CHAPTER I
PREMILINARY

A. Backgroud
The object of this research is the idiom found in Sang Pemimpi novel. Idioms
are units of language (words, phrases, or sentences) the meaning cannot be 'deduced' from
the grammatical rules of language (Chaer, 1986: 7).
An idiom is a phrase or an expression that has a figurative, or sometimes
literal, meaning. Categorized as formulaic language, an idiom's figurative meaning is
different from the literal meaning. There are thousands of idioms, occurring frequently in
all languages. 1
I have chosen the idiom in this novel for several reasons (in my own opinion) :
1. Sang Pemimpi's novel is the second book on the tetralogy of the Laskar Pelangi.
2. The author is an accomplished writer in writing novels that is able to penetrate
international market share.
3. The language used by Andrea Hirata is very much in keeping with his native culture.
4. The culture that is embedded in this work.
With that in mind, I ventured to use this novel as a fulfillment of course
assignments Idiom Based Lexical Studies.

B. Problem Formula
Based on the background explanation at the beginning, I formulated the
following problems :
1. Show some examples of idioms in the novel Sang Pemimpi.
2. Translation of Indonesia and English in the novel Sang Pemimpi.
3. A brief description of the meaning of idioms in the novel The Dreamer.
From some of these formulas, I will summarize in one chapter the discussion
of idioms in this novel.

C. Objectives & Benefits

The results of this study as a reference in my learning specifically, and to

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

Intentionally here I did not add sub discussion, because I want to arrange it
briefly. So, below are some idiom sentences that I managed to get in the novel Sang
Pemimpi.

“I regret I changed my comb, and was in the that doorway, I have stage fright”
(Aku menyesal telah mengubah sisiranku, dan di ambang pintu itu, aku demam panggung.)
- Sang Pemimpi, pg. 35.

Demam Panggung / Stage Fright idioms meaning cannot be drawn from the grammatical
rules of language. The grammatical meaning is 'the heat of the body when on the stage', while
the idiom meaning is 'fear or trembling to get on stage'.

“Our fate in the tip of the horn”

(Nasib kami berada di ujung tanduk.)
- Sang Pemimpi, pg. 18.

The grammatical meaning of the tip of the horn is 'the sharp part of the animal's horn', while
the idiom meaning is 'in a dangerous situation'.

“His mother and father were single children and grandfather his grandmother from
both parents is gone too.”
(Ayah ibunya, merupakan anak-anak tunggal, dan kakek neneknya, dari kedua pihak
orangtua juga telah tiada.)
- Sang Pemimpin, pg. 26.

“At four o'clock in the afternoon the rain will spill , not stop until late at night, so in the
small port city of Magai, on Belitong Island, until March next year.”
(Pukul empat sore nanti hujan akan tumpah, tak berhenti sampai jauh malam , demikian di
kota pelabuhan kecil Magai, di Pulau Belitong, sampai Maret tahun depan.)
- Sang Pemimpi, pg 4.

The idioms meaning on example parents and rain will spill including in different idioms
grammatical units. Parents idioms in example meaning is ‘mother and father (biological).’
Including the unit grammatical words. The rain will spill idiom meaning is ‘it will rain’
including grammatical unit of the clause.
CHAPTER III
CLOSING

From the brief description in the chapter that I have explained, I draw the
conclusion that in the novel Sang Pemimpi by Andrea Hirata, idiom is divided into 2 part : (i)
By Grammatical, (ii) By Idiom meaning units.
In the division there is still another division of branches, which I don’t
understand. Therefore I can’t list it yet. I’m so sorry.
Therefore all criticism, opinion, and appreciation are very necessary and I
need to correct all my mistakes. Thank you for your attention.
