How FAO works

Areas of support:
 Support to food and nutrition security policy
 Support to Pakistan new growth strategy through sustainable agricultural economic
growth
 Disaster risk reduction and emergency response including natural resource management
 Capacity development for agriculture sector under devolution
Support to food and nutrition security policy: Support includes reducing household food
insecurity and malnutrition in rural and urban areas; enhancing productive safety nets and
support to the Pakistan Integrated Nutrition Strategy; and implementing the FAO Disaster Risk
Management/Disaster Risk Reduction Programme targeting post-emergency acute food
insecurity and promoting agricultural livelihood early recovery in areas affected by floods,
earthquake and displacement.
Support to Pakistan new growth strategy through sustainable agricultural economic
growth: FAO supports provincial agricultural investment projects and programmes linking small
farmers to markets; raising productivity of crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and forestry
through sustainable intensified production using ecosystem services to reduce fossil fuel
dependence; promoting productive and decent rural employment through value addition and
market linkages; facilitating more “Food for Cities” actions; and encouraging public/private
partnerships to strengthen value chains.
Disaster risk reduction and emergency response including natural resource
management: We support vulnerable rural populations to adapt to fragile ecosystems, climate
change, man-made and natural disasters; we collaborate with international, national and
provincial partners to improve their capacity to monitor and assess national emergencies and
trans-boundary pest and disease outbreaks; and we design and implement programmes to assist
vulnerable rural populations impacted by such events.
Capacity development for agriculture sector under devolution: Support includes collection
of gender and age disaggregated data to create reliable databases and information systems to
provide a solid basis for policy making on food security; enhanced capacity for policy making on
relevant regulatory and legal issues such as land tenure, water governance, food safety and seed
certification; adaptation of international standards and agreements into national systems;
strengthening food safety and quality control and management systems; and support to the
federal and provincial Governments to strengthen post-devolution policies and institutions.
Ms. Minà Dowlatchahi, FAO Representative Pakistan

Ms Dowlatchahi, a national of Italy, holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from University La

Sapienza, Rome, Italy, and a post‐graduate Certificate in Intermediate Microeconomics from the
London School of Economics and Political Sciences, University of London, UK. Ms
Dowlatchahi started her career in 1987 as a Research Associate in the Faculty of Economics,
Department of Agriculture Economics, University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. She can speak
English, French, Spanish and Italian.

From 1988 to 1992, she worked as an Economist and Project Manager in the private research
institute Society for Applied Mathematics and Economics (SOMEA) on research and
development projects in Italy and Sub‐Saharan Africa working with the CILSS (Comité inter‐
État de lutte contre la sécheresse au Sahel). In 1992, she joined the United Nations Conference
on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as Associate Economic Affairs Officer in the
International Trade and Commodities Division, Geneva, Switzerland.

Ms Dowlatchahi joined FAO in 2000 as Programme Planning and Budget Officer in the Office
of Programme, Budget and Evaluation (PBE) and was promoted to Senior Strategy, Planning and
Budget Officer in 2003. In 2010, she was appointed Chief, Unit for Field Programme and Results
based Monitoring in the Technical Cooperation Department (TCD). She served as Deputy
Director, Office of Strategy, Planning and Resources Management (OSP) from July 2013 to
April 2017. She is appointed as FAO Representative to Pakistan since May, 2017.
