faculty sometimes
offer up Thanksgiving and all the fixings.
A couple years ago, Mrs. L was Dean of Faculty and taught a couple
Classics classes. And then she wasn?t Dean anymore. And her
classes were taught by the Classics teaching fellow. Super awkward
because she still lives on campus with Mr. L, and he still teaches, and
coaches and is on-dorm. Rumor has it she was fucking one of the
students. The more specific rumor is that she and Max were fucking.
So, when Max told me he was gonna hang with the L?s, I didn?t say a
word. Not my business.
I told my folks I was doing a service thing, they wouldn?t ask for
specifics, they were just happy I was giving back. Service is a big
thing. Independent school buzzword. It?s all bullshit, of course. The
service is bullshit. Usually we head off to spend time with people less
fortunate, take some pictures and get back on the bus as quickly as
possible. To get home, I?d catch the bus from the store in town on
Monday. I likely wouldn?t see my sister Ashley until Monday anyway,
and I thought it?d be fun to spend some time with Max.
One of the worst kept secrets here is Max.
Max is a stud on the ice, not leading scorer or anything, but he makes
it look easy. He?s been on skates since he could walk, you know that
old story. Max has a single. It?s not uncommon. He always has. And,
I?ll be honest, zero percent of my motivation to stay had to do with
learning the truth.
We were buzzing pretty hard on our Sizzurp- cough syrup, splash of
vodka, and some sort of hard candy. Max is close enough to the
Canadian border he can get the better cough syrup. Codeine better.
Thanks Canada.
We were lying on his bed, you could say cuddling, I guess. I?m
affectionate like that.
?I need the D B-Rock.?
?Wha?? He playfully reached down my pants
?The D, don?t be a bitch, give up the D!?
Let me just pause the scene here, understand first that I would best
be characterized as fluid. So, the idea of me hooking up with a guy
should not be the cause for the pause.
The worst kept secret about Max is that he was born a she. Or, rather,
that he has lady-parts.
Unpause scene for a moment: he sat up. reached under his shirt, and
took off his binder. ?I know most people know, and, frankly B, I?m
feeling a bit horny, could be all the Sizzurp. I don?t want to make you
uncomfortable.? when he finished unwrapping he lied back down, back
turned to me. I rolled over and wrapped my arm around him.
?No, it?s not? ? I?ll admit, I was stammering a bit, trying to find the
not-wrong words.
?Surprised?? I let out a small grunt of acknowledgement. ?It?s cool.
Here is the story, and only a couple...?
I wanted to say "it?s cool? don?t worry.? It was cool. I wouldn?t say
anything.
?When I was 10 or so, I asked my family and friends to start calling me
Max. I didn?t like Melissa much.? ?
Did you know??
?Fuck yeah, I knew. And, I thought this could be a way to transition? .
that?s a buzzword I know, and it wasn?t like I wanted to scream from
the rooftops or anything, but I wanted to be, I was Max.?
?S?a good name.?
?Thanks.? he was blushing a bit, I?d guess, but surprisingly, nothing
about him telling his story made him uncomfortable. It wasn?t matter of
fact, it was just his truth. ?So, I applied here, and I applied as Max.
Why not, right? A chance to reinvent.?
?That?s super fucking smart. When I was 13, I was all... shit, playing
Pokemon probably.?
?So was I, and my character was a boy, too.? I laughed. He was still
funny. ?So, when I say I want the D, I?m not making some grand
statement like ?I?m a gay trans-man.' I?m a man. That?s who I am. But,
I have lady parts, and I like those too. And, I?m probably bi, I guess. I
probably am more attracted to women, but I like boys too.? There was
a moment of silence, but not awkward.
?Ok? ?
?Go ahead and ask B, I?m not gonna bite. Ok, I might bite, with
consent and shit, if you want.? I think I literally snorted.
?So, like, how do you, do you date, or hookup, or anything??
?A bit.?
?How do you? ??
?How do I know? What, you?re assuming I?m not reverse Crying Game
everyone?? I guffawed at that one.
?Yeah.?
?How do you know? How does anyone know? Like, here, now: I
assumed you wouldn?t freak the fuck out. I?ve had a couple hookups
here, some boys, some girls. A couple probably didn?t know, and
that?s why they didn?t last. But, when I think of the future, I imagine I?ll
find someone who digs me, and that will be cool. It?s not nefarious.
Love will be love, right??
He showed me his go bag. Oddly, his go bag had a bra and white
panties. When he went home, he was a daughter again, and that was
ok. ?They don?t need to deal with this, it?s my issue.? I nodded. ?But, It
sucks that now, I?m angry at them. Not as individuals, but as a
collective. Sure, there?s talk that Rudy might get a cabinet position,
and he dresses in drag, so some might say I should find some comfort
in that, but, the message, rather the interpretation of the message, by
the collective, is that I?m not ok, that?s fucked to the up. So, I?m kind of
dreading, moreso than normal, going home. Binding isn?t all that
comfortable, a nice Vicky?s Secret bra is much more comfortable, and
I don?t mind, and sometimes I enjoy it, but the fact that my gut just
aches, that?s a shitty fucking feeling. And, I know I have it kind of
easy. Administration here has been great, I don?t have to deal with a
roommate jerking off at odd hours, and as much as I thought about
applying to S---- and M---- H------, I?m not a woman, so that just seems
like gaming the system. I can move about in public and not feel that
out of place. I do a pretty good job, right.? I nodded
?Yeah, you?re a guy.?
?But, I know for some folks, who might not be as flexible, and who
have an outside appearance that isn?t as chameleon-like, there will be
tons of bullshit to deal with. And that sucks. I hate that. I hate that all
that festering hatred, that the collective feels empowered. I?ve talked
with my family, and I get where they are coming from, in so many
ways. They don?t focus on the KKK endorsement and all the hate shit.
Their candidate offered them something She didn?t. And, I want to be
empathetic, and I know that none of us, no one, shares the same filter
which we view life. That?s a fact. So, they don?t see it. Or, if they do,
they would rather focus on what is important to them. Like me. Folks
see me. I?m on the boys?hockey team, I wear a jacket and tie every
day, stupid dress code, but it all serves to color how I am viewed by
the world, and I know that. I am gaming the system in a way. And,
right now, I just don?t want to deal. So, I?m staying here. And, I?ll deal
with it at Christmas, to some degree, and then I?ll come back here,
and put it behind me. But, I also know how fortunate I am. What about
the me somewhere else who didn?t figure out how to game the
system? What about the me somewhere who doesn?t want to? What
about the 10 year old who gets the shit kicked out of her for wanting to
wear a dress to school??

