Exercise 1.

Following is a list of ages of patients attending a procedure in a referral hospital on a single day.

66, 67, 70, 50, 67, 60, 69, 67, 62, 62, 82, 77, 62, 70, 74

Calculate mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, range, interquartile range.

Tabulate the frequency distribution.

Construct a histogram and box-plot.

Exercise 2

A small town is studying effects of poverty on suicide rates. Data show that 3 percent of population has
attempted suicide and 20 percent of the population lives below poverty line. If these two events are
independent, what is the probability that a person selected at random from the population will have
attempted suicide and be living below the poverty level?

Exercise 3

A research study examined the breast and cervical screening practices of Hispanic and non-Hispanic
women in counties that approximate the U.S. southern border region. The study used data from the
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys of adults age 18 years or older conducted in 1999
and 2000. The table below reports the number of observations of Hispanic and non-Hispanic women
who had received a mammogram in the past 2 years cross-classified with marital status.

Marital Status Hispanic Non-Hispanic

Currently Married 319 738

Divorced or Separated 130 329
Widowed 88 402
Never Married 41 95
Total 578 1564

(a) We select at random a subject who had a mammogram. What is the probability that she is divorced
or separated?

(b) We select at random a subject who had a mammogram and learn that she is Hispanic. With that
information, what is the probability that she is married?

(c) We select at random a subject who had a mammogram. What is the probability that she is non-
Hispanic and divorced or separated?
(d) We select at random a subject who had a mammogram. What is the probability that she is Hispanic
or she is widowed?

(e) We select at random a subject who had a mammogram. What is the probability that she is not
married?

Exercise 4

What is the probability of two persons in this room having a same birthday?

Exercise 5

A clinical study investigated whether low bone mineral density predicts a fracture in older people. The
results of the study are tabled below:
Fracture
Bone mineral density Yes no
High bone mineral density 214 670
Low bone mineral density 73 330

a) Calculate the probability of having high bone mineral density and suffering from a fracture if a
person is picked randomly?
b) Given there is a fracture calculate the probability of having low bone mineral density?
c) A person picked randomly has low bone mineral density. What’s the probability of fracture in
that person?
