A SUMMER OF

RESOURCE TOOLKIT

INTRODUCTION
Summer is right around the corner! The last Learn Kind activity of the school year will help
you reflect on the kindest things you’ve experienced lately and give you the tools to create
a summer of kindness for you and those around you.

Part 1: Time to Reflect

Part 2: Scientific Kindness Jars
Part 3: Summer Kindness Challenge

1 TIME TO REFLECT
Take a few moments to sit with those in your home and think about the
kindness you’ve shown and received the last few months. What made
you feel the best? What was the most helpful? Make a list of the ways
you want to keep showing kindness this summer.

Tell us what you learned!

2 SCIENTIFIC KINDNESS JARS
How can you show kindness this summer? A recent study done by kindness.org with
researchers at Harvard University showed that many of the acts listed below may be the
most effective kind acts you can do right now. Of course, they’re not the only ways to
show kindness. Fill in the empty strips with your own ideas!

Instructions: Cut out the “Choose a Kind Act” label and tape it to a jar or cup. Then cut
out the kindness strips and add them to the jar. Each day have a different person pull a
kindness strip from the jar. When the act is completed, put a small tally mark on the back
and return it to the jar. At the end of the summer, add up how many kind acts those in your
home completed and choose a fun way to celebrate!

3 SUMMER KINDNESS CHALLENGE
Did you know that scientists actually study kindness? This summer, we want YOU to be the
scientist and research the impact of kindness. What happens when you do a different kind
act each day for a week? How will you feel when you’re done?

Instructions: Select a week to do your research (start on Sunday). Each day select a
different kind act from the list below (or choose your own). Decide who you will do the kind
act for. Do the kind act, and then observe and record how it made you feel to do it. At the
end of the week, reflect on how it made you feel to do kind acts.