We all walk into American History and there is a swastika on the
whiteboard. Mr. P doesn?t say anything, he is sitting at his desk,
watching us.
Elana finally gets up and walks to the board and erases it, and puts a

You could feel the room sigh.
Mr. P gets up and erases the heart, draws a swastika and sits down.

Mr. G was pretty shaken by this whole election. Correction, Mr. G is
pretty shaken. He?s scared and angry. Mind you, he?s a white male, I?d
guess he was gay, but probably closer to ace. Comes from some
money, attended H--------, went to college up in Maine, not one of the
B ones, the C one. He?s got a total hard on for cars, has his dad?s
mustang, a pimped-out Audi, and a top-of-the-line Jetta. First day of
class back from T-Day break, American Literature, he played Blood on
the Tracks. He didn?t say anything, he had it on vinyl, and we just
listened to it. He had his eyes closed the whole time, it was obvious
he was in the moment. The next day, it was The Times They Are
A-Changing. Day 3, Morgan, who is the biggest provocateur raised
her hand. Mr. G was queueing up another whiny Dylan album.
?Mr. G, would you say that The Traveling Wilburys would be the
equivalent of Faulkner writing genre fiction??
As expected, Mr. G got pretty pissed. He did not put on the record,
and we all sat in silence for awhile.
Morgan spoke out again ?And, since the President was given a Nobel
before he actually did anything, and Kissinger got one, and I?d guess
most academics find that reprehensible, do you think it would be ok if I
submitted my candidacy? I want to change the world, I haven?t yet, but
I want to. Is that enough for the cool million? I could donate it to
charity, but how dope would it be to be a Nobel laureate??
We all understood what Mr. G was trying to do, but Morgan?s
questions were not that out of place.
?And if Jakob Dylan really wanted to not be known as the son of Bob
Dylan, why didn?t he change his name, or assume a name, like his
dad, you know Robert Zimmerman??
On Friday, Morgan showed up and didn?t say a word, she handed Mr.
G a record.
Today, we listened to It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, by Public
Enemy.
At the end of class, Morgan spoke up ?That?s your fucking Nobel
winner right there. Fight the Power!?
Mr. G is ok with us cursing in class, if it is appropriate. ?Language has
power,? he says, ?and I want you to feel empowered.?
?That?s on their next album, Fear of a Black Planet, want me to bring that
in? I don?t have it on vinyl, though.? She looked at Mr G, and he
nodded.
His eyes were bleary, but he might have even had a hint of a smile.

