MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

Teacher: School:
Date: Class: Time: 35 minutes
Unit: Sets, Relations and Functions
Topic: Sets
Pre-knowledge:

solids, Number Theory (types of numbers), definition of a set, identification of a set,
naming of a set, multiples, factors, even and odd numbers, name a set, represent a set,
definition of a universal set and subset.

OBJECTIVES: By the end of this session learners will: Classification

1. Discover the main characteristics of a Venn diagram. AT

2. Identify the elements of a universal set, subset and AT

complement of a set.

3. Interpret how Venn diagrams can be used in life. Aff/AT

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this session learners Classification

will:
1. Discover the main characteristics of a Venn diagram through AT
student observations.

2. Identify the elements of a universal set, subset and AT

complement of a set using Venn diagrams and the listing
method.

3. Interpret how Venn diagrams can be used in life by giving Aff/AT

examples.
SET INDUCTION: (Time: 3 minutes) Resources
Teacher puts up a picture of the universal set of numbers between and Whiteboard
including 0 to 9 in a rectangle. The teacher asks the students to list the Markers
members in the universal set. The teacher then draws a circle around laptop
some of the elements in the universal set and labels the circle A. projector
Teacher asks the students to list the members of that set A. The teacher
then states that this diagram is called a Venn diagram and is drawn
through the listing of the elements in a set. Teacher states the topic for
the lesson is Venn diagrams within the topic of sets.

SECTION 1 (Time: 22 minutes)

Content: Introduction to Venn diagrams Associated Objective(s):1-2

Teaching Points:

1. The universal set in a Venn diagram is represented by a rectangular shape.

2. The universal set is labeled using capital U or E to the left or right on the top
of the rectangle.
3. All the elements of the universal set lie within the rectangle.
4. The universal set may contain other sets within it called a subset.
5. A subset within the universal set is drawn in the shape of a circle with its
elements inside of the circle.
6. A subset is labeled with a Capital letter to the top of the circle.
7. Elements that are outside the circle of the subset and are in the rectangle are
called the complement of the subset.
8. If the subset is set A then the complement of the set A is written as A', which
would represent the elements outside of A.

Students come up with more
examples.

Sectional Review (Assessment): (Time: 3 minutes) Associated

Outcomes: 1 – 2

The teacher asks the following questions:

1. List some of the characteristics of a Venn Diagram.

2. What is the name of the set can be found within the Universal set in a Venn

diagram?

3. Give a set B, what are the elements that are not in set B?

CLOSURE: (Time: 2 minutes)

Students watch a You Tube video on Venn Diagram and the compliment of a set.

FINAL ASSESSMENT TASK/ACTIVITY: (Time: 5 minutes)
Teacher creates little circle dots with an individual number on it from 1 to 30. The
teacher distributes one number per student. The teacher then writes on the board:
U = {Natural numbers from and including 1 to 30} and A = {odd numbers} and draws
the following. U Students are required
to
A stick their number in the
correct place on the Venn
diagram.
Reasonable level of Achievement: Outcome(s)
90% will be able to list the main characteristics of a Venn diagram. 1
100% will be able to identify the elements of a universal set, subset 2
and complement of a set using Venn diagrams and the listing method.

Handout#1

The Venn Diagram

Questions:

1. List the elements in the universal set U.

2. List the elements in the set A.

What are the characteristics of this Venn diagram?

Please be guided by the following questions

1. What shape represents the universal set?

2. Using what symbol and where is the universal set labelled?
3. Where do all the elements of the universal set lie?
4. Can the universal set contain another set? If yes, what is this other set called?
5. What shape is the shape of the other set drawn within the universal set and what does this shape
represent?
6. Where and with what is the other set labelled?

Handout#2
1.(a) Draw the following Venn diagram given:

U = {Numbers from and including 1 to 15} and M = {Multiples of 3}

Note:
- It helps to list the elements in the set first, eg. U = {1,2,

- M is a subset of the universal set U, hence all the elements of M must lie within U.

- Remember to label appropriately.

(b) Are there elements that are not in M but still in the universal set U?

Note:
- The compliment of a set A, are the elements that are not within A.

- The compliment of set A is denoted by A', this represents elements not within A.

(c) What are these elements called?

(d) List the elements that are not in M but still in the universal set.

2. (a) Draw the following Venn diagram given:

E = {Numbers from and including 1 to 10} and V = {even numbers}

(b) Are there elements that are not in M but still in the universal set U?

(c) What are these elements called?

(d) List the elements that are not in V but still in the universal set.

(e) Is there a subset in seen in this Venn diagram.

(f) What is the subset of U? and why is it a subset?

Homework Questions
(a) Draw the following Venn diagram given the following:

E = {Letters in the English alphabet} and V ={vowels}

(b) List the elements of the set E, V and V'.

(c) What are n(V) and n(V')?

(d) Which statement/s is/are correct? (A) V ⊆ E (B) E ⊆ V' (C) V' ⊆ V (D) V' ⊆ E
