THEORIES OF LEARNING

UNIT 1
October 27th, 2018

FULL NAME: ________Ilse Paulette Estrella Bañuelos__________________

1.1 What is learning?

It is called learning in the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values

and attitudes, made possible through study, teaching or experience. This
process can be understood from different positions, which implies that
there are different theories linked to the fact of learning. Behavioral
psychology, for example, describes learning according to the changes that
can be observed in the behavior of a subject.

1.2 How does a human being learn?

(pair work/ discuss possible answers/ come up with a clear definition)

The fundamental process in learning is imitation (the repetition of an

observed process, which involves time, space, skills and other resources). In
this way, children learn the basic tasks necessary to survive and develop in a
community.

Human learning is defined as the relatively invariable change in the behavior

of a person based on the result of experience. This change is achieved after
the establishment of an association between a stimulus and its corresponding
response.

The pedagogy establishes different types of learning. Learning by discovery

can be mentioned (the contents are not received passively, but are
rearranged to adapt them to the cognition scheme), the receptive learning
(the individual understands the content and reproduces it, but fails to
discover something new), the significant learning (when the subject links
their previous knowledge with the new ones and gives them coherence
according to their cognitive structure) and repetitive learning (produced
when the data is memorized without understanding them or linking them
with previous knowledge).

(summarize partner's response below)

What's Your Learning Style? The Results

Your Scores:

Auditory: 15%

Visual: 60%

Tactile: 25%

Visual

If you are a visual learner, you learn by reading or seeing pictures. You
understand and remember things by sight. You can picture what you are
learning in your head, and you learn best by using methods that are primarily
visual. You like to see what you are learning.

As a visual learner, you are usually neat and clean. You often close your eyes
to visualize or remember something, and you will find something to watch if
you become bored. You may have difficulty with spoken directions and may
be easily distracted by sounds. You are attracted to color and to spoken
language (like stories) that is rich in imagery.
Here are some things that visual learners like you can do to learn better:

 Sit near the front of the classroom. (It won't mean you're the teacher's
pet!)

 Have your eyesight checked on a regular basis.

 Use flashcards to learn new words.

 Try to visualize things that you hear or things that are read to you.

 Write down key words, ideas, or instructions.

 Draw pictures to help explain new concepts and then explain the
pictures.

 Color code things.

 Avoid distractions during study times.

 Remember that you need to see things, not just hear things, to learn
well.

1.4 Introducing Piaget's Learning Stages (SOURCE- Piaget’s Stages: University of

Georgia)

(briefly describe each one/ provide examples)

A) SENSORIMOTOR STAGE (BIRTH TO 2 YEARS OLD)

The infant builds an understanding of himself or herself and reality (and how
things work) through interactions with the environment. It is able to
differentiate between itself and other objects. Learning takes place via
assimilation (the organization of information and absorbing it into existing
schema) and accommodation (when an object cannot be assimilated and the
schemata have to be modified to include the object.

B) PREOPERATIONAL STAGE (AGES 2 TO 4)

The child is not yet able to conceptualize abstractly and needs concrete
physical situations. Objects are classified in simple ways, especially by
important features.

C) CONCRETE OPERATIONS (AGES 7 TO 11)

As physical experience accumulates, accomodation is increased. The child

begins to think abstractly and conceptualize, creating logical structures that
explain his or her physical experiences.

D) FORMAL OPERATIONS (BEGINNING AT AGES 11 TO 15)

Cognition reaches its final form. By this stage, the person no longer requires
concrete objects to make rational judgements. He or she is capable of
deductive and hypothetical reasoning. His or her ability for abstract thinking
is very similar to an adult.