The idea of Saturday classes is probably alien to you, but it is pretty
standard at prep schools. We have a half day on Wednesdays, and
then sportsball, and then a half day Saturday and more sportsball.
Mr P had not been in class since Wednesday, today when we came
into class there was a Confederate flag hanging in the front of the
room.
Bo was visibly excited. He?s from Hotlanta, and claims lineage to a
certain Confederate leader.
It doesn?t take a google genius to figure out what Mr. P was doing on
Weds. the swastika did not always have Nazi connotations. But, right
now, it does, and people are painting them everywhere. Campuses
have been subject to vandalism, student groups have His name
carved into their doors.
That. Is. Fucked. Up.
Mr. P again sat at his desk.
Bo finally chimed in ?It?s not the same, Mr. P. The Confederate flag is
about state?s rights, it?s about? ?
?INCORRECT!? Mr P stood up, his face was bright red.
?Detention! Detention every day until the winter break! And, that still
isn?t even enough. I like you Bo, but you?re going to do this. And when
it?s over, when you claim that your (finger quotes, he made literal
finger quotes) rights have been violated, or whatever else, I don?t
care. People were slaves? ?
?The north had slaves too.?
?Thank you for clarifying that Mr. McFeeny (that?s not Bo?s last name, I
am assuming he was referring to the historian), I was unaware of that.
My mistake.? To say he was dripping sarcasm would be a gross
misunderstatement. ?I don?t care. The facts remain that the
Confederate flag is a symbol, one that, to many, rightfully so,
represents an awful time in our country?s history.?
?So does the American flag. The US flag represented slavery before
the Confederate flag.? Bo was standing up, he was a wise-ass, but he
knew his shit.
?You are correct, but you do not see a US flag here, do you?? Bo
looked around and shook his head.
?You want to kneel when they play the national anthem, I will kneel
with you. You want to protest the US flag, I will protest with you. But, I
am stating right here and right now, whatever the Confederate flag
might mean to you, it represents slavery to many people. If you
disagree with me, if you don?t want detention, if any of you, any single
one of you, feel I am treating Bo unfairly, I will gladly withdraw Bo?s
detention, and make a public apology to him, if just one of you wears
a swastika to school on Monday.?
?That is totally not the same. Southern pride is? . It?s not the Klan.?
?You might be right. To some it is, an argument could be made. But,
what I am saying, is that we live in a free country, you have the right to
wear that. Don?t vandalize anything. Wear it. Wear it in solidarity.
Wear it to support Marta, she can?t wear it, even though it has a
history in Latvian culture predating the Nazi party by centuries. Wear
that symbol. Because, now, we all acknowledge that now, that symbol
means only one thing.?
He turned his back and wrote on the whiteboard.

If you donot say anything,

you are tacitly implying agreement.

He took the flag down, carefully folded it, handed it to Bo and walked
out.

Yeah, we all wondered what would happen. No swastikas. No one
talked to Bo about it.
In Mr. P?s class, one student got up. J. A POC, an African-American
student, I?m not going to name him here, I?m sorry, call me racist,
maybe I am. I apologize to Bo for naming him, I?ll use pseudonyms for
everyone going forward. I?m not going to explain my reasoning, I admit
my mistake. Deal. He stood up and took Marta?s hand and they
walked to the front of the room. He took out a Sharpie and pulled back
his jacket. Over his heart he drew a swastika and stood there.
Ho.
Ly.
Shit.
The room was fucking still.
J. was tearing up. ?That?s seriously fucked up Mr P, Bo?s a punk, but
he didn?t do anything. I?m not going to let him get punished for
expressing an opinion. Any mother-fucker has an issue with me
wearing a swastika, step to me.? No one moved a muscle. Marta tried
to close his jacket, he took it off and dropped it to the floor. He stood
there, tears streaming down his face, for the entire period. And when
class was over he picked up his jacket, slung it over his arm, grabbed
his book bag and went to his next class. He remained standing the
whole day. Every class. He didn?t say a word. At least no one I know
heard him say anything.
At dinner that night, Mr. P stood up to make an announcement. As the
dining hall quieted, J, who was still standing walked over to him, and
put his arm around him and spoke: ?If you don?t say anything, you
are? ? J. forgot the rest and Mr. P finished
?Tacitly implying agreement.? And they sat down, finishing their meal
together. The dining hall was silent.

