Course Objectives:
The study of subject Engineering Mechanics in undergraduate program in Mechanical
Engineering Branch will achieve the following major objectives:
1- The primary objective of the study of engineering mechanics is to develop the capacity to
predict the effects of force and motion while carrying out the creative design functions of
3. The course uses the Laws of Mechanics to 3. Design/Development of solutions: Design solutions
for complex engineering problems and design system
predict forces in and motions of machines and components or processes that meet the specified needs
with appropriate consideration for the public health and
structures. The course is the key prerequisite safety and the cultural societal and environmental
considerations.
course to sequences of courses dealing with
mechanics of machines, stress analysis and
design of mechanical systems.
4. Comprehensive, theory based understanding 1. Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of
mathematics and science, with fundamentals of
of the underpinning natural and physical Engineering to be able to solve complex engineering
sciences and the engineering fundamentals problems.
applicable to the engineering discipline. Apply 6. The Engineer and Society: Apply Reasoning informed
by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health,
fundamental concepts of kinematics and safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent
kinetics of particles and rigid bodies to the responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering
analysis of simple, practical problems. practice.
5. Engineering Mechanics will help the student 12. Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need
to prepare to a large extend for various for and have the preparation and ability to
competitive examinations like GATE , IES , engage in independent and life-long learning

UNIT-I ASSIGNMENT
Q.4 PQRS is a four bar chain with link PS fixed. The length of the links are PQ=62.5,
QR=175, RS=112.5, PS=200mm. the crank rotates at 10rad/s clockwise. Draw the
velocity and acceleration diagram when angle QPS=60º. Find angular velocity and
acceleration of link QR and RS.
Q.5 The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed
of 300 r.p.m. The crank is 150 mm and the connecting rod is 600 mm long.
Determine : 1. Linear velocity and acceleration of the midpoint of the connecting
rod, and 2. angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod, at a
crank angle of 45° from inner dead centre position.
