TOLENTINO, Paul Diony S.

CE195-E02
What field of engineering you want to pursue?
-Engineering Education
Why?
-My first choice was to take a course of BSED Major in Mathematics
but my parents wanted me to take Civil Engineering. But then I thought
engineering would also mean math. Also, my father worked as a
construction worker for many years to feed our family and I thought it
was a way to honor his hard work by taking CE course.
Short background with the chosen field
-Engineering education is the activity of teaching knowledge and
principles to the professional practice of engineering. It includes an
initial education (bachelor's and/or master's degree), and any advanced
education and specializations that follow.
5 notable Engineers in that field
a. Karl von Terzaghi, Technical University in Graz
- In 1883, he was born the first child of Army Lieutenant-Colonel Anton
von Terzaghi, of Italian origin, and Amalia Eberle in Prague, in what is
now the Czech Republic.’
Notable Project: Father of Soil Mechanics “
- Soil mechanics is a branch of soil physics and applied mechanics that
describes the behavior of soils.

b. Christian Otto Mohr, Polytechnic School in Hannover.

-He was born on 8 October 1835 to a landowning family in Wesselburen
in the Holstein region.
Notable Project: Mohr's circle
- Mohr's circle is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the
transformation law for the Cauchy stress tensor.
c. Robert Manning, Arterial Drainage Division of the Irish Office of
Public Works
- Manning was born in Normandy, France, the son of a soldier who had
fought the previous year at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1826 he moved to
Waterford, Ireland and in time worked as an accountant.
Notable Project: Manning Formula
- The Manning formula is an empirical formula estimating the average
velocity of a liquid flowing in a conduit that does not completely enclose
the liquid, i.e., open channel flow.
d. Russell Hibbeler, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign
- He is an author of books about engineering mechanics, theory of
structures and many more.
Notable Project: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS (book)
- Structural Analysis provides students with a clear and thorough
presentation of the theory and application of structural analysis as it
applies to trusses, beams, and frames.
e. Sir Isaac Newton, Trinity College, Cambridge
- was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and
author who is widely recognized as one of the most influential scientists
of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution.
Notable Project: Calculus
- is the mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that
geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of
generalizations of arithmetic operations.

Give 1 project that you want to do in your lifetime

- The project I would like to have is to restore the sunken town of
Bacolor, Pampanga. It was always my dream to see its former glory
before it was buried by the lahar in Pinatubo Eruption.
Profile:
i.Name: Anthony S. Tolentino
ii. School and S.Y Graduated:
De La Salle University 2012
iii. Field of Engineering:
Electronics Engineering Professor/Teacher
iv. Project Currently Working:
DARE TO, DOST - CEST, DOST -GIA
v. Short Description of the project:
The CHED DARE TO project is a CHED funded research which
provides a charging station for the Electronic Tricycle Association
of Bulaon San Fernando Pampanga. It aims to harness energy
coming from the vehicles passing thru a speed bump that generates
electricity which will be used by the members of the association.
The DOST-CEST project aims to provide Indigenous People of
Mabalacat City a means of Education for the Elementary Students
of the locale.
i. Why study Engineering?
- Research and Design is one of the reasons I took
Engineering course. This gives me opportunity to learn the
applied techniques of engineering in solving daily life's
problems.
ii. If you are not an Engr, what do you think you’d be doing
right now?
- I think I would be a Detective/ Police since investigations
are one of my interests.
iii. What are the dilemmas that you faced while working as an
engr?
- As a researcher, funding is a major problem most specially
here in our country. There is a lack of support in terms of
funding of the projects as well as delay in some
procurement processes. Another problem is there is too
many good engineers here in the Philippines but some are
going outside the country and helping other nations
instead of doing something for our country. This is
primarily because there is a minimal compensation
compared to other countries that gives them opportunities
financially.
iv. Are you happy with where you are right now as an engr?
- Yes I am happy because I was able to help my country but
of course, I still desire more to help our nation be at the
top in the global competency.
v. Give 1 piece of advice to all engg students who are working
their way to be an engr.
- Be patient, work hard, fail, get back up, and repeat. This is
the only way to be better.
vi. What would be the project you like to work on in the future?
- To improve the lifespan of the battery (not the charging
life).
REFLECTION

In this research, I learned that being engineer brings us opportunity

to provide modern solutions to modern problems nowadays. In dealing
failures, we always have to find a way to get back on our feet. Find ways
where everyone can benefit and learn from it. We should be able to
utilize our own set of skills in order to improve our modern world.
This term was one of the toughest terms I’ve ever encountered.
With my last subjects coming in simultaneously, I had to work myself
out more than I ever had. Despite all the sleepless and cramming nights,
I know these will all lead me to becoming more matured and successful
and all will be worth it.