Last spring, a bunch of us loaded up in S?s car. He was a day student.
My sister was supposed to be going to Myrtle, but instead was jetting
off to Paris. My gain. Big T was all in, and we could stop at his place in
NC. He had never said much about his home life. No one wanted to
ask, we made a lot of assumptions. Scholarship, basketball player.
I?ve lived in the northeast my whole life. And, I?ve been to Myrtle, sure,
but never spent much time south of the Mason-Dixon.
New England has this rep, being all liberal, but it?s white. So. Very.
White. Once we got into ?the south? the difference was brutally
apparent. It?s easy to categorize, standing high atop my mound, but
the reality is, in the south, there are black people and white people.
And, it?s easy to think that the south is home to the Klan and all other
levels of super fucked up racist bullshit, but the truth is, black and
white people are living together. I?m not at all saying that there isn?t
some fucked up racist bullshit going on, Klan members running for
Congress even, but the people you meet, not the collective, many are
in the same boat, if you will. Living in the same conditions. Being a
POC in the south doesn?t make one poor, and being white doesn?t
make one not-poor. These were all people. People who were angry.
I?m no philosopher, I?m no scholar of societal studies, but I know what
I saw.
I was talking to my cousin about it, he lives in Austin. He told me one
time he was flying north, wearing a ?Yo! MTV Raps? shirt. TSA asked
him about the shirt, she wondered if it was vintage, they laughed
about it, and she waved him through. No scan, nothing. He?s
super-fucking white. I think maybe it?s simple.
Maybe it isn?t complicated. They had a moment, this woman of color
and my brother, and they connected, and that was cool.
Maybe we could all try and have a moment.
Mama T made the best biscuits and gravy. Grits, not my thing, but,
those biscuits and gravy? .
Find a moment with each other.
Connect with a person.

Tookie isn?t coming back.
They never do.
But especially in this case.
My favorite Strong Island HAP has left school, and we?ll never get to
hang again.
HAP= Hindi American Princess. She coined that term.
Tooks was funny, if you only heard her, she sounded straight-up
Strong Island, which, she was: born and raised in the wilds of Long
Island- she liked malls with valet service, getting drunk on the beach,
hitting the 21+ clubs, and cruising in her Beemer.
She showed me her ID, which was of an older Indian woman and
explained with an affected Indian accent
"Brock, you do not understand, to you white people, we are all looking
very much the same, so, I secure a false identification from someone
who isn?t even from the same country I am, and no one can be telling
the difference. Funny Caucasians.?
Everyone thought she was Indian, and her fake Indian accent was the
best, but the way she dressed was straight up rich Long Island.
Unless she wanted to fuck with the faculty, in which case she would
don ?traditional? garb and claim it was a holy day, and she needed to
not go to class. Usually, it was because she scored some E.
Her parents were Hindi. They left Pakistan to come to the states,
because, they were a minority there, and wanted more opportunity.
Kids here trying to off themselves isn?t that uncommon. They never
come back. They are sent home for ?medical reasons? and sometimes
they are even given a year?s worth of grades, depending on how liable
the school felt.
In this case, they fucked up.
Her parents are obviously withdrawing her, but administration is
unwilling to take a stand. When you?re hoping for the reach-around
after getting reamed without any lube, you?ll take anything you can
get, I guess, and one tuition isn?t that big a deal, but the cash-money
donors, they can?t be upset.
Administration won?t even talk about it. The teachers will, in
vaguebook terms, not directly referencing Tookie or the shit that
happened to her.

