Basic Definitions:
1. Statistical Experiments
–is any process that generates a
data.
Rolling dice
Flipping a coin
Picking a card
2. Definition:
The set of all possible outcomes
of a statistical experiment is
called the SAMPLE SPACE and
is denoted by S.
Examples:
Tossing coin
S ={head, tail}
Rolling a die
S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Each outcome in a sample is called an element or a
member of the sample space or simply a sample
point.
Basic Definitions:
3. Definition.
An EVENT is a subset of a sample space.
a) If an event is a set containing only one
element of the sample space, then it is called a
simple event.

A B is shaded
Basic Definitions:
8. Definition:
Two events A and B are MUTUALLY
EXCLUSIVE or disjoint if A∩B = , that
is if A and B have no elements in
common.
A B
Basic Definitions:
9. Definition:
The union of two events A and B, denoted by AB,
is the events containing all the elements that
belong to A or B or both.

10. Theorem:
Several results that follow from the
foregoing definitions, which may easily
be verified by means of Venn
diagrams, are as follows:
Basic Definitions:
a) A∩ =
b) A =
A
c) A ∩ A’ =
d) A A’ =
S
Basic Definitions:
e) S’ =
f) ’ =
S
g) (A’)’ =
A
h) (A∩B)’ =
A’B’
i) (AB)’ =
A’∩B’
Exercises:
1. List the elements of each of the following sample
spaces:
a. the set of integers between 1 and 50 divisible by 8;
b. the set S = {x 𝑥 2 + 4x – 5 = 0};
c. the set S = {x x is a continent};
d. the set S = {x 2x – 4 ≥ 0 and x< 1}.
Therefore,
0 ≤ P(A) ≤ 1, P() = 0, and P(S) = 1.

Example 5.
The probability that Paula will passes
Mathematics is 2/3, and the probability
that she passes English is 4/9. If the
probability of passing both courses is 1/4,
what is the probability that Paula will pass
at least one of these courses?
Additive Rules
4. Corollary:
If A and B are mutually exclusive, then
P(A B) = P(A) + P(B).

Example 6.
What is the probability of getting a total of 7
or 11 when a pair of dice are tossed?
Additive Rules
5. Theorem:
If A and A’ are complementary events, then
P(A) + P(A’) = 1.
Proof:
Since A A’ = S and the sets A and A’
are disjoint, then
1 = P(S)
= P(A A’ )
= P(A) + P(A’) .

The probability that tomorrow will rain
is 55%. What is the probability that it
will not rain tomorrow?
