5.0 Requirement 4.0: Digital Strategy for E-business

5.1 E-business strategy:
Buying from online was not popular several years ago in Bangladesh but people would get
familiar with it in recent years. From beginning the revolution of e-commerce businesses in
Bangladesh, many companies have come in this sector. Bikroy.com, Chaldal.com,
Bagdoom.com are few of them. For that Daraz BD has to face a huge competition for surviving
in this sector. Even then they have become one of the most successful e-commerce organization
in Bangladesh and their e-business strategy is one of the vital reasons for their success. Few
strategies of them are given below:

 Daraz Mobile Application: At the current moment, majority individuals are using internet
services in their mobile devices. For that daraz bd is providing apps services. This is the
reason why customers can buy their products easily through mobile devices.

Page | 14
Figure: Daraz Apps

helps customers to make faster order process. The authority of Daraz BD always recruits
genuine IT expertise to run the IT department. This is how they keep the standard of their IT
department.

This is how they keep record of their customer and give suggestion to customers that what
types they are looking for.
 CRM Team: It is the important team of them who are doing a vital job to build strong
relationship between them and customers. They provide 24 hours live chat with customer
care representatives where customer can able to take information or complain about the
product. Besides they also interact with their customers to give necessary information such as
when they will get product.

5.2 E-channel strategy:

Daraz BD uses multichannel marketing strategy and expansion strategy to promote themselves.
They always research customer search engine surfing so that they can understand the taste of
their customer. On basis these data, they are doing promotion in Facebook and YouTube.
Besides they are usually giving mobile offers through television commercials. They also provide
different payment options such as debit/credit card, bkash or cash on delivery. It helps customers
to make payment process easier.

5.3 Analyze e-business strategy

5.3.1 Swot Analysis:
Strengths:

Page | 15
1. Genuine Product: Daraz has no record to sell fake products. They sell products which are
coming from authorised seller.

2. Brand Warranty: As we know daraz sells products of authorised sellers and those brands
offer warranty and customers get those warranty if they buy from daraz.

3. Return and replacement policy: Daraz also provides return and replacement policy to their
customer. It also encourages customers to buy products from their websites.

4. Flexible payment: Daraz gives customers several options to give payment which are
debit/credit card, Bkash and cash on delivery.

Weaknesses:

1. High cost of IT management: Daraz invested huge amount of money for building up strong
IT management. It actually reduces their total revenue.

2. Manual and Traditional Purchasing: Majority of people of our country didn’t know what is
online marketing. They usually go to market for buying products. This is the reason why they are
losing huge number of customers.

Opportunities:

1. Emerging online market: As we know online shop is still not popular in our country because
most of the customers would like to do shopping in traditional way. But there is a chance in
future that people will buy their products from online. For that, Daraz should spread the positive
message about online shopping to customers.

2. Take order of products from outside Bangladesh: Daraz generally sells those products
which are available in Bangladesh. They still don’t take any international order like Backpack.
So, we consider that they have opportunity to grab those market.

3. Gift delivery service: They don’t have any gift delivery service yet. So, here is another
opportunity to create the new source for earning revenue.

4. Emergency delivery service: They still don’t offer any this kind of service such as delivery
within 24 hours. But they have opportunity to earn more revenue by providing this service.

Threats:
Page | 16
1. Potential Native Competitors: At present, there are lot e-commerce site in the market. The
number of new emerging competitors are coming into the market which can decrease market
share of daraz in future.
2. Effect of International Giants: According to the daily star, we know that Walmart and
Amazon are planning to establish their business in Bangladesh within next year. If it
happens, there is a huge chance to decrease the sales of Daraz.
3. Political instability: In Bangladesh, no businesses can run properly due to bad political
environment. This can be same for online business too. As we know, election will be held on
this December. On that time, political situation might be bad and it effects the sales of Daraz.

5.4 Competitive Threats:

We have already discussed about threats in the section of swat analysis. Then we have identified
some competitive threats which we describe below:

1. Foreign Company: Some popular enormous e-commerce organizations like Amazon,

Walmart are planning to enter into the Bangladeshi market[ CITATION The18 \l 2057 ]. Walmart has
already established their office in Dhaka. According to brand equity scores, Amazon and
Walmart are far popular than Daraz. When these giants start businesses, there is a big chance that
Daraz will lose their market share. Because people know better about Walmart, Amazon rather
than Daraz. Though popular e-commerce organization “Alibaba express” bought Daraz recently
but Daraz didn’t change their name. This is why most of the people did not know this
information.

