Art Appreciation

Description:
Art Appreciation is a semester long course that will introduce students to the
basic elements of art and design in preparation for Art I. The elements that will
be covered during this course include Color, Value, Line, Shape, Texture and
Form. In addition, students will discuss art history and aesthetics, as well as
learn about art from various cultures, including origami, masks, and calligraphy.

Supplies/Materials:
Students are expected to have the following for class:

Notebook: The style of notebook is optional. Students may use a sketchbook if


they prefer, but it is not required.

Eraser: Any eraser will do, but gum erasers work best. Wal-Mart carries gum
erasers in both their home office section and their arts and crafts section.

Pencils: At least two #2 wooden pencils. Plastic mechanical pencils are not
acceptable.

Grading:
Class participation – 40%. Class participation is graded on daily assignments as
well as the handling of class materials in the correct manner. Students are
expected to come to class prepared and use their class time effectively. Any
assignment that is not completed in class should be completed at home.

Quizzes – 20%. Quizzes will be based on class notes.

Projects – 30%. Project grades will be based on time and effort spent on the
project, as well as creativity, preparation, correct use of materials and neatness.

Homework – 10%. Students will be expected to complete one to two homework


assignments a week.

Class expectations:
o Please be quiet while the teacher is giving instructions.
o Please work quietly.
o You may only leave the classroom with permission and a pass.
o There is to be no food or drinks in the art room.
o Make sure your name is on your work.
o Only submit work you have created.

Expectations for art:


o Be respectful of the tools and supplies.
o Be respectful of other students’ work.
o The tools and supplies are to remain in the art room.
o Art materials should not be wasted.
o Clean up is MANDATORY and will begin 5 – 10 minutes before class
ends.
o You are responsible for:
 Cleaning up your work area.
 Helping to clean your table
 Cleaning the floor in your area.
 Putting away all supplies.

Many students come into an art class with the fear that their art works won’t be
“good enough.” Although talent and creativity play a role in the development of
every artist, hard work is even more important! I’m looking forward to working
with each one of you this semester and to see what fantastic things you will
create! 
