PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

STANDARD PROFESIONAL
PRACTICE 2010
SPP DOCUMENTS OUTLINE

 SPP DOC 201: PRE-DESIGN SERVICES

 SPP DOC 202: REGULAR DESIGN SERVICES
 SPP DOC 203: SPECIALIZED ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES
 SPP DOC 204a: FULLTIME SUPERVISION SERVICES
 SPP DOC 204b: CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT SERVICES
 SPP DOC 205: POST-CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
 SPP DOC 206: COMPREHENSIVE ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES
 SPP DOC 207: DESIGN–BUILD SERVICES
 SPP DOC 208: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION
 SPP DOC 209: PROFESSIONAL ARCH’L CONSULTING SERVICES
STANDARD PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 2010

General:

1. Establish the things on how things work and what activities

are there before even the ‘signing of the contract’
2. Focus on the services of an Architect.
3. Be wary of the minimum basic fees that the Architect will be
compensated for
4. The importance of how will the Architect be compensated
in the whole or for each phase in the development of the
project
5. Then, how to be compensated and to be paid is also a
different matter.
STANDARD PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 2010

General:

6. Architect’s are not only for the Architectural Design of the

project, there are a lot of services that can be focused
through but requires some specialization
7. Differentiate the functions of the Project Manager and
Construction Manager
8. A practice which lets the Architect’s Design and to also Build
Obligations of the Owner for the Project
9. Liabilities and Limitations of each Professional in the Field
including the ‘Architect’
10. Ways to be selected for the Project by different methods
and applications
SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT

Direct Selection

 For relatively ‘Small’ Projects

1. Reputation

2. Personal or Business Acquaintance from a Friend

3. Recommendation from an Architect or a Client (Former)

4. Recommendation from an another client

SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT

Comparative Selection

 There is analysis of CV’s, skills, experience, reputation, and

even projects erected

Though, the process involved is:

1. Invitation
2. Pre-Qualification
3. Interview
4. Verification
5. Evaluation and Ranking
6. Negotiation
SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT

Design Competition

 Used for ‘Civic or Monumental Projects where ‘Architects’ or

‘Firms’ are involved.

 Advantages:
1. Opportunities for RLA’s to showcase their works without
being liable to the Code of Ethical Conduct
2. The point where Architect’s can submit design proposals in
a same time
3. A time when an Architect can do design concepts parallel
to the other Designing Architects.
SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT

 Advantages:
4. The client or committee has the widest range of options to
choose to
5. If, Government, they don’t need to expend anything for
the design, they just need to pick on where they will
award the project (Architectural Design)
 Disadvantages:
1. Expensive and Time Consuming (For the Applicants)
2. Time and Effort required may discouraged qualified firms
from entering
3. Unscrupulous Clients will seek free services under the guise
of the Design Competition where there is a breach under
the Ownership and Copyrights
4. Not really done on Small Projects

METHODS OF COMPENSATION

 Multiple of Direct Personnel Expenses (MDPE)

• Very prevalent in ‘Pre-Design Services’

• Always based in Technical Hours, Expenses, Additional

Cost, and number of Staffs

• Non-Creative Works

• There is always a multiplier (1.5 ~ 2.5) [SPP 2010]

METHODS OF COMPENSATION

 Percentage of Construction Cost (PCC)

• Very Flexible, easy to apply and is related to the ‘Size and

Type’ of Project

• Worldwide used for compensation in Architectural

Services

• Similar to the concept of being charged to realtors, and

developers

• The most common method of compensation which is

‘Fair’ for both parties
METHODS OF COMPENSATION

 Professional Fee + Expenses

• When there is a continuing relationship involving a series

of projects

• There is a fixed sum over and above the reimbursement

for the Architect’s Time and Overhead
METHODS OF COMPENSATION

 Per Diem, Honorarium + Reimbursable Expenses

• If the client request the Architect to do work which will

required his personal time
1. Project related meetings, conferences or trips
2. Ocular inspection of possible project sites
3. Conferring with others regarding investments or
ventures and the like
4. Out of Pocket Expenses

• Architect acts on the behalf of the owner

 Mixed Methods of Compensation
