POWER DISTRIBUTION ENGINEERING

EXTENDED SPECIAL SEMESTER 2019-2020

GROUP PROJECT

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare a complete project report for the given project.

 Paper: A4
 No. of Pages: depends on the project achievement
 Format: Font – Times New Roman size 12; Spacing – 1.5 times
 Printing Option: Double sided (accept cover & reference pages)
 References: Style: IEEE 206; minimum no. 5. Failure to provide complete reference list or
plagiarism will result to report rejection.
 Appendix: The complete schematic diagram, any related diagrams, and tables, etc.
 Softcopy of the test system, simulation results and other related files to software
simulations.

2. The due date of the formal report: 1st June 2020

Based on the requirements mentioned in Electricity Supply Application Handbook (ESAH), design
the Medium Voltage distribution system for a new township with a commercial area, a general
hospital and residential areas. The general hospital requires Level 2 Security as defined by TNB
Distribution. The new township is to be connected to any subtransmission network and your design
should equip the general hospital with renewable energy (RE).

The following details must be included in your proposed design:

• The estimated overall capacity of the designed system required to cater for load for the year
2030.
• Types of distributed generation (DG) using RE and the proposed RE capacity.
• Protection for all equipment at every voltage level in maintaining the overall system
reliability & security including the protection needed at DG and common point of coupling.

EXTENDED SPECIAL SEMESTER 2019-2020

• All requirements for bulk supply and distribution substations with ratings of transformers
and switchgears must be clearly shown with accompanying calculations and rationale.
• All cable sizes and ratings must be shown with accompanying calculations. You need to
define the voltage levels, types of cables, method of laying, etc, that will affect the cable
ampacity.

The network must be underground cable except for the supply to residential areas. Prove your
design through relevant calculations and sound engineering principles. Verify the stability of
your designed power system using software simulation.
