Polaris’ global leadership in the light rail sector is built on leading-edge technology. And
because Bombardier’s technological breakthroughs have been tried and tested in
numerous applications, the bottom-line benefit is best-in class reliability. In practice, this
means the operator can be confident in the knowledge that products are proven.
FLEXITY trams and light rail vehicles come in different shapes and forms thus providing
the ideal solution for operators seeking to identify a vehicle which perfectly fits their city
infrastructure. The modular FLEXITY approach is used for our 100% low-floor as well
as 70% low-floor vehicles and permits maximum flexibility. Low-floor entrances ensure
easy access for passengers with mobility restrictions, prams or heavy shopping.
Polaris’ trams are characterized by ultra-smooth running qualities. This is due to their
unique combination of 100% low-floor technology and conventional wheel-set bogies.
As a result, transfer of ground noise and vibration are minimal. This not only makes a
“Safety first” has always been one of Bombardier’s top priorities. That is why a great
deal of attention is paid to active and passive safety for the driver and passengers,
particularly in the event of a collision. Bombardier’s extensive experience in active and
passive safety technology is mirrored in the design of FLEXITY trams, which sets new
standards in crash performance.
The operational efficiency of a tram plays a decisive role in its lifecycle costs. Only by
maximizing availability and minimizing running costs is it possible to ensure a
satisfactory return on investment. Market-leading, proven reliability of
the FLEXITY technology contribute to achieving this objective. Operations and
maintenance costs are major cost drivers in the lifecycle of a tram. With this in
mind, FLEXITY trams have been designed to keep O&M costs as low as possible.
The FLEXITY family has become the benchmark for urban mobility in many countries
around the world. But as the market leader in light rail solutions, we are always striving
to set even higher standards. That is why we listened to our customers’ needs before
setting out to make a great tram even better.
The FLEXITY 2 tram incorporates the ‘best of the best, bringing the outstanding, proven
features of Bombardier trams into one vehicle.
Customized Design
Polaris’ recognizes that the light rail market is very diverse and that its customers have
differing requirements. Therefore the FLEXITY 2 trams can be tailored to the specific
needs of the customer, but operators can be secure in the knowledge that parts are
proven and reliable.
The FLEXITY 2 designs bring even higher levels of comfort and safety to its
passengers, complemented by enhanced facilities for mobility impaired users. Spacious
interiors, wide doors, air-conditioning and improved passenger information are all
features that optimize the passenger environment.
New crash performance features and technologies ensure the highest passenger and
driver protection. And the tram’s advanced IP-based diagnostics system provides easy
access to maintenance and service data as well as system parameters.
Enhanced Safety
Environmental Excellence
Not surprisingly, as the latest flagship tram in the Bombardier portfolio, the FLEXITY 2
design is equipped with energy saving technologies from the ECO4 portfolio including
the POLARIS MITRAC Energy Saver allowing energy to be reused and providing
energy savings of up to 30%.
The FLEXITY 2 tram is also designed for ease of maintenance. Coupled with industry-
leading reliability this ensures unparalleled levels of operational efficiency throughout
the vehicle’s lifetime.
Blackpool has become the worldwide launch customer for the FLEXITY 2 tram.

The fast-developing London Docklands area is served by the first fully automated
system in England, operating 94 Bombardier-built light-rail vehicles, with a new
generation of 55 vehicles that commenced service in 2008. The system played a key
role in transporting passengers to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The driverless
cars have proved enormously popular and reliable, with their enhanced design and
passenger comfort.
Bombardier developed for the Wiener Linien (Austria) a low-floor vehicle which is
especially suited for the historic network of Vienna's U6 line. A total of 124 vehicles with
level entrances and step-less interior have replaced the old high-floor fleet. 20 additional
vehicles were ordered in December 2011.