Tomorrow the Electors are going to cast their votes. There are many
calls for them to vote their conscience, to become what is officially
called Faithless Electors.
This is a slippery fucking slope, I do not need a degree in PoliSci to
know this.
Before the election, one Democratic Elector from the Pacific
Northwest vowed to not vote for her, because of DNC and other
shenanigans. Dick move.
But, what about those Republican Electors, the ones representing
those who do not like the President Elect? Those who might be
swayed by W, who, according to sources cast no ballot for president?
What if they decide to ?do the correct thing? as the loud left would
implore them, and cast a vote for her instead.
It could happen.
There was even talk of the DNC or some other big machine with
strong financial backing to pay their legal fees. That isn?t shady at all,
and doesn?t reek of votes being for sale. Not. One. Bit.
But, what if a Dem Elector decides to follow the lead of their
weed-hazed brethren from the NW? What if they cast their vote for the
Jewish senator from the green mountain state? Or, what if they decide
to cast a vote for Him? Big H here is not the Jewish senator, but the
President-elect. To quote John Bender ?It?ll be anarchy!?
It?s not a perfect process, and maybe it needs to be changed, but it?s
not going to change now. And, be honest, if the vote went the other
way, if he won the majority and she won the Electors, would there be
call for change?

I haven?t gotten laid in awhile. His daughter, she looks like an alien, or
a Barbie doll or something. And you know how I know she?s hot. He
said so. That shit is fucked up. My sister?s attractive, in that J.C---
way. I guess that means that, that I am saying that I?m attractive. Well,
have you seen her brothers. So, maybe I am not saying that.
I?ve never actually touched a big ole fake titty. I?ve seen enough porn
to know what they look like, and how unnatural they can look, and
hers look about as unnatural on her frame as anything. I?ve seen fake
tits in person, but I?m not gonna ask my aunt if I can touch them.
That?s creepy, even if part of my interest is purely academic.
But, when your soon to be ruler talks about how attractive his
daughter is in a very creepy way, that?s some Sunday night GoT shit
right there.
And, maybe he is saying that to give us some clue what we are all in
for.
Sometimes, I have it in me to be deep, and talk politics and whatnot,
and sometimes I want to be balls deep.
Tonight is the latter.
Maybe it?s because I?m a bit drunk and Max is sending me pics in his
bra, totally fucking with me. He is doing ok. Oh yeah, he got into

being a dick. But, he?s smiling, so I?m happy for him, and I probably

Faculty seem better. No, that?s not true. They seem resigned.
There was, of course, an initial uptick in activity and activism. It seems
to have died down now. People are just scared.
It will take more than a protest. It will take more than donations to

Action. Not reaction.
J. got in a fight with Jeff and some of his friends. He broke Jeff?s jaw.
Guess who got expelled? I got in my fight before J?s fight, and I wasn?t

There is an instinct to use violence. We want to make change, we?re
angry. But, feed into that, and you cannot win. A dude like J. breaks
Jeff?s jaw, and he is the animal. He is the barbarian. He is the one at

?Duh. Like I?m gonna go get my pussy poked as a dude.? I turned
him around and looked him square in the eyes.
?Yes. Yes, you are.? He shook his head. ?Hey, this is who you are,
and I?m going with you. Don?t be something you?re not. At home,
you?re Max the daughter who shoots guns and drinks Canadian
beer and bakes with mom, right?? He nodded. ?That?s who you are
there. Here, you?re Max, hockey stud, and all around good guy,
even if a bit enigmatic.?
?Enigmatic.?
?Truth.? He rolled his eyes. ?So, if you have to go to see the doc,
you?re going as you.?
He looked down and sniffled. ?But you won?t get to see my super
sexy sports bra.?
?Show me later, douchebag.? I gave him a hug. One the bus, I held
his hand the whole way, and this college guy, total frat bro, was
rocking the safety pin, sat down next to us. He didn?t say a word.
He nodded when he got off the boss
?Later.?
?Later, dude. Thanks.?
?You cool?? I asked Max.
?No. Yes. No. You?re cool.?
?Nah.?
Some people still had Election signs up in their yards. We might
have both been expecting protestors or something. Nothing. ?Can I
ask you a question, Max??
?Duh, of course.?
?So, it?s just business as usual, no hormones or anything.? He
shook his head and smiled.
?I like my body, I don?t want boy parts. And, you know, maybe
when I?m older I?ll wear a bra and be a dude. I don?t know. But, no
hormones for me. And, It?s not? . It?s not for me. I have friends, like
forums and stuff, people I know, they are going through it, and
that?s fucking awesome too. But, it?s not for me, does that make
sense?? I nodded. ?So, yeah, doc is gonna get up all in that pussy
and do his thing, sometimes I ask them to breathe on the metal to
warm it, that shit can be cold.? I laughed. ?You?re welcome to stay
and hold my hand.?
?Is that? do people do that??
?No, idiot, I?m not pregnant and this isn?t some sort of movie where
we finally get to see a picture of little BJ.? I laughed again. ?You like
that, B-Rock Jr. BJfor short.?
?It?s perfect.?
?Thanks, dude. This means a lot.?