2. Increase of online business at Facebook: Facebook is one of the most popular social media
in our country. There are lot of people in our country who are using Facebook in every day. For
that, some young entrepreneurs who started their business in Facebook. In 2015, the Facebook
authority included “shop” feature in their website[ CITATION Ket15 \l 2057 ]. This is the reason
why most of the people used this feature to open an online Facebook shop where they are selling
their products. And the important thing is that the price of their products is cheaper than products
of daraz. The reason is that they don’t need any big office and warehouse like daraz. For that
their operation cost is less than Daraz. This is why we have considered it one of their competitive
advantage because it can reduce the total revenue of daraz.

Page | 17
Now we will provide some suggestions below so that Daraz can respond those competitive
threats.

 Daraz has to maintain the quality of the product for building strong relationship with
customers
 Daraz has to bring new product line so that they can compete with amazon and Walmart
when they start their business.

6.0 E-Business Security

In the world of physical objects, there are thieves and robbers trying to rob us of the physical
possessions we own. But when it comes to the world of digital contents and software, hackers are
trying to steal contents or invade into our private world of digital possessions. The hackers or
intruders constantly trying to invade government websites and renowned business sites. In the
world of E-business the attackers are always looking for a way to break through computer
security defenses in the hope of finding any information that could give their employers the
ability to hurt or jeopardize competitors and enemies. One of the most key elements of
electronic commerce is cyber security. To keep a business and its customers safe while
conducting electronic commerce, it has to build up its internet security and make it strong
enough to keep away possible invaders from stealing valuable information.
3 levels of security can be detected in the world of cyber security where breaching should be
stopped at all costs like-

Security for
client computers

Communication
channel security

Security for
server computers

Page | 18
Hacking has been a part of computing for over 4 decades now and this process of striving to get
unauthorized entry to computer resources is still going on strong. There are various types of
hacking like-
a. Website hacking
b. Network hacking
c. Ethical hacking
d. Password hacking
e. Computer hacking etc.

6.1 Five IT security risk:

There are many security risks in the world of electronic business but we want to mention top five

There are many security risks in the world of electronic business but we want to mention top five
that will impact e-business in a ruthless manner. They are-
Buffer overflow: When a buffer overflow takes place in a program, it will often crash or become
unstable which means a big red sign for e-business as it can crash their websites.
SQL injections: The injection of malicious SQL parameters pass to the database in the server
could damage the whole database or steal data so we can conclude that it can merely destroy an
e-business.
Phishing: The business if attacked by phishing will lose its sensitive information such as
username, passwords and customer will be giving away credit card details as phishing is often
done for malicious reasons by disguising as a trust worthy entity in an electronic communication.
Pharming: It is a cyber-attack which redirects a website's traffic to another, probably to a sham
or fraud site so potential customer will be misdirected to fraudulent sites.
Botnets: a network of private computers infected with malicious software and controlled as a
group without the owners' knowledge, for example- to send spam.

6.2 Two IT security risks cause severe damage:

Phishing: Phishing attacks pose a continuing threat to the e-commerce and are becoming more
and more complex. The potential business effects of spear phishing are quite serious in e -
commerce. Breaches of customer data are costly and embarrassing. Customer information is
often used by hackers to fraudulently order products from the very e - commerce company from

Page | 19
which they store information! These look like legitimate orders from repeated customers with a
new or donation address, but the actual goods are "shipped " abroad. It causes massive losses of
potential revenue and damages to e-commerce brand due[ CITATION Vad18 \l 2057 ].
SQL Injections: SQL injection can affect any website or web application using a SQL database,
including ecommerce platforms. In this type of attack, a hacker can enter malicious SQL
statements in a payload that is included in a legitimate SQL survey. If the attacker has access to
the database, they can create an administrative account, delete database entries or view sensitive
information for themselves[ CITATION sec18 \l 2057 ]. According to an Akamai report, 51% of
cyber-attacks on web applications in 2017[ CITATION Out18 \l 2057 ].For that we have considered
that it is the great threat for Ecommerce site and cause massive loss for them.

6.3 Suggestion security management for two identified risks

For Phishing:
We can take the steps mentioned below to avoid phishing:
• Keep all systems current with the latest security patches and updates.
• Put a web filter to ban out malicious websites.
• Train the employees and take training sessions with mock phishing scenarios.
• Encrypt all confidential company information[ CITATION DIG18 \l 2057 ].
For SQL Injections:
We can take the different paths to avoid SQL injections, a few of them are given below:
• Use of Prepared Statements: Prepared statements ensure that an attacker cannot change
the intent of a query even if an attacker inserts SQL commands.
• Use of Stored Procedures: Certain standard stored procedure programming concepts have the
same effect as the use of parameterized queries when implemented securely which is the norm
for most stored procedure languages.
• White List Input Validation: Different parts of SQL queries are not legal locations for the use
of binding variables such as tables or column names and the order indicator (ASC or DESC). In
such situations, the most appropriate defense is white input validation or query redesign.
