GENDER BASED VIOLENCE STATISTICS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2020


During the first quarter of 2020, police recorded 5,040 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) Countrywide compared to
5,584 recorded in the First Quarter of 2019. This shows a decrease by 544 cases translating to a 10.8% reduction.
Lusaka Province recorded the highest GBV cases at 1,760 cases translating to 35%, followed by Copperbelt with 873 GBV
cases translating to 17.3%. Northern Province recorded the lowest GBV cases at 109 cases translating to 2.2%.
Statistics from the rest of the Provinces are as follows; Central Province 567 cases translating to 11.3%, Western Province
426 cases translating to 8.5%, Eastern Province 406 cases translating to 8.0%, Muchinga Province 275 cases translating to
5.4%, Southern Province 192 cases translating to 3.8%, Luapula Province 185 cases translating to 3.6%, North western
Province 169 cases translating to 3.3%, Northern Province 109 cases translating to 2.2%, Tazara 38 cases translating to 0.8%
and Airport 40 Cases translating to 0.8%.
On forms of Gender Based Violence recorded during the period under reveiw, a total of 2,167 cases relating to Physical
violence were reported countrywide translating to 42.9%, 1,858 cases of Economic violence translating to 36.8%, 834 cases
of Sexual violence translating to 16.5% and 171 cases of Emotional violence were recorded translating to 3.3% of all the
GBV cases reported during the period under review.
In 2019 a total of 2,127 cases of Physical violence were recorded translating to 38% while 930 cases of Economic violence
were reported translating to 16.7%. Sexual violence accounted for 630 cases translating to 11.3% while Emotional violence
accounted for a total of 202 cases translating to 3.6%.
During the period under review, Police recorded a total number of 633 cases of child defilement representing 12.5 % of the
reported cases, out of which 630 were girls while three are boys compared to the 2019 First Quarter statistics in which 495
cases were recorded translating to 8.9%. However, during 2019, all victims were girls.
In the first quarter of 2020, Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of child defilement cases with 313 cases
translating to 49.4% of child defilement cases reported country wide followed by Eastern Province with 70 cases translating
to 11%, Central Province with 68 cases translating to 10.7% , Southern Province recorded 49 cases translating 7.7% while
Northern province recorded 18 translating to 2.8%.
Others are Copperbelt with 38 cases translating to 06%, Muchinga, 30 cases translating to 4.7%, Western, 21 cases
translating to 3.3%, North Western, 15 cases translating to 2.3%, Luapula, 10 cases translating to 1.5% while Tazara
Division recorded 1 case of child defilement translating to 0.2%.

A comparison of the 2020 First Quarter on defilement to the 2019 First Quarter child defilement statistics which was at
495 cases shows an increase of 138 cases translating to 21.8% increase.
The Country also recorded 34 cases of indecent assaults during the First Quarter of 2020 out of which 19 were women, 4
boys and 11 girls compared to the First Quarter of 2019 in which the Victim Support Unit recorded 39 cases of indecent
assault in which 26 victims were female adults, two male juveniles and 11 female juveniles.
In the First Quarter of 2020 , the Victim Support Unit recorded 119 cases of rape, 16 cases of attempted rape, 12 cases of
incest and 11 cases of Unnatural offences.
In comparison with the 2019 GBV First Quarter Statistics, the Country recorded 65 cases of rape, 11 cases of attempted
rape, 11 cases of incest, nine cases of Unnatural offences.
The First Quarter 2020 gender victim disaggregated data, indicates that 841 men reported GBV cases representing 16.7%,
2,768 female adults representing 54.9%, 294 male juveniles representing 5.8% and 1,124 female juveniles representing
22.3% were reported as victims of Gender Based Violence countrywide.
In the First Quarter of 2019, there were 1,419 men , representing 25.4%, 3,011 female adults representing 53.9%, 295 male
juveniles representing 5.3% and 859 female juveniles representing 15.4% victims of Gender Based Violence.
During the First Quarter of 2020, 10 murder cases were recorded out of which seven victims were female adults and three
were female juveniles compared to the 2019 First Quarter GBV Crime Statistics in which 15 murder cases were recorded
showing a reduction by five cases representing 33.3% reduction of the total number of murder cases recorded.
During the First Quarter of 2019, eight murder victims were female adult, three were male adults, four male juveniles .

representing 37.4% of the total reported cases of GBV out of which 1,589 victims were female adults while 297 were male
adults.
Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of Assault OABH cases with 477 translating to 25.3% followed by Central
Province which recorded 325 cases translating to 17.2% while Copperbelt had 239 translating to 12.7% of Assault OAHB.
In comparison with the 2019 GBV First Quarter Crime Statistics 1,880 assault O.A.B.H cases were recorded countrywide
translating to 33.7% of the reported cases.
The Zambia Police has observed, from the daily incidence reports received from across the country, a reduction in the
number of GBV cases being reported to Police during the period of COVID 19.