Max and I were having breakfast. No, nothing like that, get your mind
out of the gutter. We stopped at the dining hall on the way to class.
This dude comes by, he lives upstairs, I honestly do not even want to
give him a name right now.
He throws the panties from Max?s go bag on the table. ?Make panties
great again.?
I stood up, and pushed him. I?d like to say he went down, but he didn?t.
?Are you fucking kidding me??
?What?s up? I?ve seen you in the locker room, I know you have a dick.?
?No, you?re the dick here. Don?t be an asshole.?
?Fucking chill out, everyone knows Max is a chick, it?s not a fucking
secret.?
I?m sure the dining hall was pretty quiet right now and everyone was
watching. I?m sure because Max told me. I was hyper-fucking focused.
?No, you?re wrong, Max is a guy.?
?Bull. Shit. She sucked my boy?s dick last term, and he felt her up.?
Here is the moment.
Mark your calendar.
This was my moment. My epiphany.
I took a deep breath.
?Look, who cares. Allow me to correct your grammar. He sucked your
boys dick, and he felt him up. But, why do you have to air dirty
laundry? There is nothing cool about that.?
And I wanted to say so much more. I wanted to explain how it made
him look bad, and just ramble on. But this was the moment.
And I sat down, slid Max?s panties off the table and put them in my
lap, and went back to eating breakfast.
This was my moment. J. wasn?t wrong when he broke Jeff?s jaw.
And, if I had tried to break this asshole?s jaw, I might have not been
wrong.
But, that was the easy thing to do. It?s easy to turn away. It?s easy to
not do anything. It?s easy to act rashly. It?s easy to lash out.
Do the hard thing. The hard thing can be so much more powerful.
Don?t be stupid. Don?t try and hug someone who has a literal gun
pointed at you.
Stop. Take a breath.

DO THE HARD THING.

I think he muttered something under his breath and walked out.

And as the door slammed shut behind him, there was a sigh. I
remember that.
My phone lit up ?dude, that was awesome.? I didn?t recognize the
number.

TXT to Max ?Dude, I?m sorry.?
?For??
?I was thinking about yesterday, and I did the total dick move, like I am
some literal white-skinned knight trying to protect you.?
?Stop with the white-skinned knight, you?re approaching Klan shit
there. Like, I know you?re not, but just chill with that. I appreciate the
wordplay though.?
?Ok?
?No. Facts are facts, I?m 5?6? and although I may play tough on the ice,
deep down, I just like to take bubble baths.?
?Srsly??
?No, idiot. But he?s over 6?and you?re closer to 6?than I am. I
appreciate it. He wasn?t going to hurt me. And you didn?t hurt him.
Physically, I mean.?
?Thanks.?
?Chill. You know what I mean. I didn?t think anything of it. And, maybe,
I?ve been more focused on what happened after.?
?You mean when my heart stopped.?
?No, you didn?t give me my panties back yet.?
?Oh, snap!?
?Relax B, jk.?
?Kk?
?If you don?t say anything? . And frankly, I?ve been not saying
anything, and that?s ok. I don?t have to hide anything, but that also
doesn?t mean I need to flaunt anything, right??
?Sure, I guess.?
?No, look B, you did good. And, since you?re being a big softie and
apologizing, it means even more. I was terrified and embarrassed,
and didn?t want to pick a fight with that roid-ranger.?
?You think??
?I know. I?ve seen him shoot up.?
?That?s fucked.?
?Right.?
?I am empowered, I feel empowered. But, end of the day, now, maybe
I want to try and do the hard thing.?
?Really??
?Yes, idiot. Really. Sheesh.?

