INTERNATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY HISTORY:

Describe Per Henrik Ling and his contributions in the development of the Physical therapy
Profession (2pts)
Per Henrik Ling is known as the ‘father of Swedish Gymnastics”. He became the forerunner of Physical
Therapy when it was a professional group back then. Per Henrik Ling founded the royal Central Institute
of Gymnastics in the 1813 for massage, manipulation and exercise. 

Summarize the events from 1916 to 1937 that helped shaped the role of Physical therapy to societies
health care (4pts)

During the year 1916, the world was devastated by the polio epidemic. During this time young women
treated polio patients by using passive movements. Because of the need, PTs developed the manual
muscle testing for assessing strength and implement muscle strengthening and re-education for weaker
muscles. Polio in the US became widespread that even the future president Franklin D. Roosevelt was
diagnosed by it. After sessions of therapy, in the year 1926 a resort was purchased in Warm Springs
Georgia and was used as a Hydrotherapy Center for polio patients, today it is known as the Roosevelt
Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. During the First World War, PTs were in demand due to
soldiers having the need of rehabilitation. During the 1920’s, Physical therapy began to grow within the
medical and surgical community. Polio was still present in the 1930’s and in the year 1937 the National
Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was established and support the growth of Physical Therapy as a
profession.

Summarize the events from 1950s to 1970s that helped shaped the development of the Physical
therapy profession (4pts)
In 1950s gaining independence, autonomy and professionalism was the need of the hour for the
profession
Having independence, autonomy and professionalism was the priority for the PT profession as it
progressed from technicians to professional practitioners. In 1954, American Physical Therapy
Association (APTA) developed a competency exam with the Professional Examination Service and was
made available in state licensing boards, in 1955 Self-employment section was formed as a part of APTA
as private practice grew.
In 1955 PT’s role in Cardiac Rehabilitation expanded as studies were made that has shown that prolonged
bedrest decrease functional capabilities. During the Korean War, PT demand rose again and in 1967-1976
PT profession expanded into the field of orthopedics and cardiopulmonary disorders, PT was practiced in
pre and post-operative units.

Briefly describe the history of contributions of the Physical therapy profession to Cardiac
Rehabilitation (2pts)
During the expansion of Physical Therapy in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Field, it is told that prolonged
bedrest during myocardial infarction would lead to complications and decreased functionality. Researches
on the need of physical activity on cardiac patients was continued to be studied.

PHILIPPINE PHYSICAL THERAPY HISTORY:

Describe the contributions of the Philippine Physical therapy Association (PPTA) in the
development of the profession in the Philippines (3pts)

The Philippine Physical Therapy Association (PPTA) was founded to provide educational growth and
promote its professional advancement for physical therapists in our country. The PPTA helped in the
creation of Republic Act 5680, also known as the 'Philippine Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy
Law’ and in June 21,1969 this landmark legislation was passed by both the Senate and the House of
Representative. As part of this law, a Board of Examiners of Physical Therapists and Occupational
Therapists was created.

Describe the role of Ms. Mary McMillan in the development of the Physical therapy profession in
the Philippines (3pts)
Ms. Mary McMillan’s role in the development of Physical Therapy became vital since it the treatment she
performed in the Philippines maybe of its first for Physical Therapy. She continued to practice Physical
Therapy during her stay here in the Philippines and thus the field of Physical Therapy grew in the
Philippines.

Briefly summarize the first hospitals to provide Physical therapy services in the Philippines as well
as the development of the first training programs offered to develop the profession.(3pts)

Physical Therapy being practiced in hospitals in the Philippines was started and established at San Juan
de Dios Hospital. Military Hospitals, like Veteran's Memorial Hospital and the V. Luna General Hospital.
However it is at Mandaluyong General Hospital where the field continued to progress. Rehabilitation
became an important aspect in medical care in the Philippines as training programs were given by by U.S.
Army physicians, American Red Cross nurses, and foreign consultants in Physical and Occupational
Therapy.

 
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 5680

Enumerate the different “Board Examiners” of The Physical and Occupational therapy profession.
Describe how they are appointed and how long is their term of office. (3pts)
The board of Examiners is composed of a chairman and four board members. The chairman shall be a
Physiatrist and two members shall be Occupational Therapist and the other two shall be Physical
Therapist. Each member shall be appointed by their corresponding national professional organization and
submitted to the President of the Philippines through the Commissioner of Civil Service. A term of three
years in office will be effective until their successors will be appointed. Provided that the first Board and
two members consisting of a Physical Therapist and an Occupational Therapist shall hold office for two
years and the other two for three years.

Briefly describe / summarize the message being delivered in Section 12 and Section 27 (3pts)

These 2 Sections talks about the prohibition of practice of Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy
without the valid certificate to do so. A person shall be deemed to be practicing if methods being used in
Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy is used on a repeated basis. A person caught shall be
punishable of paying fine and imprisonment.

Refer to Section 16-19. Thoroughly describe the Physical therapy Licensure Examination including
the required rating to obtain to accomplish the exam (3pts)

The scope of examination here in the Philippines shall be consist of written and practical examinations. It
is the Board’s duty to prepare the Examination for both written and practical examinations. An examinee
must have a general rating of at least seventy-five percent in the written exam to pass. If one fail to do so,
the examinee may be permitted to take a second examination the year after their first examination if they
obtained seventy-five per cent in each of at least five of the subjects. The examinee must obtain a rating
of at least seventy-five percent in the repeated subjects. Results will be given to the Commissioner of
Civil Service, who shall, with his recommendation, submit such ratings to the President of his approval in
the span of one hundred twenty days. Certificates of registration will be issued to the applicants who
passed the examination. The certificate will be the evidence that the person is entitled to all rights and
privileges of a registered physical therapist.
