Functional Map
A functional map gives an overview of the activities which are carried out to deliver a particular role
or purpose. The map below for electrical fitting has been updated following the Working Group
meeting. National Occupational Standards have been produced for each of the functions. The
updated version is below:
Main purpose: Installing, testing and commissioning electrical systems and equipment in
engineering construction.
2 Install, test and 2.1. Install electrical cabling and wiring systems, enclosures
commission electrical plant and equipment (plant)
and equipment (plant)
2.2. Terminate cabling systems, wiring systems and
equipment (plant)
Overview This standard is about the installation of electrical cabling and wiring systems,
enclosures and equipment (plant) in engineering construction.
You will need to be able to carry out: isolation procedures and measuring and;
marking out for and installation of cabling and wiring systems, enclosures and
equipment whilst adhering to Health and safety legislation, regulations and safe
working practices.
In the context of this standard, your responsibility is to interpret and work within
given specifications, selecting techniques and making variations to achieve the
best possible result. In some cases, you may still be expected to refer to
others for final authorisation, even though you remain responsible for
identifying and implementing decisions.