It?s the big first weekend of winter sportsball, all the teams have home
games. I don?t do an organized winter sport. Conditioning, getting
ready for LAX season bruh! The upside is I can attend games and
cheer the teams on. I don?t have a big fur coat though.
We won some. We lost some, and there were big hits on the ice.
People yelled. They yelled louder than they might have normally.
Trustees were here this weekend. It was MLK weekend. We always
have a school-wide presentation on Monday, and of course this
coming Friday is Coronation Day. No one has a clue what to expect.
To say it was going to be difficult, balancing all the bad shit going on
out there with a day dedicated to Dr. King. Eight years ago, I imagine
the vibe was totally different.
But right now, kids are just trying to be kids, and play sportsball, and
scream.
And, of course, there are going to be some sick parties tonite, bruh.

Never? ?
It started out normally enough, but quickly turned into something much
more.

I NEVER...

Went to class drunk.

Paid for answers for a test.
Let someone else ?win? because it meant more to them.
Sent an unprompted inappropriate selfie.
Took off my clothes for money.
Had a crush on a faculty member.
Hooked up with a teacher.
Shoplifted.
Stole a car.
Broke a promise when it really meant something.
Created something so profound it made someone cry.
Stood up for someone who was being discriminated against.
Bought a meal for someone who needed one.
Tried to fuck with someone?s expectations of me.
Fell in love.
Had my heart broken.
Took advantage of someone when they were in a bad way.
Was honest about my feelings when it meant I might get hurt.
Wanted to actually do something good.
Had to worry about clothes on my back, a roof over my head, or food
on the table.

I am not particularly gifted with words. I wish I was eloquent in ways

that would resonate historically.
Lacking that, I can say this:
There is a bus heading to DC tomorrow, to protest.
A bunch of the faculty are going, same with students. It?s not allowed.
Administration has not even tacitly said it is ok. But teachers have
been pretty upfront about their attendance, and have offered up the
opportunity to students.
I have very mixed feelings on this.
It?s about being part of something. It?s powerful. But is it mob rule?
How many teachers have pledged to go, due to peer pressure. How
many will go, because of peer pressure? Mob mentality? Shortly after
the election, several public schools had walk-outs. Does it make
someone a bad person if they do not want to go? Will they be judged
harshly by their peers?
I know several students who will be going tomorrow.
I want to do something more.
My classmates and I want to do something more. Not Greenpeace
more, although there is a place for that.
More.
We have so much, we?ve been thrust into adulthood, but within a
protective bubble. How far can we push? We can walk among society.
We have near-infinite resources available to us. And we have
gumption, good ole fashioned gumption.
Or, if you will, we have youth. We have the passion and fire of youth.
Fuck burning the candle at both ends. We?re throwing the candle in
the bonfire just to see what happens.
I joke about the Coronation, Biz doesn?t understand why I call it that.
Maybe, I just want to be cool.
Biz talks about a revolution.
We?re on the same page.
The revolution will not be televised.
The revolution will destroy from within.
The revolution is doing 120 in Daddy?s Porsche.
We need to be smarter. We need to use what we have, it is not about
detaching ourselves from our pasts, it is about successful deployment
of the extensive resources we have available.
We?re not street kids decked out in black leather armed with samurai
swords and some sort of laser rifle, or whatever scifi bullshit is out
there.
Violence is not the answer. It might be an answer, but the answer is
something bigger. Something they will never see coming.
We?ll be wearing pink and green.

?(Lawrenceville School) ran a fascinating

experiment with students taking core science
courses. When students returned after summer
vacation, they were asked to retake the final exam
they had completed three months earlier. Actually, it
was a simplified version of the final, as the faculty
eliminated any detailed questions that students
shouldn?t be expected to remember a few months
later. The results were stunning. When students
took the final in June, the average grade was a B+
(87%); when the simplified test was taken in
September, the average grade was an F (58%). Not
one student retained mastery of all important
concepts covered by the course.?

?chair?identifies certain physical objects by their
function, despite differences in form, appearance,
and construction. The function identified by the
concept of ?social capital?is the value of these
aspects of social structure to actors as resources
that they can use to achieve their interests.?
